Music as an art form isn't commensurable, but subjectively momentous vehicle of expression. Thus all debate on whether some performance is better that other is subjective. I wouldn't say that the argument is unnecessary though. Personally, I like the interplay of these fine musicians, even though Mehldau's style differs from Mays.
This is a beautiful song but I must confess that I am unable to warm up to Brad Mehldau. I consider all of Metheny's collaborations with Lyle Mays to be much better than any collaboration with Mehldau.
I'm not saying anything negative about Brad's playing, which is unquestionably excellent, but I prefer Lyle's playing about a million to one.
that's curious, for me Mehldau's playing gives something more to Metheny's music than Mays' does... I think their styles melt great together... but I have also to admit that Mehldau is one of my favorite pianists, maybe my favorite ^^
@Auriga37 wow! when I saw Pat n Brad perform this tune live, I couldn't help but to think of my mom... ugh!!! I turn into a marshmellow everytime i hear this.
Simply beautiful..... touches my heart and soul with peace ......¸¸.♫♪ Լღvє ♪♫.¸¸

Agreed. No disrespect to Mr. Mehldau. I, too, prefer Lyle's collaborations with Pat.

This was the first music I heard after learning that my mother had died. It will be forever special to me.
