I bought a used 2006 Sonata in summer of 2010. Since I've had it, I've replaced 3 window regulators. Other then that, can't complain. But yes, their window mechanisms are problematic. Hopefully they have made improvements in the newer models.
Hi all- i own a 2006 Hyundai Elantra and have had automatic windows break down 9 times for drivers door, twice for passenger door, once the glass just crumbled in my hands. My dealership up here tries to blame it on me, after charging me $175 to glue the window back into the metal clips they then say i didnt wait 24 hrs to let glue set (i waited 72 hrs, to be sure). If there is a class action suit- I WANT IN!
@albanystock If there is a class action for these crummy windows, I want in too. To my knowledge, nobody cares. You checked out this video. I have 2 others posted on here. Both show you how to do the job yourself, and can save you a bundle. The job takes about an hour, and yes, you CAN do it. (God help me, I sound like O'Bama). LOL If they are still under warranty, you're at the mercy of the dealer doing the job. When warranty runs out, get new ones from 1-A Auto on line. $48.00, (American),
businesses have no clue how far customer service get them!
that is why mac is doing so well, their products are overpriced and hyped up... but they keep a ton of customers by just simply talking to them and offering solutions if you have a defect (or dropped it).
@will8675 Thanks for your input... and oddly enough... or maybe not so odd... I just had to replace window regulator #11. Lucky for me, I found a place online that sells after market types. $47.00 for a new one and that included shipping. I installed it and it works great, for now. However... now my window is having a tracking issue where it's all wobbley going up, and tries to go off the track. I even took this to a body shop, and they shrugged their shoulders.
@jessiebean100 I feel your pain. Now, I have to use a pair of needle-nosed pliers to change the heat setting in the car. The knob fell off of the dashboard, and I can't get the damned thing back on. So now, I gotta stop the car, put the pliers on the shaft for the knob, and turn it. I know it's not big deal, but it is annoying as all hell.
The Video Response i posted was showing you how the JB weld held up. That crap is hard as a rock man its not going anywere so if that stuff you got doesnt work use the jb weld. however the window still moves LOL so idk.
lol Im not sure if i mentioned before but ive also had to replace BOTH of my drive shafts passenger and driver side. Also BOTH of my Wheel bearings in the front as well. Im like ok what else can go wrong... just kinda wait for somthing else to break LOL.
@jrpg10389 Don't ever ask the "what next" question. You'll get bit in the ass, and that is with everything in life, not just the car. Right now, I need a new front strut and and an engine mount. I will try to do both myself. What's the worst that could happen. The spring on the strut kill me ?? I'm not that lucky.
LOL thats what happened to me I was driving my 2000 elantra and i went to roll up the back window, i heard a snap and then smack looked back and my window fell all the way into the door. That was the second time. Right now Im on my third regulator(drivers side front). Probably gonna DIY this one instead of the shop. Other than that tho its a great car never had any serious problems just typical repairs other than CV joints. that was costly
CV Joints ?? Never had to replace those yet... I don't think. Do the joints come with the whole new front axel ?? If so, then I have... TWICE. My CV boots on my front axels have torn twice. Both times, I had the entire axel replaced. It's actually cheaper to get it done that way, if youcan't do the job yourself. (Some repairs I'll tackle... but if it's something where the wheel can fall off... I'll let a pro do it). LOL
@thelazycomic Yes they do the joints are part of the axel. So when, like you said, the boot tears and joint get screwed up, you just replace the whole axel cause its cheaper. And thank you for your videos they were a BIG help, i had no idea what I was looking at when i took the panel off. I also found that (ohh what a surprise!) mine broke in the same two places as yours.
BTW... don't know if you've ever changed your own window regulator, but I also have two vids on YouTube on how to do the job yourself. One is dis-assembly... the other is istallation. Those vids have helped lots of folks do the job themselves. Just thought you may need them to help you out.
Your not kidding man i have a 2000 hyundai elantra that i have replaced all 4 window regulators on. I Got the regulators for 30 dollars a piece and i just tell people to leave my windows alone LOL. And im not trolling "thelazycomic" but the correct way to say hyundai is Hun day. =)
Funny on the Hun-day thing. It's that damned Y in there that gets me. I try to pronounce it too. So it comes out like HYON-DAY. Do I look Korean? ROFL. Maybe I shouldn't ask that. My dad did serve in the Korean War.
No you dont really look korean lmao, I also have problems with the window tracks my windows try to move when i roll them up and down. I replaced both front window tracks and it held the windows in place correctly for about a week then they both started rocking back and forth again. If i dont hold the window in place it will try and near pop completely out of the track. Hell i want 2 thousand dollars! Lol id say its wayy to late to get that but eh i never heard anything about it.
Okay, latest development on the windows. I am now having the same problem. Here it is. The PLASTIC clips that attach to the windows. These are what the window regulator actually screw on to. They crack. Not the regulator, but the attaching clips that glue to the window. Right now, I have the internal panel off of my door so that I can "help" the window be guided up. These windows simply suck. I've never seen anything like it. I've tried gluing that part, but it's made from some weird plastic.
I Tried using JB weld loll and that didnt hold up im gonna try and clean the clips out the best i can and try some crazy combo of glue and jb weld or something and leave it alone for a week or so.
@jrpg10389 Let me know how that works for you. I bought some kind of "super glue" stuff at Radio Shack that is supposed to glue ANYTHING. (Yeah, like I haven't heard that line before). I bought it, but haven't tried it yet. (Too cold right now). I told the guy at Radio Shack if it didn't work, I was bringing it back. We shall see.
LOL ill let ya know how that works, "offtopic" I saw in one of your videos your living in a storage shed? Holy shit that damn hyundai done bled ya dry? LOL Ive been busy lately mothers in the hospital and the weathers been bad so i havnt messed with the car at all, however its a nice day today and i may see about fixing that damned window AGAIN its embarassing trying to hold the window still as i roll it up hoping the regulator doesnt bind up and that plastic snap inside of there
@jrpg10389 On the "off topic" comment, it wasn't the Hyundai that bled me dry, it was this lousy Untied States economy. The only thing more rare than jobs out there is O'Dick'as birth certificate. Damned, this country needs a good leader. Wish we had SOMEBODY who could do the job, but these boobs we get. One right after another. I made a joke after the current boob got into the House of No Hope that we'd be looking back at the Bush years as good times. I was joking... but then ??
I have a 2000 hyundai elantra which is the same as the 99. I have replaced all 4 window regulators and just decided to spend 30 dollars a piece on them at a pay and pull pulling them out of totalled hyundai's the problem was finding one they had that actually had the regulators in it i figured it was a common problem seeing as it took me a couple months to find one there because they were always taken lol.
I was kind of afraid to buy a used window regulator from a scrap yard. I figured, even if you could find one, who knew how much life would be left on it, so I opted for a new one from Hyundai. I can think of better things to do than keep replacing these things over and over again. Another key to making them last. Don't put the windows completely down. I keep them up a couple of inches. Maybe it really doesn't help, but since I've been doing that, I haven't had to fix another one. SO FAR.
I went for what I could afford at the time. Toyota wasn't on the list. To be honest, other than the window problems, my Hyundai has been a pretty good car. It has 144,000 miles on it, and still runs great. I do need to get a new valve cover gasket put on, (small oil leak), but that's normal maintenance stuff. Since I've learned how to do my own window repairs myself, I do a better job than the dealer, and that solved the window issue.
I have a 2008 Elantra and have NOTHING but problems with it. I've also had a problem with the window regulator and the dealership said it was a common problem. I hate them and there's nothing good about Hyundai.
Yeah, it's such a common problem, I've learned to fix the windows myself, and even posted a video on here on how to fix it yourself. (This is, of course, after the warranty replacements end). Hell, my car is 11 years old, but you're driving a 2008 and have these same issues. I'd hoped, by now, that Hyundai would have gotten their heads out of their asses. I see that hasn't happened. Next repair for you will be the CV boots. They seem to go bad every 4 years, I think that's too often.
haha looks so familiar, had this happen to my 03 tiburon, passenger side only for some reason after my warranty expired ofcourse, got a good deal on a whole entire door from a local scrapyard so thats waht i did.
I work for Hertz rent a car at LAX airport and none of our Elantra's have had this problem. We carry 500 of these...yes 500 and you know how people abuse rental cars. The ones with 40K miles on them still drive like the new ones we get with 10 miles on them...serious! Both employees and customers love this compact car. Sad that you had to go through this stress.
I'm not the only one who has had this problem. Look at the other posts on here. But I do think that Hyundai may have fixed this problem, although never admitting thaat there was a problem to begin with is what kills us who own older Hyundai's. I rent from Hertz quite often, and always request a Hyundai. However, by the time I get to the Hertz rental facility, the Hyundai's are all gone, and they stick me into some gas hog. UGH.
I wish it were that easy, but since I'm now doing this myself, I know what's happening to all of these people. The nylon guides on the regulator cable breaks, the cable goes crazy in the door, and the window falls. I'm a victim of 9 of these cheap-made regulators. I even have 2 videos here on YouTube that shows how to do the project yourself and save hundreds from the dealer's fees. Sorry about that, but the dealer here in Atlanta charged me around $300.00 LABOR to replace the last one they did.
Hey lazy comic. I work at a Hyundai dealership and I wanted to share with you that your dealership is overcharging you on labor. The labor rate for a window regulator is 1.1 hours. Unless the labor rate is $250 an hour at your dealership they are screwing you.
I thank you for that info. I had a feeling that they'd stuck it up my keester, which is why they only did this once to me. (The other 7 times, it was under warranty). The 8th time, they stuck it to me. The 9th regulator, I did myself, and even I got it done in about an hour. Now, I gotta question. I've got code PO441 on my car. It says that evap purge valve is stuck open. How hard is it for me to change this? I found it right below master cylinder. Looks easy enough? LOL
Unfortunately, some dealerships think that the general public is stupid enough not to look into these things. I'm glad that I don't work at one of these dealerships. Anyways, P0441. Most likely the purge control valve is stuck partially open or the electrical windings have gone bad. Yes it is very easy to replace.
I wish I had a dealership locally with some integrity. It sounds like yours does for sure. If your dealership was close to Atlanta, (I'm assuming it is not), I'd come to your shop. This is why I've had to get familiar enough with my car to do my own repairs, since the dealers here really suck. Thanks for the tip on P0441. I'll have to call a dealer and have them order this for me. I doubt it is stocked. Looks like it shouldn't take any longer than 15 minutes to install it. Thanks again.
I work at Hesser Hyundai in Janesville WI. I am very sorry to hear about your bad experience. My experience working with the Hyundai brand has been both pleasant and surprising. I only wish that as you've said; all the components are made by the same Korean standards. By the way, if your regulator was made in China chances are your dealership sold you a aftermarket regulator. Most likely at a Hyundai OEM price.
Yeah, Wisconsin is a bit far to drive for servicing. ROFL As for the Chinese regulator, I'm not sure if they were or not, but the way they break, I figured for sure they must be. (9 regulators on one car)? I think that's a bit excessive, especially since every car I've owned up to this point, never had even one bad regulator. The regulator that I installed personally, did have a Hyundai box, so it must be oem. (But then, I did order that from a dealer in Phoenix, Arizona).
If you do want to get something accomplished about these inferior (and, yes, they are complete crap) regulators, the person you need to speak with is your dealership's DPSM. The DPSM is the direct connection between the dealership network and the Hyundai carmaker. They are the people that will help you with legitimate issues such as yours. They can provide compensation for parts and labor being charged and capable of looking into unfair business practices like charging 3X too much labor.
I'm not too sure if Hyundai is very willing to do anything about this window problem. I've spoken with Hyundai America corporates myself, and they, in so many words, told me to get bent, and that they have NO problems with their windows. After arguing with them, that was when I did the video on YouTube.
Well. Hearing what you went through, I have to say, I would be bashing Hyundai just as hard as you. Kudos for not just taking it. Best of luck to you.
i have a 2006 one, and its got a shaking steering problem. Was wrecked and supposedly fixed, new tires, endless balancing, align, and it still shakes and rattles going fast(60-80). It's under extended warranty so I need to take it in. All in all, it's never broken down, but still, I don't like it. Most uncomfortable car. Won't buy another one for damn sure
Mine was doing the same thing, on 2 different occasions. Check the front drive axles/boots. They may have been damaged. The 2nd time, (and this one is really hard to believe), it was the spark plugs & wires. Both wires & plugs needed replaced, and it solved the problem. But in both cases, the speeds were 60 - 80 mph. With the plug & wire problem, there was slight vibration at 55 mph, and got worse as I went faster. Check into each of these.
Hello...who would actually initiate a class action law suit against Hyundai and how do we start one? Also you were saying that they are offering $2000 for your Hyundai. Is that a trade in value for the car?
Starting a class action suit involves finding an attorney that will take the case. There is a woman from Washington state that is trying to do this right now. She has posted comments on here, so look onto this video from time to time to see what her progress is. As for the $2000.00 thing with Hyunda, that was a rebate thing they were running when I made the video. That has since, expired. They're not doing that right now.
Thanks for your reply. It is truly shocking that Hyundai is not event taking all these videos, blogs, comments of the public seriously and being so indifferent. They should pay and should pay dearly for their indifference. Appreciate everything that you have done and that are doing. Great work!!!
i will never buy one again-i have a 2008 elantra they lie about the warrntay and won,t fix them .i have had engine, ac ,running prbelms and the car will die going down the road. the bbb was no help.hyundai will burn in hell.i will never buy from them again .dealer was assholes they lie .when you see a hyundai dealership run like HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ouch. Mine is starting to bite me in the ass, non-stop. All of the ''air pollution'' junk is going bad now. I no sooner get the check engine light out, (after paying hundreds of dollars I don't have), and the damned thing is back on again. Korean job security. I wish we had that in this country.
I don't know. What do you mean by newer? I've had folks as late as 2004 complain about the windows. Maybe they hired a new manufacturer in China and fired the old folks, Doo-Wong. (Couldn't help myself). Ha ha.
1999-2005 I beleive were the same model year...or even 06...I also beleive that this was based off of the KIA RIO witch was based off of the Ford Aspire..In 1998 KIA merdged with Hyundai (but they were owned by ford until 2003)..
Thanks for the update on this. Now, if I could just figure out where my car is now leaking oil. Not a bad leak, but still, want to get it fixed. I had the valve cover gasket replaced a couple of months ago. Oddly, the leak started right after I had that work done. I wonder if the boobs put it on correctly? Ha ha.
I have a 2000 Elantra, and the regulator just broke (first one), and we are replacing ourselves, thanks to finding your video. It would be helpful to see the actual re-installation process, thanks. Found for $45 without motor at Advance Auto.
I find that many car dealers and bodyshops in the USA do not treat customers fairly - even in case of premium brands -. I was upset by them many times. I thought of law suit, but I did not have time and energy. In your case, the Hyundai shop manager should apologize to you, but what they did was the opposite.
Yes, and the sad part is, all of the Hyundai dealers around here treat you like trash. I suppose it's the American way of doing business these days. I don't understand this way of thinking.
I don't even have an issue with the parts being a little more money, but when you have to replace the SAME part over and over again, THAT, I do have an issue with. I think that is just common sense.
We also have problems with our 2000 Elantra windows. Only one hasn't broken yet. We just got one fixed. My husband had to keep the windows up with shims and disconnect the power supply in case it was hit accidently. It was like a sauna in there even during early spring in Chicago.
We hope to buy another car soon, we'll keep this in mind when deciding which one to buy. Thanks for posting this video!
Thanks for the comment, and your input. Yes, the windows on the new ones have gotten no better, so buyer beware, as they say. Isn't it crazy, but every time I put my windows down, I get a queezy feeling in my stomach, as to say, is this going to be that magical time when it breaks? I shouldn't say that, because it will probably happen now, and being I'm unemployed, I sure can't afford it, even doing it myself. Ya may wanna keep the car & fix those windows yourself. Something to think about.
I agree. There should be a recal (by law) when a car have repeated problem.
But some car are even beyond recal. My father bought new Kia Pregio. Within warranty they had to replace - whole engine, 3 radios and fix power steering.
Soon after warranty it stared to rust, generator and starer motor had to be replaced. The only thing that still works ok is the gearbox..so far.
I bought new Corolla 9 years ego and not even a screw went wrong with it yet. But when it does, it'll cost a bundle.
Yeah, ain't it great? You'd think I worked for G.M. or Chrysler from the sound of it. Ha ha ha. The only problem is, I wouldn't own an American car either. I owned two Fords & both had major electrical problems. (My truck caught fire... electrical of course). Had some G.M. vehicles that rusted so bad that my front seat went thru the floor. And I would never even consider a Chrysler product. The Hyunda runs great, just those damned window regulators.
Man, I can't afford a BMW. My ass gets paid by the Yen, so I gotta drive Korean. Hey, at least I'm not driving a Chinese car. (Ya gotta watch my video about garbage made in China to know what I'm talking about on this one).
First, it's a 1999 Elantra. And as I said, the car runs great. WINDOW PROBLEMS. You'll have your's too with them.... EVENTUALLY. Mine didn't die right after I bought the car. It waited a couple of years. And there are way too many complaints from newer Hyundai owners still complaining about THEIR WINDOWS.
Jim, thanks for the tip on Lemon Aid. I will check that out. It has been almost a year since my last regulator died, so it is almost time. (Average is about one per year, but you never know which window will go bad on you). Thanks again. As for your dad's car, it is too new right now. My first regulator went when the car was 2 years old, so your dad has time left. (Hyundai hasn't improved anything in that department, unfortunately).
Sounds like a cheap part they need to source from someone in Japan. I think a class auction suit would be a good idea as this is a safety issue. Chrysler had to replace the head gasket on my dads 98 Breeze because I found the bulletin about it on Lemon Aid. They never issued a recall on it and they knew about it. My dad paid nothing in the end. My dad has an 08 Elantra now, it's been very good. Windows go up and down. Good luck with your class auction suit.
yep just bought a 2000 and I knew the rear driverside window didnt work when I bought it. I didnt worry about it because I had a bucik that I just bought regulators for and they where only $45. Now you can buy a pair of front regs for $93 for the hyundai but for the rear they want $200 to $400 EACH! and now the other rear window broke and I have only had the car 2 days. Btw we figured out why the first window wouldn't go down...its because it had a 2x4 holding it up rather than a regulator.
As for the rear regulators, try some local parts stores. Many can get them, and they are a LOT cheaper than what the stooges at Hyundai want. A 2x4 holding up the window? Now that's original. Hell, I used some CPVC pipe, but that was only temporary until I got the new regulator in my hand, then it was fixed the right way. Now I'm having issues with the check engine lite. My mechanic said the O2 sensor was bad. Replaced, & it's still coming on. Off to see him later on today AGAIN.
Overpowering? Yeah, I hooked up 220 volts to the system to watch the windows go up and down at warp-speed. There are only 2 types of people that own Hyundai's. Those that have HAD window problems, and those that WILL have window problems.
This will really fry your ass. It's because Hyundai says, and I quote, "There is nothing wrong with our windows". In other words, they don't give a shit about you once they have your ka-ching in their pockets.
The Tiburon's have the same problem. The last time I was at the Hundai dealer, a guy had just bought a new Tiburon for his daughter. You're not going to believe this, but the driver side window broke before the guy left the parking lot. He immediately had to turn around and go and have the window fixed. At least, it was under warranty. The car had like 5 miles on it. The guy was pretty pissed. As I told him about my car's windows, he got even more pissed. Who can blame him.
Since YouTube won't let me post in reply to the lastest comment, Hyundai's customer service still sucks. They've got your cash. Case closed. As they told me on the phone, "We're sorry about your window problems, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with our windows". FREAKIN' LIARS.
As far as my knowledge is right, the Hyudnai Elantra (before facelift models) had serious problems with malfunctions (in my case, I had A/C problem in summer, imagine that)
I hope Hyundai would provide with more good services (now they are but well...) with their cars. By the way, I hope you solved this problem.
whats the year on your elantra? i bought my 01 elantra in march of 2008 with 96,000 miles on it... there's only one problem with it and thats the fact that i can't roll my passenger rear window down with my switches on the driver door handle. other than that everything works great i love my car.
I love my car too, except for the windows. Your rear window regulator may already be broke, and somebody may have disconnected the wire from the switch. See if it goes down with the switch in the rear door, where the window is. If it does, then the regulator is fine. Then, I would suspect the switch for that particular window in your driver's front door. At least it's a start in the trouble-shooting department. Hope this helps.
My Elantra is a 1999 model. First regulator went bad in 2001. On average, one per year to be replaced. I'm guessing... that you must be having problems with your windows?
Should you be worried? Not for another year or so. Mine was about 2 years old when the first regulator went. Then, it's about 1 per year. They say they've "improved" the design, but I see folks on here who have 2006 models, and say their regualtor died. Never put your windows down and you'll be fine. (Not meaning to be a smart-ass, but it's the truth).
Okay... I can wrap up both of the latest postings on this in one reply. You just can't use another window regulator. It's not like one-size-fits-all. Guys... thanks for the suggestion, but I already looked into that. Other regulators don't bolt up the same way, don't run the cables and guides the same way, etc. Ya wanna know what the best regulator is? It's the one you installed yourself, 'cause you'll do a way better job than the garage, 'cause they don't give a shit. Just want your cold cash.
hmmm. sounds like a sh1t of a problem. you should try the regulators from the rd tiburon/coupe. it is based on the same platform. personally, i have had an excel, lantra (same as yours) and an accent and they have been of top quality. i am guessing your warranty has expired so you won't have a problem trying the other regulators. its a shame about your problems with your local service reps. but definitely give the tiburon regulators a go.
Yeah... I thought it was bad when stuff was outsourced to Japan... then Korea... and now China. The Chinese crap is by far, the worst. Where are the corporates gonna go next that will be even cheaper than China? (Do we REALLY wanna know the answer to that)? I say, if your business is based in America, then your business should manufacture here. And the crap made in China isn't any cheaper, so where's all that money going? CORPORATE POCKETS.
Wow. I'm sorry to see that you've had such a problem with your car and Hyundai. I have a 2004 Elantra and haven't had a single problem with it. I hope it stays that way. Good luck and keep us updated.
My cousin owns a 2006 Elantra Sedan with about 41000 miles. He has replaced 16 of these regulators, twice on the driver, 5 on the rear driver, 3 on the front passenger, and 6 on the rear passenger.
And I thought my Hundai was bad on these regulators. WOW !!! And it's a fairly new car, only 2 years old. My first one died after 1 year of owning the car. Unless he has high miles, it should be covered under the Hyundai warranty, but it's still a pain the ass to have to continually go hang out at the dealership for the repair for hours on end. Tell your cousin to spread the word about Hyundai's "don't give a crap" attitude on this ongoing problem. We all need to get the word out. I'm doing it.
I have a 2000 Hyundai Elantra that was bought for me recently. It's a used car and the left rear window is stuck shut. A few days ago I went out to see that the window had slid down and had to manually force it back up. It's shut, for now. Help?
It will continue to fall. You've got two choices. Spend a hundred bucks & fix it yourself. (The dealer will nail you for the fix at the tune of $400.00 for the repair). Or is ya wanna get really cheap on just keeping it up, you can always silicone it shut, but keep in mind... that the window will be permanently shut forever upon doing that.
Yup.. I've got a 2000 Elantra, rear left window regulator went out in 2006. Thankfully it's been the only one so far, but it's the exact same thing - window won't stay up. I keep it rigged up by sticking several pieces of paper down between the door and the window, but I have to re-do it every week or so to keep it up. Can't count the number of times my interior's been rained on, since it falls at random intervals. What were you saying about Hyundai giving $2k?
The $2,000.00 is the cash back program that Hyundai was offering at the time the video was shot. I haven't seen that commercial for a while so I'm guessing it's not longer offered. What I said was, if you buy a new Hyundai, take theat 2 grand and bank it for future window regulator replacements.
Man, that sucks. Hyundai must have fixed this problem with the 2001 Elantra redesign. I have owned a 2002 Elantra for 5 years now (bought it used when it was about a year old) and have not had a single window failure, nor have I seen people complaining online about window failures that own the 2001-2006 model. Actually, it's been the most reliable car I've ever owned (including a 2002 Honda). But "yes" the dealership service is extremely poor everywhere I've taken it -- a major downfall.
Well, Hyundai hasn't totally fixed the problem. I'm now hearing complaints on the windows in models as late as 2006. Remember, Hyundai & Kia are the same car company, so beware.
If I could get a job in Colorado, (one that pays a liveable wage anyway)... I'd be there tomorrow. I actually tried for a few jobs in the Denver area, but... never heard anything back.
Yes... I live in fear everytime I touch my windows. (After 9 window regualtors, can ya blame me)? I've got a video coming. (I made it myself). It is how to correctly fix these on your own. You can save hundreds of dollars by doing it yourself. Keep your eyes on TheLazyComic channel for the video. I hope to have it up within the week. Thanks for your input. I sure wish the morons at Hyundai would actually pay attention to all the bad press I'm trying to give on this problem.
I replied to this comment days ago. Why it didn't post, only YouTube knows for sure. Anyway, get an ohmeter and check your switch. If the switch checks out ok, then apply 12 volts DC to your motor and see if it turns. If it does, the window regulator itself is bad. This is not a hard job. Try to fix it yourself. You'll save yourself hundreds of dollars in the process. The time it takes to drive & sit at the garage, U can have it done in your driveway. If U can turn a wrench/screwdriver, your in.
I used to lower the windows a little under the hot sun, before the car is filled with A/C air. Now, I would rather spend more on the gas bill, then replacing the regulators. Damn!
Suction cups work well to on the inside of the window, but they are REAL temporary. I keep them in the car, only because if the window regulator breaks on the road, you won't be able to tear the inside panel of the door off. If it breaks while on the road, pull over and jimmy the window back up. Sometimes it takes playing with the switch to get the motor to realease the cable so you can pull the window back up with your fingers. At that point, wet the suction cups & stick em on the window bottom
Thanks for your input on this, and yes, your window regulators were probably made in China too. I've got the regulator coming and am planning on shooting a video of the installation process so that you can fix the problem yourself. I am investigating on which agency to complain to on this so that Hyundai will have to answer to these problems. Not acceptable.
My FL regulator also broke recently. It is the steel cable giving up. The cable assembly is weilded metal, not serviceable. Hyundai can get it from China for pennies and I have to pay $60 US dollars to get it from ebay and a lot of dirty hours under hot sun. Hyundai is reponsible for selecting and testing it before using it. Thanks for the video. Hyundai is cheap!!
I just replaced my regulator yesterday and shot more video of the process. As soon as I get it produced, I'll be posting it on YouTube. The "real" way to fix the window regulator. (Not like Wal-Mart Dot's idea with the string to pull it up and down). Keep your eyes located on my channel, TheLazyComic as I'll be posting that video within the next week. Thanks for the input. And yes, Hyundai is not only cheap, they just suck because they just don't care.

If there is a class action suit- I WANT IN!
albanystock 3 months ago
@albanystock If there is a class action for these crummy windows, I want in too. To my knowledge, nobody cares. You checked out this video. I have 2 others posted on here. Both show you how to do the job yourself, and can save you a bundle. The job takes about an hour, and yes, you CAN do it. (God help me, I sound like O'Bama). LOL If they are still under warranty, you're at the mercy of the dealer doing the job. When warranty runs out, get new ones from 1-A Auto on line. $48.00, (American),
thelazycomic 3 months ago
you have convinced me!
businesses have no clue how far customer service get them!
that is why mac is doing so well, their products are overpriced and hyped up... but they keep a ton of customers by just simply talking to them and offering solutions if you have a defect (or dropped it).
will8675 7 months ago
@will8675 Thanks for your input... and oddly enough... or maybe not so odd... I just had to replace window regulator #11. Lucky for me, I found a place online that sells after market types. $47.00 for a new one and that included shipping. I installed it and it works great, for now. However... now my window is having a tracking issue where it's all wobbley going up, and tries to go off the track. I even took this to a body shop, and they shrugged their shoulders.

I have an Elantra and it is ridiculous how CRAPPY it is for the price I paid!!!!
jessiebean100 9 months ago
@jessiebean100 I feel your pain. Now, I have to use a pair of needle-nosed pliers to change the heat setting in the car. The knob fell off of the dashboard, and I can't get the damned thing back on. So now, I gotta stop the car, put the pliers on the shaft for the knob, and turn it. I know it's not big deal, but it is annoying as all hell.

The Video Response i posted was showing you how the JB weld held up. That crap is hard as a rock man its not going anywere so if that stuff you got doesnt work use the jb weld. however the window still moves LOL so idk.
jrpg10389 11 months ago
@jrpg10389 How do I watch the video response ?? I wanna see it... really.
thelazycomic 11 months ago
lol Im not sure if i mentioned before but ive also had to replace BOTH of my drive shafts passenger and driver side. Also BOTH of my Wheel bearings in the front as well. Im like ok what else can go wrong... just kinda wait for somthing else to break LOL.
jrpg10389 11 months ago
@jrpg10389 Don't ever ask the "what next" question. You'll get bit in the ass, and that is with everything in life, not just the car. Right now, I need a new front strut and and an engine mount. I will try to do both myself. What's the worst that could happen. The spring on the strut kill me ?? I'm not that lucky.
thelazycomic 11 months ago
LOL thats what happened to me I was driving my 2000 elantra and i went to roll up the back window, i heard a snap and then smack looked back and my window fell all the way into the door. That was the second time. Right now Im on my third regulator(drivers side front). Probably gonna DIY this one instead of the shop. Other than that tho its a great car never had any serious problems just typical repairs other than CV joints. that was costly
beHaR 1 year ago
CV Joints ?? Never had to replace those yet... I don't think. Do the joints come with the whole new front axel ?? If so, then I have... TWICE. My CV boots on my front axels have torn twice. Both times, I had the entire axel replaced. It's actually cheaper to get it done that way, if youcan't do the job yourself. (Some repairs I'll tackle... but if it's something where the wheel can fall off... I'll let a pro do it). LOL
thelazycomic 1 year ago
@thelazycomic Yes they do the joints are part of the axel. So when, like you said, the boot tears and joint get screwed up, you just replace the whole axel cause its cheaper. And thank you for your videos they were a BIG help, i had no idea what I was looking at when i took the panel off. I also found that (ohh what a surprise!) mine broke in the same two places as yours.
beHaR 1 year ago
BTW... don't know if you've ever changed your own window regulator, but I also have two vids on YouTube on how to do the job yourself. One is dis-assembly... the other is istallation. Those vids have helped lots of folks do the job themselves. Just thought you may need them to help you out.
thelazycomic 1 year ago
Your not kidding man i have a 2000 hyundai elantra that i have replaced all 4 window regulators on. I Got the regulators for 30 dollars a piece and i just tell people to leave my windows alone LOL. And im not trolling "thelazycomic" but the correct way to say hyundai is Hun day. =)
jrpg10389 11 months ago
Funny on the Hun-day thing. It's that damned Y in there that gets me. I try to pronounce it too. So it comes out like HYON-DAY. Do I look Korean? ROFL. Maybe I shouldn't ask that. My dad did serve in the Korean War.
thelazycomic 11 months ago
@thelazycomic
Lol id say its wayy to late to get that but eh i never heard anything about it.
jrpg10389 11 months ago
Okay, latest development on the windows. I am now having the same problem. Here it is. The PLASTIC clips that attach to the windows. These are what the window regulator actually screw on to. They crack. Not the regulator, but the attaching clips that glue to the window. Right now, I have the internal panel off of my door so that I can "help" the window be guided up. These windows simply suck. I've never seen anything like it. I've tried gluing that part, but it's made from some weird plastic.
thelazycomic 11 months ago
@thelazycomic
I Tried using JB weld loll and that didnt hold up im gonna try and clean the clips out the best i can and try some crazy combo of glue and jb weld or something and leave it alone for a week or so.
jrpg10389 11 months ago
@jrpg10389 Let me know how that works for you. I bought some kind of "super glue" stuff at Radio Shack that is supposed to glue ANYTHING. (Yeah, like I haven't heard that line before). I bought it, but haven't tried it yet. (Too cold right now). I told the guy at Radio Shack if it didn't work, I was bringing it back. We shall see.
thelazycomic 11 months ago
@thelazycomic
LOL ill let ya know how that works, "offtopic" I saw in one of your videos your living in a storage shed? Holy shit that damn hyundai done bled ya dry? LOL Ive been busy lately mothers in the hospital and the weathers been bad so i havnt messed with the car at all, however its a nice day today and i may see about fixing that damned window AGAIN its embarassing trying to hold the window still as i roll it up hoping the regulator doesnt bind up and that plastic snap inside of there
jrpg10389 11 months ago
@jrpg10389 On the "off topic" comment, it wasn't the Hyundai that bled me dry, it was this lousy Untied States economy. The only thing more rare than jobs out there is O'Dick'as birth certificate. Damned, this country needs a good leader. Wish we had SOMEBODY who could do the job, but these boobs we get. One right after another. I made a joke after the current boob got into the House of No Hope that we'd be looking back at the Bush years as good times. I was joking... but then ??
thelazycomic 11 months ago
I have a 2000 hyundai elantra which is the same as the 99. I have replaced all 4 window regulators and just decided to spend 30 dollars a piece on them at a pay and pull pulling them out of totalled hyundai's the problem was finding one they had that actually had the regulators in it i figured it was a common problem seeing as it took me a couple months to find one there because they were always taken lol.
jrpg10389 11 months ago
I was kind of afraid to buy a used window regulator from a scrap yard. I figured, even if you could find one, who knew how much life would be left on it, so I opted for a new one from Hyundai. I can think of better things to do than keep replacing these things over and over again. Another key to making them last. Don't put the windows completely down. I keep them up a couple of inches. Maybe it really doesn't help, but since I've been doing that, I haven't had to fix another one. SO FAR.
thelazycomic 11 months ago
toyota for life!!!!
etoyotarockshsucks 1 year ago
I went for what I could afford at the time. Toyota wasn't on the list. To be honest, other than the window problems, my Hyundai has been a pretty good car. It has 144,000 miles on it, and still runs great. I do need to get a new valve cover gasket put on, (small oil leak), but that's normal maintenance stuff. Since I've learned how to do my own window repairs myself, I do a better job than the dealer, and that solved the window issue.
thelazycomic 1 year ago
I have a 2008 Elantra and have NOTHING but problems with it. I've also had a problem with the window regulator and the dealership said it was a common problem. I hate them and there's nothing good about Hyundai.
guitarplayer5150 1 year ago
Yeah, it's such a common problem, I've learned to fix the windows myself, and even posted a video on here on how to fix it yourself. (This is, of course, after the warranty replacements end). Hell, my car is 11 years old, but you're driving a 2008 and have these same issues. I'd hoped, by now, that Hyundai would have gotten their heads out of their asses. I see that hasn't happened. Next repair for you will be the CV boots. They seem to go bad every 4 years, I think that's too often.
thelazycomic 1 year ago
haha looks so familiar, had this happen to my 03 tiburon, passenger side only for some reason after my warranty expired ofcourse, got a good deal on a whole entire door from a local scrapyard so thats waht i did.
teebrron 1 year ago
I work for Hertz rent a car at LAX airport and none of our Elantra's have had this problem. We carry 500 of these...yes 500 and you know how people abuse rental cars. The ones with 40K miles on them still drive like the new ones we get with 10 miles on them...serious! Both employees and customers love this compact car. Sad that you had to go through this stress.
spam91504 2 years ago 2
I'm not the only one who has had this problem. Look at the other posts on here. But I do think that Hyundai may have fixed this problem, although never admitting thaat there was a problem to begin with is what kills us who own older Hyundai's. I rent from Hertz quite often, and always request a Hyundai. However, by the time I get to the Hertz rental facility, the Hyundai's are all gone, and they stick me into some gas hog. UGH.

im a hyundai tech at a MA dealer we have had issues of the adhesive coming off the glass causing the window to fall down.
MrBawston 2 years ago
I wish it were that easy, but since I'm now doing this myself, I know what's happening to all of these people. The nylon guides on the regulator cable breaks, the cable goes crazy in the door, and the window falls. I'm a victim of 9 of these cheap-made regulators. I even have 2 videos here on YouTube that shows how to do the project yourself and save hundreds from the dealer's fees. Sorry about that, but the dealer here in Atlanta charged me around $300.00 LABOR to replace the last one they did.
thelazycomic 2 years ago
Hey lazy comic. I work at a Hyundai dealership and I wanted to share with you that your dealership is overcharging you on labor. The labor rate for a window regulator is 1.1 hours. Unless the labor rate is $250 an hour at your dealership they are screwing you.
mastertechcertified 2 years ago
I thank you for that info. I had a feeling that they'd stuck it up my keester, which is why they only did this once to me. (The other 7 times, it was under warranty). The 8th time, they stuck it to me. The 9th regulator, I did myself, and even I got it done in about an hour. Now, I gotta question. I've got code PO441 on my car. It says that evap purge valve is stuck open. How hard is it for me to change this? I found it right below master cylinder. Looks easy enough? LOL
thelazycomic 2 years ago
Unfortunately, some dealerships think that the general public is stupid enough not to look into these things. I'm glad that I don't work at one of these dealerships. Anyways, P0441. Most likely the purge control valve is stuck partially open or the electrical windings have gone bad. Yes it is very easy to replace.
mastertechcertified 2 years ago
I wish I had a dealership locally with some integrity. It sounds like yours does for sure. If your dealership was close to Atlanta, (I'm assuming it is not), I'd come to your shop. This is why I've had to get familiar enough with my car to do my own repairs, since the dealers here really suck. Thanks for the tip on P0441. I'll have to call a dealer and have them order this for me. I doubt it is stocked. Looks like it shouldn't take any longer than 15 minutes to install it. Thanks again.
thelazycomic 2 years ago
I work at Hesser Hyundai in Janesville WI. I am very sorry to hear about your bad experience. My experience working with the Hyundai brand has been both pleasant and surprising. I only wish that as you've said; all the components are made by the same Korean standards. By the way, if your regulator was made in China chances are your dealership sold you a aftermarket regulator. Most likely at a Hyundai OEM price.
mastertechcertified 2 years ago
Yeah, Wisconsin is a bit far to drive for servicing. ROFL As for the Chinese regulator, I'm not sure if they were or not, but the way they break, I figured for sure they must be. (9 regulators on one car)? I think that's a bit excessive, especially since every car I've owned up to this point, never had even one bad regulator. The regulator that I installed personally, did have a Hyundai box, so it must be oem. (But then, I did order that from a dealer in Phoenix, Arizona).
thelazycomic 2 years ago
If you do want to get something accomplished about these inferior (and, yes, they are complete crap) regulators, the person you need to speak with is your dealership's DPSM. The DPSM is the direct connection between the dealership network and the Hyundai carmaker. They are the people that will help you with legitimate issues such as yours. They can provide compensation for parts and labor being charged and capable of looking into unfair business practices like charging 3X too much labor.
mastertechcertified 2 years ago
I'm not too sure if Hyundai is very willing to do anything about this window problem. I've spoken with Hyundai America corporates myself, and they, in so many words, told me to get bent, and that they have NO problems with their windows. After arguing with them, that was when I did the video on YouTube.
thelazycomic 2 years ago
Well. Hearing what you went through, I have to say, I would be bashing Hyundai just as hard as you. Kudos for not just taking it. Best of luck to you.

also something broke inside the door of the driver side, luckily the window still works just makes a weird noise going up and down

i have a 2006 one, and its got a shaking steering problem. Was wrecked and supposedly fixed, new tires, endless balancing, align, and it still shakes and rattles going fast(60-80). It's under extended warranty so I need to take it in. All in all, it's never broken down, but still, I don't like it. Most uncomfortable car. Won't buy another one for damn sure
msj19706677 2 years ago

Is that a trade in value for the car?
neshula 2 years ago
Starting a class action suit involves finding an attorney that will take the case. There is a woman from Washington state that is trying to do this right now. She has posted comments on here, so look onto this video from time to time to see what her progress is. As for the $2000.00 thing with Hyunda, that was a rebate thing they were running when I made the video. That has since, expired. They're not doing that right now.
thelazycomic 2 years ago
Thanks for your reply. It is truly shocking that Hyundai is not event taking all these videos, blogs, comments of the public seriously and being so indifferent. They should pay and should pay dearly for their indifference. Appreciate everything that you have done and that are doing. Great work!!!

I find that many car dealers and bodyshops in the USA do not treat customers fairly - even in case of premium brands -. I was upset by them many times. I thought of law suit, but I did not have time and energy. In your case, the Hyundai shop manager should apologize to you, but what they did was the opposite.
azzinny 2 years ago
Yes, and the sad part is, all of the Hyundai dealers around here treat you like trash. I suppose it's the American way of doing business these days. I don't understand this way of thinking.
thelazycomic 2 years ago
They sell cars little bit cheaper but make up for it on sells of spare parts.
odakueffect 2 years ago
I don't even have an issue with the parts being a little more money, but when you have to replace the SAME part over and over again, THAT, I do have an issue with. I think that is just common sense.
thelazycomic 2 years ago
We also have problems with our 2000 Elantra windows. Only one hasn't broken yet. We just got one fixed. My husband had to keep the windows up with shims and disconnect the power supply in case it was hit accidently. It was like a sauna in there even during early spring in Chicago.
We hope to buy another car soon, we'll keep this in mind when deciding which one to buy. Thanks for posting this video!
bermudamoongate 2 years ago
Thanks for the comment, and your input. Yes, the windows on the new ones have gotten no better, so buyer beware, as they say. Isn't it crazy, but every time I put my windows down, I get a queezy feeling in my stomach, as to say, is this going to be that magical time when it breaks? I shouldn't say that, because it will probably happen now, and being I'm unemployed, I sure can't afford it, even doing it myself. Ya may wanna keep the car & fix those windows yourself. Something to think about.
thelazycomic 2 years ago

The Hyunda runs great, just those damned window regulators.

thelazycomic 2 years ago
Sorry but Hyundai has changed a lot since your 1998 Elantra.
wjvwhw 2 years ago
First, it's a 1999 Elantra. And as I said, the car runs great. WINDOW PROBLEMS. You'll have your's too with them.... EVENTUALLY. Mine didn't die right after I bought the car. It waited a couple of years. And there are way too many complaints from newer Hyundai owners still complaining about THEIR WINDOWS.
thelazycomic 2 years ago
Jim, thanks for the tip on Lemon Aid. I will check that out. It has been almost a year since my last regulator died, so it is almost time. (Average is about one per year, but you never know which window will go bad on you). Thanks again. As for your dad's car, it is too new right now. My first regulator went when the car was 2 years old, so your dad has time left. (Hyundai hasn't improved anything in that department, unfortunately).
thelazycomic 2 years ago
Sounds like a cheap part they need to source from someone in Japan. I think a class auction suit would be a good idea as this is a safety issue. Chrysler had to replace the head gasket on my dads 98 Breeze because I found the bulletin about it on Lemon Aid. They never issued a recall on it and they knew about it. My dad paid nothing in the end. My dad has an 08 Elantra now, it's been very good. Windows go up and down. Good luck with your class auction suit.
Jim4575 2 years ago
yep just bought a 2000 and I knew the rear driverside window didnt work when I bought it. I didnt worry about it because I had a bucik that I just bought regulators for and they where only $45. Now you can buy a pair of front regs for $93 for the hyundai but for the rear they want $200 to $400 EACH! and now the other rear window broke and I have only had the car 2 days. Btw we figured out why the first window wouldn't go down...its because it had a 2x4 holding it up rather than a regulator.
fishnetting 2 years ago
As for the rear regulators, try some local parts stores. Many can get them, and they are a LOT cheaper than what the stooges at Hyundai want. A 2x4 holding up the window? Now that's original. Hell, I used some CPVC pipe, but that was only temporary until I got the new regulator in my hand, then it was fixed the right way. Now I'm having issues with the check engine lite. My mechanic said the O2 sensor was bad. Replaced, & it's still coming on. Off to see him later on today AGAIN.
thelazycomic 2 years ago
Have you EVER put the windows down? It doesn't sound like it. Maybe you're the lucky ONE?
thelazycomic 2 years ago
Overpowering? Yeah, I hooked up 220 volts to the system to watch the windows go up and down at warp-speed. There are only 2 types of people that own Hyundai's. Those that have HAD window problems, and those that WILL have window problems.
thelazycomic 2 years ago
This will really fry your ass. It's because Hyundai says, and I quote, "There is nothing wrong with our windows". In other words, they don't give a shit about you once they have your ka-ching in their pockets.
thelazycomic 2 years ago
nine window regulators?? thats terrible

Yep, but just remember, Hyundai says there's nothing wrong with them, so it must be us. HYUNDAI IS LOSERS.
thelazycomic 2 years ago
man ...... Is this for all hyundai cars too.. because I love the car (besides windows) I want to get the tiburon I hope its not the same issue
bigEsTarr 2 years ago
The Tiburon's have the same problem. The last time I was at the Hundai dealer, a guy had just bought a new Tiburon for his daughter. You're not going to believe this, but the driver side window broke before the guy left the parking lot. He immediately had to turn around and go and have the window fixed. At least, it was under warranty. The car had like 5 miles on it. The guy was pretty pissed. As I told him about my car's windows, he got even more pissed. Who can blame him.
thelazycomic 2 years ago
wtf..... I don't get it then why don't they try another companies motors for windows instead of the cheap chinese ones?
bigEsTarr 2 years ago
Since YouTube won't let me post in reply to the lastest comment, Hyundai's customer service still sucks. They've got your cash. Case closed. As they told me on the phone, "We're sorry about your window problems, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with our windows". FREAKIN' LIARS.
thelazycomic 3 years ago
As far as my knowledge is right, the Hyudnai Elantra (before facelift models) had serious problems with malfunctions (in my case, I had A/C problem in summer, imagine that)
I hope Hyundai would provide with more good services (now they are but well...) with their cars. By the way, I hope you solved this problem.

whats the year on your elantra? i bought my 01 elantra in march of 2008 with 96,000 miles on it... there's only one problem with it and thats the fact that i can't roll my passenger rear window down with my switches on the driver door handle. other than that everything works great i love my car.
quacktackular 3 years ago
I love my car too, except for the windows. Your rear window regulator may already be broke, and somebody may have disconnected the wire from the switch. See if it goes down with the switch in the rear door, where the window is. If it does, then the regulator is fine. Then, I would suspect the switch for that particular window in your driver's front door. At least it's a start in the trouble-shooting department. Hope this helps.

wht year is the elantra
thecarexpert18 3 years ago
My Elantra is a 1999 model. First regulator went bad in 2001. On average, one per year to be replaced. I'm guessing... that you must be having problems with your windows?
thelazycomic 3 years ago
i just bought a 2006 elantra, should i be worried?
btw, great information
rustyfender 3 years ago
Just get really good at doing the window repairs yourself. The rest of the car is great. Just the windows suck.
thelazycomic 3 years ago
Should you be worried? Not for another year or so. Mine was about 2 years old when the first regulator went. Then, it's about 1 per year. They say they've "improved" the design, but I see folks on here who have 2006 models, and say their regualtor died. Never put your windows down and you'll be fine. (Not meaning to be a smart-ass, but it's the truth).

Dude just buy a different window regulator one that better quality
fredzaz65 3 years ago

Hi, Excuse me sir? if i make a funny remake of this video will it offend you? Im only 13 Thank you so much :)
littlemanguile 3 years ago
hmmm. sounds like a sh1t of a problem. you should try the regulators from the rd tiburon/coupe. it is based on the same platform. personally, i have had an excel, lantra (same as yours) and an accent and they have been of top quality. i am guessing your warranty has expired so you won't have a problem trying the other regulators. its a shame about your problems with your local service reps. but definitely give the tiburon regulators a go.
knobcheese69 3 years ago
Your funny bro! Well I'll tell you, ever since the 70's, the outsourcing and such, quality has gone to hell.
HangingTree 3 years ago

Good luck and keep us updated.
blondetrumpetboy 3 years ago
Oh!!! So you're the one that Hyundai gave the "good" windows to. Don't use them much... they do tire easily.
thelazycomic 3 years ago
My cousin owns a 2006 Elantra Sedan with about 41000 miles. He has replaced 16 of these regulators, twice on the driver, 5 on the rear driver, 3 on the front passenger, and 6 on the rear passenger.
ChampionDriver01 3 years ago
And I thought my Hundai was bad on these regulators. WOW !!! And it's a fairly new car, only 2 years old. My first one died after 1 year of owning the car. Unless he has high miles, it should be covered under the Hyundai warranty, but it's still a pain the ass to have to continually go hang out at the dealership for the repair for hours on end. Tell your cousin to spread the word about Hyundai's "don't give a crap" attitude on this ongoing problem. We all need to get the word out. I'm doing it.
thelazycomic 3 years ago
Don't worry- I'll help you get the word out.

Cool... we need all the help we can get on this. THANKS.

I have a 2000 Hyundai Elantra that was bought for me recently. It's a used car and the left rear window is stuck shut. A few days ago I went out to see that the window had slid down and had to manually force it back up. It's shut, for now. Help?
MissMarieTM 3 years ago
It will continue to fall. You've got two choices. Spend a hundred bucks & fix it yourself. (The dealer will nail you for the fix at the tune of $400.00 for the repair). Or is ya wanna get really cheap on just keeping it up, you can always silicone it shut, but keep in mind... that the window will be permanently shut forever upon doing that.
thelazycomic 3 years ago
What were you saying about Hyundai giving $2k?
meganap2214 3 years ago
The $2,000.00 is the cash back program that Hyundai was offering at the time the video was shot. I haven't seen that commercial for a while so I'm guessing it's not longer offered. What I said was, if you buy a new Hyundai, take theat 2 grand and bank it for future window regulator replacements.
thelazycomic 3 years ago
Man, that sucks. Hyundai must have fixed this problem with the 2001 Elantra redesign. I have owned a 2002 Elantra for 5 years now (bought it used when it was about a year old) and have not had a single window failure, nor have I seen people complaining online about window failures that own the 2001-2006 model. Actually, it's been the most reliable car I've ever owned (including a 2002 Honda). But "yes" the dealership service is extremely poor everywhere I've taken it -- a major downfall.
breakingsoftware 3 years ago
Well, Hyundai hasn't totally fixed the problem. I'm now hearing complaints on the windows in models as late as 2006. Remember, Hyundai & Kia are the same car company, so beware.

Come to Colorado!

If I could get a job in Colorado, (one that pays a liveable wage anyway)... I'd be there tomorrow. I actually tried for a few jobs in the Denver area, but... never heard anything back.
thelazycomic 3 years ago
I sure wish the morons at Hyundai would actually pay attention to all the bad press I'm trying to give on this problem.

i have an 88 chevy, it has power windows, now the left one all of a sudden stopped working?? is this electrical or a fuse? where do i take it>?
angelicricky 3 years ago 2
I replied to this comment days ago. Why it didn't post, only YouTube knows for sure. Anyway, get an ohmeter and check your switch. If the switch checks out ok, then apply 12 volts DC to your motor and see if it turns. If it does, the window regulator itself is bad. This is not a hard job. Try to fix it yourself. You'll save yourself hundreds of dollars in the process. The time it takes to drive & sit at the garage, U can have it done in your driveway. If U can turn a wrench/screwdriver, your in.
thelazycomic 3 years ago
thanks, i fixed it already it was a loose cable on the motor thingy
angelicricky 3 years ago
I used to lower the windows a little under the hot sun, before the car is filled with A/C air. Now, I would rather spend more on the gas bill, then replacing the regulators. Damn!
windfirebird 3 years ago 3
good idea to use a PCV pipe to support it temporarily until the regulator part arrives.
windfirebird 3 years ago 2
Suction cups work well to on the inside of the window, but they are REAL temporary. I keep them in the car, only because if the window regulator breaks on the road, you won't be able to tear the inside panel of the door off. If it breaks while on the road, pull over and jimmy the window back up. Sometimes it takes playing with the switch to get the motor to realease the cable so you can pull the window back up with your fingers. At that point, wet the suction cups & stick em on the window bottom
thelazycomic 3 years ago
Thanks for your input on this, and yes, your window regulators were probably made in China too. I've got the regulator coming and am planning on shooting a video of the installation process so that you can fix the problem yourself. I am investigating on which agency to complain to on this so that Hyundai will have to answer to these problems. Not acceptable.
thelazycomic 3 years ago
My FL regulator also broke recently. It is the steel cable giving up. The cable assembly is weilded metal, not serviceable. Hyundai can get it from China for pennies and I have to pay $60 US dollars to get it from ebay and a lot of dirty hours under hot sun. Hyundai is reponsible for selecting and testing it before using it. Thanks for the video. Hyundai is cheap!!
windfirebird 3 years ago 2
I just replaced my regulator yesterday and shot more video of the process. As soon as I get it produced, I'll be posting it on YouTube. The "real" way to fix the window regulator. (Not like Wal-Mart Dot's idea with the string to pull it up and down). Keep your eyes located on my channel, TheLazyComic as I'll be posting that video within the next week. Thanks for the input. And yes, Hyundai is not only cheap, they just suck because they just don't care.
