1) Tom Riddle is Voldermort, But Voldermort britty much died when he tryed to kill Harry Potter and failed

2) He then had to find a way to survive, in terms on Professer Quirrels Head (I'm guessing Quirrel was bewitched)

3) Professer Quirrel kinda disintergrated so Voldermort Spirit Flys away

4) In the Goblet of fire you see Voldermort as a baby kida thing. Then wormtail brings him back

Now yes, he could carry himself (or even the Stone, if you think about it) but... several person believe this was a test for Harry, a large set-up (including the meeting with Voldemort) by Dumbledore, a preparation for the futur. Albus (with Snape) knew Quirrell was trying to steal the Stone...
