I think that the crowd distracted Crisp at the shoulder and he wandered and Richard Putman had to right him and that must have been a waste of 2 lengths - if he had kept him to the right he would have won also he could have walloped him hard but didn't
yeah fair point but thats just my opinion, along with other contenders such as longrun and kauto star? shame all these race horses are from different era's, would be a good race watching them all run :P
ok firstly red rum was a good horse but not the best, no horse is even close to big bucks, big bucks has won his last 15 out of 15 races what a record if you asked.
@Pussylover00 Come back and tell me that again in 2 years - Red Rum won the National in 1973, 1974, came second in 75 & 76 and then won it again in 1977. Big Buck's has an impressive record running 3 mile races but how would he fair over 4.5 miles at Aintree?
It reminds me why I hated the National as a kid, seeing them horses getting thrashed and run to destruction seemed cruel beyond belief.. Red Rum though gives me a lump in my throat at the thought of him racing.Part of childhood round here
Red Rum would have run into to finish that race a wall and Crisp would have followed. It will be lloke upon as one of if not the Greatest races of altime
Red Rum the best race horse ever. My dad worked for Ginger many many years ago, from stable boy to a few small races as to why I love horses. This is the best race of all time. Nobody would ever forget Red Rum.
What a shame that he was whipped for most of his life and kept alone in stables. Someone once told me that horses don't feel a whip very much. You take a horse and whip it's not got a steel bit in it's mouth, and see what happens. Cruel sport for the pleasure of humans, no better than cock fighting or dog fighting.
@justpapersman Absolute moronic, ignorant comment. How on earth can you compare horse racing to dog & cock fighting?! You have obviously never been involved in any element of horse racing. Just another know nothing commenting on something they know nothing about.
@VoteBNP1000 Crisp was a marvellous horse, but he did not win the Grand National so cannot be regarded as the best Grand National horse. Red Rum did win off 12 st and won that race 3 times, once at the age of 12, and he also came second twice so he is the best Grand National horse.
every time i watch this i cant believe Crisp does not win in the final furlong. The gap seems to big.....tremendous...and I had a 10p bet on Red Rum as a 8 year old.
my dad put a fiver on this horse for me and he won ,but all i got was a fiver ,great race rip rr world beater on four legs, Dad wheres my money from the national, bastard spent it on beer.
Look, I speak to dead horses PERSONALLY; I have the gift of connecting with them as a spiritual medium almost every day- let me tell you, they are always inspiring me to change my corrupt life for the better.
Their souls are all at peace- racing was their one purpose and pleasure in life. All day long they jump & frolic among the clouds. The thought that people bet hard-earned money on them to win makes them smile & shiver with pleasure, safe forever in their own version of heaven.
Too bad Red Rum wasn't born in recent years: they could have preserved his seed prior to gelding and spawned heaps of awesome progeny for generations to come.
Poor old Crisp. He has to be the candidate for Greatest National horse to complete and not win.Giving 23lbs to Red Rum over 4m4f and losing by 3/4 length in record time.Off levels weights you would need binoculars to see Rum behind.Crisp should have a statute too at Aintree.Crisp was a legend and todays watered down Aintree fences(wrecked by H&S/Animal rights) would have been a stroll in the park. Its about time Crisp was honoured in National Hunt Folklaw...
Those were the days, when men were men, horses were real horses that ran regularly so the public could support them and love them and the fences were real fences - a true test of horse & rider and not these twigs that modern day jockeys sh it themselves over !
In the days before cable they would show a delayed replay of the Grand National on ABC's Wide World of Sports in the U.S. I got to see all three of Red Rum's victories. It wasn't until I watched this video and looked up the history of the 1973 race did I realize that Crisp was spotting Red Rum 24 pounds. 24 POUNDS! Over that distance!?!? I thought you people liked horses! If I were Australian I call foul. Well at least Crisp got him at Hayden Park the following year - at equal weights!
When we consider the quality of the horse he was trying to give heaps of weight to Crisp's performance is this race is one of the great great national runs. What a noble spirited battling classy horse. We all love Rummy but that Crisp run was the greatest national run in my lifetime.
Awesome performance from Crisp but why oh why didn't Dick Pitman pull his whip through earlier, it may well of made the difference between winning and losing. Gutted for the horse but credit to Red Rum and Brian Fletcher, they never stopped chasing. This is my favourite memory of the great race!!:-)
There is a very long held tradition of the leader falling at Becher's in the national: Andy Pandy; Tied Cottage; Nereo; Golden Wrapper; Black Appalachi;Butler's Cabin(baulked), and many others I'm forgetting but just look at both Crisp and Red Rum clearing it here. They fly through the air so far out over it that the drop is compromised and they land almost like planes touching down on a runway.
@alipitogen Uncle Merlin in 1990 was another one as I recall alipitogen. He was just leading Mr Frisk and they were a good 10 lengths clear when crumbling on landing and unseating Hywel Davies at 2nd Bechers. I was gutted, as I had backed him weeks before and the way he was going I'm sure he would of won. He came over from America as his owner wanted a crack at the National. If memory serves me Captain Tim Forster trained him, but never heard anything about him after the National.
@MEECHIO Thanks, I'd forgotten that one , but after I posted I remembered Beau Bob in 1971.It is amazing how often it has happened and I'm sure there are so many more. I often wonder why the TV presenters haven't latched onto it and researched it. Is it a trend of recent years and is there a reason why a horse out on his own in front is in more danger from the drop -something to do with front-running perhaps?
@alipitogen What an ass I am! - and this has only occurred to me now. It has to be down to the curse of Captain Becher! Wasn't he leading? That fence must be haunted.
My 1st ever bet was in this race on Spanish Steps, I backed it in the next 2 to 3 Nationals & never jumped on the Red Rum bandwagon. Only ever backed it to win & I think it got placed once or twice over the coming years but I was a mug punter back then & all the bad habits I learned in the 70s still haunt my backing today & to think I was only 7 going on 8 when the 1973 Grand National was run. lol. Bloody Red Rum, you gotta love him though he cost me my pocket money. Well it is murder b/wards
ITS A GOOD JOB I WASN'T BORN THEN COS IF I BACKED RED RUM IT WAS GUARENTEED TO LOSE LIKE REST OF HORSES I BACK I NEED A DIFFRENT GAME HORSE RACING HAS COST ME TOO MUCH OVER THE YEARS
Just shows how very cruel is handicapping NH horses. Not sport at all. Poor Dick Pitman not only did he lose the GN but the Gold Cup as well three weeks earlier on
Pendil who was one of the best horses to never win a Gold Cup; just got beaten by the Dikler.
no matter how many times i watch this race i still hope Crisp will hold on to win in the run up one day...... and that poor old Grey Sombrero hadn't broken his leg falling at the chair.
@ritchie93 Glad you mentioned Grey Sombrero. I think he jumped the chair quite well, got good height, never looked like falling till he landed. It's possible his foreleg snapped on landing, poor thing , but you can see that his stifle does clip the top of the fence as he rises and perhaps he prolongs his rise too much without enough bascule. This may have brought him too much onto his forehand in landing. I was always very sad about this oft forgotten detail of the best National.
@HANTSAND He went hunting with the Northumberland and died of a heart attack at the age of 24. He is buried under a cherry tree and every April the tree blossoms. Very appropriate as this is the time of year when the National is run.
My goodness, Crisp very much proved that he was an extremely talented horse. To give Red Rum 23 pounds and still finish a very close second is absolutely remarkable. Imagine if they had been at equal weights; Crisp likely would have won by a wide margin.
I remember Crisp as a young boy in Australia. He won many jump races here by big margins but ended up getting huge weights. I believe the error his jockey made was actually using the whip if he had kept going hands and heels I am sure the result would have been different but take a look at Red Rum I think he could have went around again.
1. goodwinmum: Red Rum was undoubtedly a tremendous champion, there's no denyong that, but the 23 lbs he received was a major disadvantage for Crisp. Additionally, Red Rum won the next year, but nearly 20 seconds slower while carrying the maximum 12 st. At level weights I just happen to think Crisp would have won this particular race handily, not taking anything away from the great Red Rum.
2. Crisp did run against Red Rum in the following year and beat him at level weights in the 3m2f Doncaster Pattern Stakes at Haydock Park, another course with drop fences, so I think my opinion holds some water. I do agree that Pitman was in error using the whip; Crisp shied away from it noticeably and it hurt his momentum. He surely would have gotten up had that error not been made.
Correction: my previous comment should have read Doncaster Pattern Chase, not Stakes, and it took place later in 1973, on November 10th, not in 1974. Regardless, it's tough to watch the game Crisp lose out so unluckily here; he deserved so much better. In his defense, he still holds the fastest record time with 12 st on his back, finishing in roughly 9:02, behind Red Rum's 9:01.9 with 10.5 st. Crisp's effort says an awful lot about his talent. I'm very impressed with him, if you hadn't noticed!
@goodwinmum Yes, so do I. Bert Bryant's racecalls of Crisp clearing the fences will live with me forever. He cas lay claim to being the greatest jumper ever. Red Rum's durability has never been equalled, but Crisp was clearly superior over shorter jumps courses and would have beaten him at equal weights in the epic Grand National. Sadly, for Australia, jumos racing will be phased out forever next year, so we will never send another Crisp, St Stevens or Karasi overseas to take in the best.
red rum was a out n out aintree horse, cart horse at any other track, never see another red rum.must say dick pitman was didnt look the fittest jockey last 200-300 yards lol
Crisp ... I think he may probalby be the unluckiest loser ever in Grand National history. And it's a pity that there will be less chance to produce another great Australian steeplechaser like him since nearly all jump races in Australia have been banned due to the reasons of safety.
dont think so svendbosanvovski rummy won on top weight at the grand national as well . crisp was a good jumper but look at rummys grand nationals won three out of five and never fell in the national PS its a shame you wont be able to watch horeses over the jumps in your country. tell you what if they banned it here horse racing would go under
I was a boy when Crisp emerged on the Australian racing scene. He was unbeatable over the jumps, and won everything he could be entered into. Weight threatened to kill him and so he took on the world. He went to the US and won their richest jumps race before going to the UK. If this were at set weights, Crisp would have won by many lengths. Clearly, he was greater than the mighty Red Rum, and probably the best jumper ever. Sadly, jumps racing will be ended forever in Australia next year.
jnmkl09 It was the following year, 1974, that Red Rum became a horse apart, a National hero. This time it was Red Rum's turn to carry 12st, making him 241b worse off with dual Gold Cup winner L'Escargot, third the previous year. Red Rum was not a big horse, but he and Brian Fletcher won by an easy seven lengths, the first horse since Reynoldstown in 1936 to have won the great race twice. enough said
Sometimes winning isn't the be all and end all. If there had been no Red Rum and Crisp had won by a distance from L'Escargot, we wouldn't remember it so well. Crisp has gone down as a great because he ran with such a weight pull, it was a fantastic race and Red Rum went on to do such great things at Aintree. It's the best race I've ever seen and ever expect to see.
Crisp was obviously a hell of a horse - no one ever gave Red Rim 2 stone again. He wander at the elbow and that is all but it should have won from where he was but if you that's bad check out Devon Locks race!!
Good onya's for all supporting the massacre of the Grand National. Way to go to completely tire and kill a horse. And no, I dont care what you others think to this comment. Im allowed my personal opinion of steeple chasing and that was it. Sware at me all you want, I'll still sleep at night.
@howzathumdinger its in their blood you ignorant fool be cruel not to race them .why do you think rider less horses carry on?making a regular horse ride a race maybe but these are RACE HORSES the clue s in the name dimwit
I find you incredibly funny grimlygrim! I'm actually a big supporter of flat racing. I exercise racehorses occasionally for a racing stable so I think I'd know a little bit about the fight or flight instincts. A horse keeps running because it's a herd animal, it's instincts tell it to follow the herd. Racehorses are elite athletes and are bred and trained to be equipped for this but it doesn't make the sport less dangerous. If the same amount of human athletes fell in the herdles at the olympics
(cont. on) then the herdles would be banned because of the risk element to it! There is no way that the sport would be continued on with the amount of injuries, fatigue and fatalities that steeple chasing has. But they are animals, not high in the pecking order so they do not deserve the conservation we get. So grimlygrim, get a clue, I'm actually not a dimwit. Maybe you need to rethink your intelligence before making an accusation about mine.
@howzathumdinger this humble pie does nt taste so good.Point taken. But do u think nicholls o neil gifford etc all genuine horse loverswould put their horses thru cruelty
Most likely than not but the sport itself is horrible. The horses may enjoy it but I'm sure they don't when they do not clear the ridiculously high jump and break their neck or leg and have to lie there on the track and if they are in front, get trampled by other horses. The amount of fatigue the horses suffer because of the long distance is digusting too. I'm sure no good trainer would consider it cruel because essentially it's not, but everyone treats horses different.
bryngOneOn. red rum was buried at the winning post at aintree (no coffin) just rummy with a brief gathering including ginger mcCain is wife and is son and a few others hope that helps.
i'm not being disrespectful but i've got one of those questions that may seem a bit odd, but the more i dwell on it the more it vexes me. right, Red rum was buried at the winning post at aintree, i know that and i've just seen a picture of the fenced off grave stone, but was there a burial service and if there was , was he buried in a coffin and heres the question what shape was red rums coffin? i keep seeing a trojan horse in my head! plz help
What an amazing win for Red Rum. The ground he made up is absolutly incredible considering he ran four miles. Crisp was unlucky and Im not sure he knew Red Rum was as close as he was to him but fair is fair. Red Rum won on his own determination and guts. The most amazing long distance horse ever. I doubt his achievment will ever be repeated.
Pitman wasn't really the problem. The two issues were weight and distance. Crisp was a former 2m Champion Chase winner and simply ran out of stamina at the end of the 4m 4f National (especially carrying so much weight).
ahhhh the memories i was all but 8 years old when red rum won and put 50p of my pocket money in a sweepstake we had at home with my parents and my sisters for red rum to win.... happy days
Grey Sombrero jumped the chair in 2nd behind Crisp (the first fence you see in this clip) and you'll see him get up and stagger away to the side, you can see in the background as they jump the next (water) that he his held and limping with a broken leg...so was put to sleep ! (not killed a la Dark Ivy in 1987 at Bechers, a real shocker !)...
Red Rum a great no doubt, but give me a break... Crisp got tired yeh... but Richard Pittman was far worse. Crisp would have won by a mile with an Aussie jumps jockey on board.
You know when I listened to the this race on radio (through a lot of static!) back in 1973, I said at time "this jockey is murdering this horse". Replays only confirm this. He over used the horse and at the end his urgings only served to unbalance a very tired horse. Crisp did not need to lead by a "fence". What was he thinking? I have no doubt Red Rum was a superior horse in the end, but Crisp was not well riden on that day. By the way, you know nothing about Aussie jockeys...do you?
Sheesh, what a slog! Haven't seen this one before, but I think Crisp's jockey lost the race for him really, why let him bowl along so freely when he was so far in front? Isn't that a great chance for a breather? Won't deny that Red Rum was wonderful in finishing, classic race.
I think that the crowd distracted Crisp at the shoulder and he wandered and Richard Putman had to right him and that must have been a waste of 2 lengths - if he had kept him to the right he would have won also he could have walloped him hard but didn't

no matter how many times i watch this race i still hope Crisp will hold on to win in the run up one day...... and that poor old Grey Sombrero hadn't broken his leg falling at the chair.
ritchie93 1 year ago
@ritchie93 Glad you mentioned Grey Sombrero. I think he jumped the chair quite well, got good height, never looked like falling till he landed. It's possible his foreleg snapped on landing, poor thing , but you can see that his stifle does clip the top of the fence as he rises and perhaps he prolongs his rise too much without enough bascule. This may have brought him too much onto his forehand in landing. I was always very sad about this oft forgotten detail of the best National.

As much as I loved Red Rum, Ihave to feel sorry for Crisp in this race. Led the whole way round, jumped beautifully, just cruelly lost it at the end.

any idea what happened to Crisp when he retired?
HANTSAND 2 years ago
@HANTSAND Have you eaten horse meat.?
TheWolveswolves 1 year ago
@HANTSAND He went hunting with the Northumberland and died of a heart attack at the age of 24. He is buried under a cherry tree and every April the tree blossoms. Very appropriate as this is the time of year when the National is run.

@MikeandJayne1
thank you for that - a nice resting place for a great horse
HANTSAND 1 year ago
@MikeandJayne1 Beautifully expressed. Is there a marker? There should be. He was the Phar Lap of Australian jumping.
SvendBosanvovski 1 year ago
My goodness, Crisp very much proved that he was an extremely talented horse. To give Red Rum 23 pounds and still finish a very close second is absolutely remarkable. Imagine if they had been at equal weights; Crisp likely would have won by a wide margin.
Thank you for posting this amazing race.
cf1970 2 years ago 3
@cf1970
I remember Crisp as a young boy in Australia. He won many jump races here by big margins but ended up getting huge weights. I believe the error his jockey made was actually using the whip if he had kept going hands and heels I am sure the result would have been different but take a look at Red Rum I think he could have went around again.
goodwinmum 2 years ago
1. goodwinmum: Red Rum was undoubtedly a tremendous champion, there's no denyong that, but the 23 lbs he received was a major disadvantage for Crisp. Additionally, Red Rum won the next year, but nearly 20 seconds slower while carrying the maximum 12 st. At level weights I just happen to think Crisp would have won this particular race handily, not taking anything away from the great Red Rum.
cf1970 2 years ago 4
Take care.
cf1970 2 years ago 4
Correction: my previous comment should have read Doncaster Pattern Chase, not Stakes, and it took place later in 1973, on November 10th, not in 1974. Regardless, it's tough to watch the game Crisp lose out so unluckily here; he deserved so much better. In his defense, he still holds the fastest record time with 12 st on his back, finishing in roughly 9:02, behind Red Rum's 9:01.9 with 10.5 st. Crisp's effort says an awful lot about his talent. I'm very impressed with him, if you hadn't noticed!
cf1970 2 years ago 3
@goodwinmum Yes, so do I. Bert Bryant's racecalls of Crisp clearing the fences will live with me forever. He cas lay claim to being the greatest jumper ever. Red Rum's durability has never been equalled, but Crisp was clearly superior over shorter jumps courses and would have beaten him at equal weights in the epic Grand National. Sadly, for Australia, jumos racing will be phased out forever next year, so we will never send another Crisp, St Stevens or Karasi overseas to take in the best.
SvendBosanvovski 1 year ago

Crisp ... I think he may probalby be the unluckiest loser ever in Grand National history. And it's a pity that there will be less chance to produce another great Australian steeplechaser like him since nearly all jump races in Australia have been banned due to the reasons of safety.

dont think so svendbosanvovski rummy won on top weight at the grand national as well . crisp was a good jumper but look at rummys grand nationals won three out of five and never fell in the national PS its a shame you wont be able to watch horeses over the jumps in your country. tell you what if they banned it here horse racing would go under
chippyax 2 years ago
I was a boy when Crisp emerged on the Australian racing scene. He was unbeatable over the jumps, and won everything he could be entered into. Weight threatened to kill him and so he took on the world. He went to the US and won their richest jumps race before going to the UK. If this were at set weights, Crisp would have won by many lengths. Clearly, he was greater than the mighty Red Rum, and probably the best jumper ever. Sadly, jumps racing will be ended forever in Australia next year.
SvendBosanvovski 2 years ago
Britishrailer yeah sit at your comp by yourself you know nothing loser
chippyax 2 years ago
jnmkl09 It was the following year, 1974, that Red Rum became a horse apart, a National hero.

Good onya's for all supporting the massacre of the Grand National. Way to go to completely tire and kill a horse. And no, I dont care what you others think to this comment. Im allowed my personal opinion of steeple chasing and that was it. Sware at me all you want, I'll still sleep at night.
howzathumdinger 2 years ago
Like I would lose sleep over your comments.
Britishrailer 2 years ago
@howzathumdinger its in their blood you ignorant fool be cruel not to race them .why do you think rider less horses carry on?making a regular horse ride a race maybe but these are RACE HORSES the clue s in the name dimwit
grimlygrim 2 years ago
I find you incredibly funny grimlygrim! I'm actually a big supporter of flat racing. I exercise racehorses occasionally for a racing stable so I think I'd know a little bit about the fight or flight instincts. A horse keeps running because it's a herd animal, it's instincts tell it to follow the herd. Racehorses are elite athletes and are bred and trained to be equipped for this but it doesn't make the sport less dangerous. If the same amount of human athletes fell in the herdles at the olympics
howzathumdinger 2 years ago
(cont. on) then the herdles would be banned because of the risk element to it! There is no way that the sport would be continued on with the amount of injuries, fatigue and fatalities that steeple chasing has. But they are animals, not high in the pecking order so they do not deserve the conservation we get. So grimlygrim, get a clue, I'm actually not a dimwit. Maybe you need to rethink your intelligence before making an accusation about mine.
howzathumdinger 2 years ago
@howzathumdinger this humble pie does nt taste so good.Point taken. But do u think nicholls o neil gifford etc all genuine horse loverswould put their horses thru cruelty
grimlygrim 2 years ago
Most likely than not but the sport itself is horrible. The horses may enjoy it but I'm sure they don't when they do not clear the ridiculously high jump and break their neck or leg and have to lie there on the track and if they are in front, get trampled by other horses. The amount of fatigue the horses suffer because of the long distance is digusting too. I'm sure no good trainer would consider it cruel because essentially it's not, but everyone treats horses different.

exxyeddie 2 years ago
What an amazing win for Red Rum. The ground he made up is absolutly incredible considering he ran four miles. Crisp was unlucky and Im not sure he knew Red Rum was as close as he was to him but fair is fair. Red Rum won on his own determination and guts. The most amazing long distance horse ever. I doubt his achievment will ever be repeated.
STHFGDBY 2 years ago
Pitman wasn't really the problem. The two issues were weight and distance. Crisp was a former 2m Champion Chase winner and simply ran out of stamina at the end of the 4m 4f National (especially carrying so much weight).

HIPCPETER 2 years ago
Red Rum a great no doubt, but give me a break... Crisp got tired yeh... but Richard Pittman was far worse. Crisp would have won by a mile with an Aussie jumps jockey on board.
michael99able 2 years ago
You idiot. The horse was out on his feet - and an Aussie jockey wouldn't have got round the freaking course.
MGH888 2 years ago
