  • Great song.

  • Amazing...I hope to be able to play songs like this :)

  • @523062958 that is incorrect anyone who wishes to do it can they just need to practice the same as you have to do for anything

  • 天蔚藍,雲所白,大地初醒~

    湖之靜,瀑之動,綠意盎然~

    音之律,境如詩,收放自如~

    日照耀,夜來臨,極盡平衡~

  • sublime

  • Beautiful, thanks for the lyrics!

  • Beautiful music & beautifully played by the master -James Galway.

  • Beautiful music & beautifully played by the master -James Galway

  • Most people think that this song originates from Ireland however it is an american Frontiersman who wrote this about how he is in love with an Indian Chiefs daughter Shenandoah.

  • @golferknip11 I was told that this is about a person who sang about how he missed the shenandoah valley... and the video even has pictures of the shenandoah valley and blue ridge mountains -.-

  • @golferknip11 Like a lot of folk songs, the words vary, often by locality. It is known as an old sea (perhaps started as a river) chanty, or shanty. Sung all over the English speaking world by sailors and others.

  • I love this song! played it in my 8th grade band! :D I was first clarinet! :)

But idk if i'm feeling this... I dont like how he holds the notes and they sound all wavy, i think only brass can pull it off and make it sound good. But very good job! :D

  • @Chexks the wavy sound is called vibrato, it makes the flute sounds warmer, it is a professional technique, not everyone can do it......

  • It's about Old Virginia, and the homesickness felt by those who left her for a new place in the West.

  • 6 people aint nothin but a bunch of oxygen thieves

  • I sang this song for my men's choir, it instantly became my favorite out of all of my music!! great song in general, always brings about strong emotions, and just generally rocks everyone's socks

  • Quentin217 -- The song is about a rover's love of an indian girl and his declaration to her father, the chief, of his intent to go and make his fortune and then return to claim her and take her away with him. I'm sad for you that it boils down to race, but also glad to hear that at least you can appreciate the lovely melody. This is a beautiful version -- always was a James Galway fan!

  • can someone please tell me what kind of instrument starts at 1:29?

  • @flautist02

    Harmonica!!!

  • @spitfire9b oh how do you make a vibrato on a harmonica?

  • @flautist02

As a "flautist" you should be aware that the double row of holes in a tremolo harmonica produces a beautiful vibrato effect. Also, a vibrato sound can be very easily made on an ordinary harmonica using the diatonic technique of throat vibrato. Listen to some good harmonica players, like Toots Thielemans, to hear the possibilities for yourself. Okay?

  • @spitfire9b flautist is a flute player...why would a flute player need to know that?

  • @flautist02

Let me clarify. As a trained musician you should be aware of how vibratos are made on a fute as well as other instruments. Get it now dummy!

  • @spitfire9b well someone's being immature "dummy?" seriously? I'm not an adult incase ur wondering and even I have better manners than u. but ya got it now

  • @flautist02

Okay, you asked a rather inept question under the guise of being a knowlegeable flautist & I gave you a fair, legitimate answer. Then you made multiple challenging statements trying to make me look foolish or stupid when in fact all you displayed was your complete lack of knowledge of your claimed area of expertise. Now you plead that you are not an adult. Really, I don't really care - you're an ignorant troll. Now, get a life, an education & if possible, acquire some manners. Bye.

  • @spitfire9b I wasnt making u look like a fool. I asked one question, then another. How is that making you look like a fool? You, as an adult, should be able to answer simple questions without being insulting like saying dummy or ignorant troll. And even if I sounded inept, u could keep ur own comments to urself. They teach u that in elementary school. Now, have I ever called u a name? no. Im just reporting the facts of how u r acting. Calling me dummy was immature, wasnt it? Bye

  • @spitfire9b ok I admit portraying myself as a flautist was wrong. I made that when I was first chair in band so ya. now Bye!

  • @spitfire9b i already know how to make a vibrato on my flute. I don't see how a harmonica and a flute are related...

  • @flautist02

Since the flute and harmonic are both reed instruments, dumb-ass. You must be a flautist or musician in name only because your apparent lack of knowledge is overwhelming, either that or you are a YT troll.

  • @spitfire9b spitfire i have played flute for around 6 years and while you seem quite knowledgeable about flutes i have to ask what kind of flute you are speaking of? Because i don't believe you are speaking of a C flute as flautist02 may have been speaking of and i was genuinely confused by the reed instrument comment although i am glad to see that someone else knows of the complexities of the harmonica.

  • James Galway, truly a genius of music, I listened to his songs at the age of 2, and now I'm going play the flute myself. He could always capture the essence, the emotion of the story or occurrence in such a radiating way.

  • What is with the advertisement of the fat guy about mayonaise? Truly a staple of american "sheepleness". Like a jar of mayo is going to make a party happen in my mouth. The only thing that does that is shock top.

  • I remember this song from the early 19th century. It is about a white man who was refused permission by an old Indian for to marry his daughter. In despair, the white man departed westward for to seek his fortune. A white man myself who was never romantically attracted to any Indian, I could never fathom the feeling of what this song is about, but I always did appreciate the instrumental versions.

  • Im singing this song at school!

  • A little too much vibrato for my taste, but there is no denying he is AMAZING!!! James Galway is my idol.

  • @TheAranel34 Haha yeah, I've always thought that his vibrato is a little too "high" as my band director says, but you can't really criticize the man, being that he IS a genius and all! xD

  • I love this song...I love the Shenandoah Valley...I will never forget driving into Almost Heaven, West Virginia on the Blue Ridge Parkway overlooking the Shenandoah Valley....you do beautiful work..Sunsong..thank you for sharing your gifts..

  • I just moved to AZ from S. OH/ WV area and already I miss it. Thanks for the pics.

  • @ All the comments about this song not being an Irish Song

True, it is American however the melody comes from an Irish longing song, which makes sense seeing as there was a lot of Scots-Irish immigrants in the Shenandoah valley.

  • Just close your eyes and listen to this music....soo relaxing:)

James Galway is the best flute player on earth!

  • Just close your eyes and listen to this music....soo relaxing:)

James Galway is the best flute player on earh!

  • beautiful !!! Mr galway ,the very nice job!!!

  • Oh... yes.... Shenandoah, about a river.... I think it was an American river..... SOOO BEAUTIFUL...*Cries*

  • So is this song about Shenandoah Park in VA? I been there a few times and I remember how pretty it was.

  • I have always adored this beautiful song..I will never forget while traveling on the Blue Ridge Parkway...when I came upon Almost Heaven West Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley....what a heavenly sight to see...I have been so blessed visiting your beautiful corner of our YT Planet today...Thank you for sharing your gifts with us...

  • this is my choir

  • Shenandoah, I've fallen in love with you.

  • Beautiful. Thank you for posting!

  • james galway is amazing!!!!!! he inspired me to play the flute and i love it!!!! iv been playing 5 years and i still listen to him. ppl say im brill but i no im not as good as him

  • if you like this then look up 'Shenandoah Graduate Choir of New Zealand' and enjoy!!

  • is it wrong that I really, REALLY hate the vibrato in this?

In fact, I hate most types of vibrato, except on really high notes. Having said that, I'm more into jazz, and prefer growly tones ;)

  • Very nice indeed.

  • love this music so relaxing ,thanks for sharing

  • However far I travel, I'll always want to come back home to the beautiful Shenandoah. There's no place like it on earth!

  • Silence is the mother of all music...

  • @DancesWithLlamas most good music, curiously enough, appear to be on a theme of silence. When I feel down, I often feel much better after meditating on a pure C major chord for half an hour.

  • Fantastic!!!!

  • Why would this be an ireland song? It sings about the Shenandoah.. Lol its more a heartful song ^^

  • terrible arrangement;

    like elevator music

    terrible vibrato...pure corn

You can rely on Galway to always pour on the kitschy sound.

  • lurveess....so much purity in there...it touches the soul!

  • History's greatest flute player.

  • @jazzgent

    Hardly;

    Hubert Laws is.

  • @Rexicano are you still in highschool? You comments make me think so.

  • @jazzgent

Someone with the name "Jazz Gent" thinks Galway is the best player?

I guess you really don't like Jazz that much. Galway can't play Jazz to save his life...and he ruins every ballad with his awful sound.

You should rename yourself; Elevator Music Gent...

    cause that's what you are.

  • very beaautiful. one of my favorite pieces of music!!! so peaceful and sweet.

    thank you, Glenn. 5*.

  • The perfect sound and video....God's peace

  • I thinl Shenandoah was a great movie,& great song.

  • wonderfull

  • excellent version of this classic song

  • I love James you such great flute player and I am flute player too.

  • Este James es el p*** amo. Se me enamora el alma. Un piececito para mi cerda André.

  • How lovely! Thanks for the post

  • Thanks for the share Glenn. When my kids were young, I took them to Shenandoah National Park. This video reminded me of that -- it's really a beautiful place and hard to believe it is so close to DC.

  • this doesn't sound like flute, it's so pretty!

  • I love the sound that he make with his flute.

  • Reminds me of my ancestors that were from this valley in Virginia (Virginy)...some of them fought with Gen. Stonewall Jackson and Gen. Breckenridge trying to save the Shenandoah from the Yanks'. It is such a beautiful place...

  • that is so beautiful!

  • This song brings tears to my eyes its so beautiful!!!! This is a wonderful song.

  • Beautifully done by James Galway

  • Beautiful Song!

  • A beautiful i played an arrangement that my friend wrote for me a few months ago, its a lovely peice to play :D

  • Quiero verlo interpretando una pieza de Joaquin Rodrigo, Sir Galway le gustaba mucho la música del maestro Rodrigo

  • james last do it brilliant if you can find it from 1973

  • Relaxing, beautiful! James Galway is usch a talent!

  • Ah the scenery from that part of Virginia is so, so lovely. I'm fortunate to be traveling there in a few weeks. This song is SO evocative of the river and the mountains there. And Galway is of course a master.

  • its so beautiful....i can see me and my boyfriend elegantly running thru a field...sunset nearing....just so beautiful...im always so into this song!

  • had to do this song for solo ensemble. great song :)

  • i love this song.. im singing it my my chorus in middle school

  • this song is about falling in love with a river

  • It's such a beautiful song! Thanks so much for posting this song. I had the first Jame Galway's cassatte more than 26 years ago. However, it got lost. I miss this song so much, but I didn't know what is the name of this song. I just try my luck to search on You Tube, and I found it here. Thanks again! I just started learning German flute last autumn. I'm almost 40 years now. I hope I can play this peiece one day.

  • Beautiful as always..

  • Hi, you may be right about the Irish and records. My G-grandfather was Irish, I never knew him but have heard lots of stories about him . He is the only one of our family that I can't find out much about possibly because his last name was Brown. Genealogy , and researching are something I love to do, big hobby of mine. It all got started by trying to find my ancestors who served in the Civil War, most of my ancestors migrated from Virginia.

  • Makes my hair stand on the back of my neck. When I hear this beautiful rendition it reminds me of the many lives sacrificed here during the American Civil War.

  • You to? It has the same effect on me. It reminds me of all those boys who lost their lives in the great Civil War. It touches the soul and breaks the heart. It also reminds me that my gggg-grandmother was part Native American, Cherokee from Virginia/ Tennessee.

  • Hi SoBelleoTN.

    My very sentiments!

I first heard this rendition some twenty years ago. I still get the same tingling when I hear it today. I love the part in the middle when I think a harmonica comes in.

My, you can go back many generations, your lucky - I go back maybe to my Grandfather - thats it.

Keeping records may not have been the Irish's? greatest trait.

  • This is beautiful.

    Thank you.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • I'd kill for that tone. *_* This is beautiful!!

  • goodness galway's tone is so spot-on clear and so very pure.

  • Oops I looked up the origin of the song and it's actually located in Virginia, not Ireland. lol

  • Thanks for your comments. Sir James Galway is Irish. Maybe that counts :-)

  • @jennbee08 yeah for the Shenandoah River located in western VA.

  • @jennbee08

the shenandoa valley is in Virginia. Staunton, Verona and all that area make up the henandoah vally i live there

  • @jennbee08 This song is just about as beautiful as Virginia. I'm a Virginian and every time I hear this song it brings me to tears (especially this version). Thank you Sir James Galway!

  • @jennbee08 im in North Carolina but im from va lol

  • Beautiful.

And I would love to live in Ireland. Not right now, though, since it's in a recession at the moment :/

  • i have heard allot of renditions of this great song from time past, but listening to the way you bring out the inotation of flawness on the flute sounds absolutely beautifull to the sound of ones ear listening to this beautifull song from time past .great upload !!!!

  • Beutiful video. Amaizing. Like a dream.

  • Thanks so much for your kind comment. I appreciate it.

  • @Sunsong23 i play flute and i played this my 10th grade year of high school and we did an amazing job on it. I had the solo part I didn't think i was ready but I was because i had another flute player in there with me and she was older and i got the solo instead it I thought i was horrible but i really wasnt and i love james Galway playing i got his cd in my bookstore last year

  • This is amazing. I used to listen to this song and when I closed my eyes I would imagine water, or more specifically travelling down a river. Seems you and I had a similar vision! At the harmonica part at 1:30 I always imagined travelling down a river at night in a small canoe. I found a lot of Galway's songs seems to transport you to another time and place. Thanks for posting!

  • I've posted the words to Shenandoah in the info section. I hope that is helpful.

  • Dear Unsung Sunsong:

Thank you for your reply. Many years ago, in Miami, I was present at a performance by Sir James Galway, prior to being knighted. I patiently waited after the performance and saw and spoke with him. My funny comment made him smile. His hair color was still bright, reminiscent of red and I said that he made me think of an impish Irish Leprechaun!....he chuckled. He is so polite and ever to uniquely talented!. His music has lifted my spirit many times

  • That's right. Sunsong needs more accolades :-)

Thanks for sharing a bit about your time with Sir Galway! I am mot surprised that he is a polite and friendly man with a sense of humor.

take care - and thanks for your comments

  • What a beauty=full video you have made. It's so amazing that we can all see this through your eyes and marvel, especially when we haven't been blessed to see it in person with our own. Thank you!.

  • Thank you. I read your message a few times. You have given me something wonderful to ponder. I really appreciate that. This particular song has an almost transcendent quality to it to me. By that I mean it seems able to *lift* us up to a new, if only momentary, perception. And Sir Galway takes it form there :-)

  • I was driven across the Shenendoah valley in September 2001 just a few days after 9/11. The beauty of this vast and stunning country got to us all. This lovely music has brought it all back to me. there wasn't much said in the car..we were all alone with our thoughts..knowing that America would be big enough and strong enough to absorb this awful tragedy.I will remember the beautiful scenery for the rest of my life..good luck Johnny Yank.....from England.

  • Thanks so much for your beautiful message. I am really touched and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

  • This is one of my favorite American folk songs and it's absolutely beautiful, I love playing this because every time I play it, I always see gorgeous country side views and alot of the pictures in this video. Thanks for posting.

  • You are most welcome. I am happy to read that you play it. It is a wonderful song, isn't it.

  • Thanks for posting. This is just wonderful. I like it very much.

  • wow...

    so beautiful...

  • excellent rendition

  • This is one of the best flute songs that I've ever heard. Very peaceful, serene and sort of 'mystical'.
