my name is simon day i followed the red lights until they broke up , used to hang out at their house in circus street and get on their nerves , they were a good live act thats for sure , all will be revealed in my memoirs ,
hell it's great to hear & see photos of the red lights again after 30 years.use to work with this band as a tape op at a london studio & watch most of this single being recorded & mixed, i still have a copy of the singe with a rare pic sleeve sign by 3 members of the band. plus i have to own up i also got the single leaked for a review in the nme back in 1978.
I have both versions + i prefer the Roxy club version. I can't understand why on the single version the band bother to steal ATV s love lies limp riff + then stick it on the end as well...It doesnt need it!!! Also the harp on the single version nods to a future in blues or pub rock..i think the raw version at the Roxy sounds better...I would say a new wave band though, not punk...But a good tune!!!
Maybe because they used hang around with Mark Perry and Tyrone Thomas in Deptford and Greenwich, Maybe ATV stole their riff, who cares anyway, everybody robbed everybody else during the punk era and that was it to a tee. See the other Red Lights videos I have put up on You tube to hear them being a bit more pistolesque, but hey Rock and Roll buddy and a happy new year from Harry's Bar.
Well dust me down with a feather - I've still got this single. Haven't heard it in years. Bought it at the time it came out. Used to go to their gigs (and "Harry's Bar" that you mention). They all shared a house together in Greenwich for a bit. Royal Hill. Blimey, any one want to give me tons of money for it? What? No? Ok, Please yourselves.
Andrew, I saw The Red Lights play many many times, mainly because my old school mate Steve Townsend was the drummer. Great band who should have taken one of the record deals offered to them.
f**k me! I just spent the last 2 - 3 hours trying to tidy up a recording of a bashed up copy of this single with my flashy audio program and a cleaner version turns up on you tube! I also used to be in a band that covered this tune. Great song. always loved this version the best. totally different from the version on roxy 2, Nice one!
I'm getting a bit slapdash in my old age, after all it is spelt correctly on the record cover. Check out the price for the single in the Record Collector rare record price guide, you will be pleasantly surprised!
wow! I love this song so much. when I was in high school in the early 80's I had the live at the roxy vol. 2 and this was my favorite song on it. it's funny I always pictured these guys as looking like the u.k subs or johmmy moped or something, with leather jackets and chains and orange hair....it's great to see them with the suits on! totally not what I pictured them looking like! now I need to find the 45. is it ulra rare?
Yes it is! The Record Collector rare record price guide prices it at 60 pounds sterling at the moment, but as far as I know there were only 1000 pressed and not all of those were sold. Good luck in your quest.
I was in a band in the 1980s called 'The Tetleys' and we covered this song - the crowds ALWAYS loved it! We heard it on a live punk album (think it was either live from The Roxy or The Vortex)
Hi, Yes that's true it was the Roxy actually and the live version is excellent. When they played South London venues they had people singing along to it. I have put up a new Red Lights video today featuring a previously unreleased demo of a punk rock song called Nothing Else To Do.
Once again that is very true, I met Dave McMullan a few times before he went off on his travels and he was a great bloke but I never saw him perform with the band. Sadly he is no longer alive and I don't have any pictures of him either. I am putting together a slide show of the Red Lights at the Albany Empire and that should be up soon.
You are quite right, unfortunately I never met him and so didn't take any photos of him, but I have seen one of him on a punk fan site on the web somewhere.
I'm Steve Townsend's cousin! My older brother has the single, I remember the track well, heard it played lots when I was little!

I can't say I recall being so skinny but there you go.
Who would have thought in 1977 that your own past would be recorded and broadcast on a worldwide web?
