  • let the genocide of the Irish people be remembered

  • I love this song but such a shame the hatred it always seems to cause! I am half English and half Irish and although born in England have a lot of family still in Ireland. Although is getting less common I can't stand the Irish hatred of all English people, particularly young people who have nothing to do with past actions of government and armies! Thank god I am an atheist!!

  • nice rendition of song.

  • I hope gaelic isnt being lost on the youth of Ireland. I visited Ireland back when i was 12 with family, there was some Gaelic around, mostly was just English though.

I only say i hope its not dying cause thats your language, and once you lose. What are you? Its like your identity.

IMO i say start teaching the young the language. Dont let it die.

  • Tiocfaidh ár lá!!!

  • the IRA was good in the 20s when they fought with honor. but then around the 60s they adapted terrorist methods and most of their leaders (gerry adams etc) became leftist extremists willing to support scum like the PLO and Gaddafi. the "provisionals" disgraced their cause, by using brutal terrorism against civilians, and becoming socialist idiots.

  • @TheTollundWoman

Gerry Adams didnt enter IRA leadership until the late 70's onwards, secondly of all the IRA did not support Gaddifi, Gerry Adams was running down the army purposly so the political wing SF would have an advantage as the IRAs actions were undermining SF's political agenda. As i was saying the army was being run down, hardcore republicans who believed Gerry was destroying the leadership seeked to rebuild the IRA to what it was, they didnt support Gadaffi but they needed the arms

  • @TheTollundWoman to continue and escalate the war, they prepared for a 'Tet' offensive similar to what was used in Veitnam, they planned to strike England at its homeland but they were looking at the causulties and decided to call it off, the IRA never intended to kill innocent people, on the other hand loyalist paramilitiaries were quite willing to do so, but this isnt about that, Gaddafi seen the struggle within ireland for freedom and like he famously said 'it isnt Englands country'

  • @drewrodgers2009

So the IRA actually modelled their strategy of the Communists in Vietnam? Wow. Thats telling....and Gaddafi supporting a "struggle for freedom" is about as logical as Hitler supporting religious tolerance. The Loyalist terrorists were scum too no doubt about it. but accepting funds from Gaddafi is f***ed up.

  • @drewrodgers2009

And now of course Sinn Fein is so outraged about NATO helping the Libyan rebels, saying its "imperialism." Is anyone fooled by that? Its obvious Gerry Adams % Co. are just annoyed their old buddy and sponsor Gaddafi is being unmasked as the murderer he was all along. The IRA after 69 were terrorists. not too mention deranged Leftists...

  • @TheTollundWoman Doesn't matter about the IRA and Libyan history, the fact is NATo's campaign against Libya has turned from stopping attacks on civilians by the Libyan military and turned into regime change in Libya to install a pro NATO government. That is imperialism, plain and simple, and if you turn off Fox news long enough you should be able to see it.

  • @degen83

Right, so I suppose when the Brits supported De Gaulle and the French resistance, that was "imperialism" too? when Frank Ryan led Irish soldiers to intervene in Spain against Franco, that was Irish "imperialism"? coming to the aid of freedom fighters isn't imperialism. and NATO didn't intervene on its own, it responded to repeated requests for aid from the rebels.

  • @degen83

I never listen to Fox, except for laughs (Glenn beck is so dumb its funny...) as far as news goes: I watch BBC, Al Jazeera, and occasionally MSNBC, I read the Chosun Ilbo and the Epoch Times online. and sometimes yahoo news b/c it shows up on my homepage. and the so-called "regime change" is a very weird euphemism for a revolution that began entirely internally, by that standard the Provisional Government of the Irish Republic est. 1916 was also an example of "regime change"?

  • @degen83

since NATO are the only ones helping the Rebels, of course they are "pro-NATO", just like the Spanish Republic in teh civil war was assumed to be "pro-communsit" b/c it received help from the International Brigades, in reality it was a capitalist democracy, not a communist state, but they took help from whoever offered it

  • @degen83

and yes, the IRA's history of collaboration with Gaddafi does matter a great deal. it makes their whole claim to be "freedom-fighters" proposterous. you want freedom for Ireland, but you want Libya to accept a dictatorship? sorry, not happening.

  • @TheTollundWoman if you care about Libyan freedom so much, why not the rest of the Arabs? Do you denounce Saudi Arabia murdering their protestors, something that the western media doesn't show because they want the west to like Saudi Arabia? How about Bahrain's protestors who were murdered by the Saudi Arabian army? Do you support NATO going into Saudi Arabia and Bahrain to get freedom for their people from their own dictators/monarchy?

  • @degen83

Yes, I denounce the Saudi regime which is completely illegitimate, I support the freedom fighters in Bahrain, i support the Jasmine revolution everywhere, and I think NATO should intervene wherever protests are met with violence. unfortunately I have no actual influence in NATO, so its not like they're going to listen to me...

  • @TheTollundWoman good to see you want to support freedom fighters everywhere, but heres the kicker: there are freedom fighters within NATO countries that are opressed and taken out, such as in Spain, Italy, and UK. NATO itself is corrupt by its refusal to acknowledge this as anything more than internal strife by its own members. Until NATO owns up to its own support of tyranny NATO cannot be the moral police of the world or the freedom fighters, since it is supporting tyranny by doing it.

  • @degen83

Spain, Italy and the UK all have democratically elected governments, with constitutions and/or legal systems gauranteeing basic civil and human rights to their citizens, and all allow protest and dissent. Gaddafi's regime is a military dictatorship, he came to power through a coup d'etat, there are no free elections, and no legal gaurantees of basic rights. that comparison is absurd.

  • @TheTollundWoman UK, Spain, and Italy all say that, but there are protests that go in all of those areas that the police and military break up violently. i remember the 1972 shooting of unarmed marchers in Derry, shot by para's from the UK. Police in spain brutally supress Basque protests, and the same happens in Italy regarding Sicilians, they do not tolerate talks of seccesion there or in any of the places I mentioned. Just because they are democracies doesn't mean they listen to everyone.

  • @TheTollundWoman the fact of the matter is that NATO supports SOME rebels, only if it benefits them. there are plenty of other rebel movements that run directly contrary to NATO's goals that they don't support, and they even fund efforts AGAINST these freedom fighters. NATO supports Saudi Arabia murdering their own protestors and Bahrain's, but condemns Syria, Libya, and Iran for the same thing. Until NATO handles Saudi Arabia the same way as it does Iran/Libya/Syria it is hypocricy and false

  • @degen83

well you're right about that, NATO should intervene against Saudi Arabia as well. of course if it were up to me, instead of assassinating Bin Laden, Seal Team VI would've gone after Kim Jong Il first.

  • @degen83

Besides, Fox news and most of the Republicans in america are mad at Obama for helping the rebels, they believe the pro-Gaddafi lies about the rebels being "islamists"

  • @TheTollundWoman It doesn't matter what the rebels are, let them fight their own war for independence and lets stop involveing ourselves in Libyan affairs. Stop the militayr from shooting unarmed civilians, sure, but lets get out of their internal civil war instead of take sides to kick out a government we have long been at odds with.

Lets solve our problems at home before trying to solve/involve ourselves in world problems.

Leave Afghanistan, Iraq, and Libya, alone.

  • @degen83

the rebels are poorly equipped and nowhere near as organized as Gaddafi's forces, Gaddafi in contrast is armed to the teeth thanks to the support he has from his fellow dictators (the rebels captured some of his armies' weapons and found the inscription: "gift of the DPRK"). the rebels need our support, just like De Gaulle needed the Brits' support 60 years ago, and just like freedom fighters everywhere need and deserve the support of the free world

  • @TheTollundWoman the problem i have with helping the rebels in Libya is we are not also helping the "rebels" in South Ossettia, an area Georgia has never controlled not even in the Soviet Union. We are not supporting the Basques in Spain, we are not supporting the IRA in Northern Ireland, we are not supporting the Drug cartels in their fight against the Columbian government. We pick and chose which rebels to help depending on if they want to our allies or not, not depending on their need.

  • @degen83

the IRA and ETA are attacking democratically elected governments that gaurantee basic civil liberties to their citizens. the Libyan rebels are fighting against an unelected dictatorship, essentially a military junta, led by Colonel Gaddafi. NO COMPARISON

  • @TheTollundWoman Why is a dictatorship necessarily bad? What is so great about Democracy, when most of the population is too dumb or "busy" to understand all the issues they are voting on? It is for this reason that there is no such thing as Democracy, the USA and others "democratic" states are Republics, what your vote does is vote in someone else who does know whats going on and votes for you and everyone else in their jurisdiction.

  • @TheTollundWoman So instead of allowing the government of Libya to stay in power and just interven to stop the military from attacking civilians, you instead support utter regime change because you believe they want democracy and you don't like dictatorships. Afghanistan doesn't want democracy, they want stability and unity. How do you know supporting a democratic government won't end up with another Mubbarak of Egypt? "Democratically" elected for 30 years?

  • @degen83

what that really means in reality is: abandon Afghanistan to the Taliban's oppression, abandon Iraq to Saddam Hussein's dictatorship, abandon Libya to Gaddafi's mass murdering regime. You might as well add: Abandon Poland to the Nazis. the Left has morphed into a modern-day chorus of Neville Chamberlains

  • @TheTollundWoman abandon Afghanistan to the Taliban because the US and NATO cannot win, and I'd rather pull the troops out and use those billions on projects here at home.

abandon Iraq: too late, the US fucked that place up so bad that the new gov is even worse than Saddam, at least pull the US troops out and let the regional powers fix that country.

stop the shooting of innocent protestors in Libya but you do not have to sponsor an overthrow of the government to do that.

  • @degen83

how is the new govt/ worse than Saddam?? does the new government kill civilians with poison gas as Saddam did? Is the new ruling party in Baghdad modelled directly off the Nazis, as the Ba'ath party was? Is the new President of Iraq an unelected dictator as Saddam was? Is the new Iraqi government committing genocide against the Kurds as Saddam did?

  • @TheTollundWoman the secret police go around and indiscriminately kidnap civilians and put them in death camps. to maintain power they have to do the same tactics Saddam did; lead by fear. make the people so afraid of you they won't dare attack you.

  • @degen83

    @degen83

so should the International Brigades, including Frank Ryan's regiment, have "stopped involving itself" in the "internal civil war" in Spain in the 1930s? of course decent people everywhere had "long been at odds with" fascism. but according to your logic stopping fascists was "imperialism" too!

  • @TheTollundWoman listen clearly, what I am saying is either support ALL freedom fighters, or none of them. Do not pick and chose which ones to support depending on which one will help you out the most, because if you do that you clearly are not a freedom fighter but are merely using them, like the US used the Mujahadeen when they were useful, and are now fighting them now that they aren't.

  • @degen83

well I support the freedom fighters in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia as well! I support resistance against any and all dictatorships. and NATO is right in helping the rebels in Libya, NATO should also help the dissidents in China, and across the Arab world, and wherever else freedom is threatened by tyranny.

  • @TheTollundWoman good. I hope you know that NATO does support tyranny, and even NATO countries must come to terms and stop supporting their own tryanny. NATO must take action against Spain in defense of the Basques, in defense of the Sicilians in Italy, and in defense of the Irish in the United Kingdom. They also must stop Saarkhvili's tryanical regime in Georgia and support South ossettia and Abkhazia, and others before I take NATO seriously with the "freedom fighters" argument from them.

  • @drewrodgers2009

The IRA call themselves "Republicans", implying they support a Republic in which leaders are elected democratically. But their main sponsor was a DICTATOR named Gaddafi...and plus. half the 'Republican' videos on YT have pictures of Che Guevara against a background of the Irish flag claiming he was of Irish descent. Che, who helped create Castro's DICTATORSHIP in Cuba. WTF? You can't support dictators and claim to be "republican"...just doesn't work.

  • for years the IRA accepted funds and support from Col. Gaddafi's dictatorship. SHAME

  • ireland unfree shall never be at peace up the ra

  • @OurCountryOurCulture man your thick. i doubt that many are proud of that rag flying over the land and btw it flew oer the rest of Ireland before and guess what! it doesn't now! and your calling me the idiot? your a grown women arguing with a 17 year old! your not going to win. your facts may be solid but your logic is off. you'll never beat us and we will be whole once more!

  • @OurCountryOurCulture this is why you cant win an argument with a fool. they never understand what your saying and its plain english. you can think what you like but in the end Ireland will be a nation once again... a complete one

  • @OurCountryOurCulture you have no clue do you? we gave the whole constitutional claim because the only way you morons ever get the whole we want out thing is threw force. we showed that in the revolution and btw what happed there? anyways your just like people in the Australian gov. when they "disarmed" the civilians and now they found they got less then half of them. its very easy to hide guns. and who cares what money you take. money is money no matter what disgusting face is on it.

  • According to these Fenian fucks everything was the fault of the big bad Brits, Their was plenty of food in Ireland during the ''an Gorta Mór'' but that doesn't suit the republican propaganda going into overtime.

  • @OurCountryOurCulture are you a frinkin idiot? there is plastic in an armalight. not that you have ever seen or touched a gun of ANY sort being a limey ( and really you care bout that spelling its u tube who cares). and another thing we have not been beaten and never will be. we have been down so many times yet you can never beat us in the end.

  • @OurCountryOurCulture first i have been in Ireland. St. Paddy's day in Dublin is real nice. second the only plastic you should be worried bout is on Armerlights. third my "dumb ramblings" are just common sense. something you limies lack. and how old are you, like 6? your answers are getting less and less productive and just bordering on simple name calling. i bring in facts and logic ad you bring plastic paddy... man your losing yet another battle to the Irish/Americans. thats sad

  • @OurCountryOurCulture yeah i have! and bout the whole songs being played. you can round up tons of loyalist pigs in a heartbeat, or PAY A BAND TO DO IT! man ur dumb limie

  • @OurCountryOurCulture and your still a limie ad your people are still a disgrace

  • @OurCountryOurCulture yeah thats why the queen was almost killed yesterday limie

  • @OurCountryOurCulture you keep on thinking that its forever british. you skummy limies are simply trying to hold on to the crumbling empire you once had. Tiocfaidh ár lá.

  • @OurCountryOurCulture we did win that war, and also the one in the Pacific! we rebuilt ya ad bailed ya outa the last war. the welsh and the scotts repelled the Romans and the Saxons, and your military if mostly made up of Scotts! yo limies cant do anything on your own! unless its imposing unfair and cruel taxes and killing women and children can you?! Bloody Sunday, and all your other atrocities show your true colors! LEAVE IRELAND FOR THE IRISH!

  • @OurCountryOurCulture up yours limie! you wonder why we hate you to this day. cant even admit your own mistakes. you and your bloody generals were premodonas and thats why you needed us to save ya during

WWII! you needed a real man like PATTON! not that idiot motgumry. bloody limies cant even fight your own wars unless your killing innocent civilians!

  • Up the IRA!

  • Comment removed

  • Every day is indeed a school day. It really is amazing the amount of information you can pick up. I hate to sound like a know it all...but the original IRA actually fought in the Irish War of Independence and following Civil War. In the former, all of the IRA targets were primarily British soldiers and or aggressive sympathizers. Most people confuse the Original IRA with the Provisional IRA, and funny enough, most of the attacks against civilians were carried out by the UDF, UFF, UVF etc.

  • Another good song taken and ruined by sectarian pricks!

And the other side are fannies........ or is it the other way round?

I have to "dislike" this because of the shouts about the ira. The famine affected both religions not just Catholics.

  • @spartacus7364-- This song was written in the 1970s in order to emphasize the terrible persecution that Irish Catholics faced under British Rule. The lyrics basically connect the IRA's struggles during the Troubles to the struggles faced by Irish Catholics during the Famine, which Charles Trevelyan considered a "god send," and a "natural ethnic cleansing."

  • @TheProvos1888 I didn't know that. Every day is a school day!

Being a Scot who wishes for independance from "them" I can sympathise with the cause of the ira's campaign however, I can't agree with their methods and I believe that the peace talks proved that both sides could, and should have earlier, come to a peaceful agreement.

  • @spartacus7364 - I respect your point about terrorism but must take issue with your other statements. First, Ireland had plenty of food besides the potato (such that calling this a famine lets the government off the hook). The Penal Laws are another matter you seem to be ignoring with your assertion that things during this time were the same regardless of religion.

  • we have northern ireland on the union flag to thank the irish who fought along side us in conflicts like ww1

  • I see that the Gary Og web site would like free denotions. Way to go Gary in the best draditions of the socialist Scots!

  • Many thanks to Wattsite for their considered intelligent opinion (lol). With regard to current monetry arrangements check out the Barnett formulea, I think you will find you Scots are screwing the English. In terms of my appearance my wife thinks I am still rather attractive (she does have bad eyes). Finally I lived and worked in Scotland 2001-2002 and I left because, I met so many people with a serious chip on the shoulder about the English. Bye the way the Scottish Highlands are magnificent

  • To Raaamz

Last time I checked Eire was a independant country and Northern Ireland had voted to be part of the UK. The English would love to leave Scotland do you know how much we support you socialist parasites. Also do you know that the Union of 1703 was at the request of Scotland? Liberate Gibralter, this was given to the crown in perpetuity as part of the treaty of Utrect. Falklands check your history on the discovery & claim to rights of tese islands.

  • the past is the past, im from england but love the irish music, i think the film braveheart started the scots off, im not scum , good friends with alot of lads from ireland alot to do with the boxing, if you wanna fight get in the ring or join the army ....get paid for it, dont try an be patriotic when you aint never read a history book about your country, this song is about the terrible times of the past and should never happen again, i speak the truth , the crown is justice not bombs

  • To an English person the raw religious tribalism in this video is just crazy, we left these ideas a few hundred years ago. I worked in Scotland for a few years (2006-2008) the attitudes to the English were just pathetic. The Scottish people used to be a great inventive people and now they are a pathetic buntch of retrospective people. Grow up you Scotish people!!

  • @davmccorm Give Ireland back, leave Scotland, vacate Wales, liberate Gibraltar, free Malta and let the Falklands alone - then and only then can you have an opinion on Scots. Grow up English scum!!

  • @davmccorm Fuck you,you sassunach loving bastard,if you knew union and

scottish politics you would understand our resentment you ugly foreign bastard don't come back you cunt ,once you learn about the current constituational arrangements you "might" attempt to understand. We would want you in our natve land you are ani scottish scum how should have been shot at birth.

Fuck You Sassunach bastard FUCK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wasn't this clip recorded live in Hamburg ?

    Sure it was.

  • This is not a rebel song. It was only written in the 70's. The IRA (Real or otherwise) should be fucked and burned. This is a beatiful song and should not be associated with terrorism. Sadly it is. If you don't like living in Britain then fuck off to where you do want to live. Low lie the free fields of the UK...................

  • @superted147

Right; it should not be associated with the Terrorism the Brits have inflicted on Ireland for centuries; nor there war mongering or imperialism.

Thank God We in USA have never been guilty of that; I imagine this song is a favorite of soldiers in our bases all over the world. Understand it was a favorite of George W. Bush--but he that the "Fields of Athenry" was where they grew his favorite brand of pot.

  • He makes the song his own. Enjoyed it very much!

  • Happy paddys day !

  • fantastic - you can feel the passion

  • Og(pronounced OQUE as in POQUE) It's Gaelic for Young, in this case, Gary's father was probably Gary so he would be called Gary Og(Young Gary or Gary Junior) Hope this answers your question,.

  • It does need to be looked at. An ex of mine suffered and probably still suffers from awful flash backs (as does her sister). The really sad thing about this is that it just scratches the surface. The time is right for an international enquiy into abuse and it should include the developing world where the young have no-one to protect them from any army of priests nuns etc. Take care fight the good fight. XX

  • Excellent version of a beautiful Irish ballad.

  • Can someone tell me what the crowd was chanting in between the singer's lyrics?

  • Outside the church gates I saw a child crying "Father Murphy has touched me once again" He said I wouldn't go to heaven Or even live to see Eleven Now I must let him touch me, everyday. Shame round the halls down fenian way Where pervert priests on young choirboys pray Father Murphy show's his ring All the priests begin to sing Of the shame around the halls in fenian way,
  • I am sure there are some unspeakable things that have happened in the past, and these are due to shameful behaviour by people in responsible positions who have abused this position of trust. This must have been a dreadful experience for an innocent child or children, and can never be condoned. I hope that all these perverts and criminals have been punished, and the Church is now a safe place for anyone, not only an innocent and vulnerable child.

  • not as gd as paddy

  • He's rangers, of course it's crap for him :D

  • What do you mean crap ?

It's a lovely song. There are several versions and singers, Paddy Reilley sings a fantastic rendition, that would bring you to tears.

    Norfolk

  • The song is very emotive and beautiful, but personally I like to hear it sung by The Wolfetones or Paddy Reilly as it sounds much more sacred and in keeping with what it is representing.

The Famine was a very sad, dark time in Ireland's history and this song points this out in this wonderfully worded song. Please listen to it sung the way it should be sung, then I think you will change your own words.

  • Hail Mary let the freebirds fly!

  • im english and i say go on gary og and the irish i fuckin love yer

  • I also find it ironic that the hero of all these hun fucks is King William of Orange. It is well know that the huns have an intolerance to Catholics and associated that with King Billy as well. However, King Billy actually encouraged the Act of Toleration and he wanted this act to extend to Roman Catholics but was defeated in parliament, so the bill got passed but only included toleration for certain Protestant nonconformists. He was also a poofter so that is why you lot relate to him hahaha.

  • Isn't it also ironic that you lot all hate him even though he was congratulated by your King in the Pointy Hat what sits on his throne in Rome after the Battle of the Boyne? The present incumbent being a Nazi wank so that is why you lot relate to him hahahaha

  • I must admit I think it ironic how the Brits hate Germany but love the queen. Are they all that ignorant that they do not realise their queen is from German decent. The royal families name is actually Saxe-Coburg and it was only changed to Windsor in 1917 because of the anti-german sentiment in the country because of the war.

  • Ironic that plenty could not give a shit about the Queen, William or the rest.

I served in 3 Para and could and did not give a shit about any of them. Ignorant maybe, some just injoy the history. Many of you hate and kill your brothers just because of religion, now that's ignorant.

  • In the middle of that crisis Trevelyan published his views on the matter. He saw the Famine as a "mechanism for reducing surplus population". He described the famine as "The judgement of God sent the calamity to teach the Irish a lesson, that calamity must not be too much mitigated. ...The real evil with which we have to contend is not the physical evil of the Famine, but the moral evil of the selfish, perverse and turbulent character of the people"
