The tuning pins are square, and I measure them at about 4 mm across. I experimented with my husband's hexagonal socket wrenches, and it looks like a 3/16-inch one would do in a pinch. I think the tuning wrench I have is pretty standard. I have several instruments (harp, zither, dulcimer, psaltry) and the wrenches seem to be interchangeable. Try a local music store, or google harp tuning wrench. Looks like "escapadedirect" has a cheap one.
@KarenSDR I think you can get tuner wrenches for a kantele. Mine come from lovikka in finland but I am sure they an mail them to you.- lovikka.com/eng/piccolo.html tuningkey (to 5 mm pegs, same as other small kanteles). 15,00 eur There are also a number of kantele firms in the USA. Google to the rescue!

Hi, gitarmats. Yes, those are the tuning pegs. It will help if you have a tuning key. That's a special wrench that's made for that kind of peg. It took a lot of courage for me to tune the strings up more than an octave, but that's what was needed. You might want to take your celestaphone to a music repair shop and ask their advice if you're worried. They could probably sell you the tuning key. Good luck!
Oh, and I'm sure any music shop would have strings that would work. I replaced one of the broken strings with a banjo string.

The notes are printed by the strings, which also helped with tuning it :-) I suspect the chords should be strummed with a pick.

Wow! How did you even figure out how to play it?

Very interesting. That sounds somewhat like a hammer dulcimer, except it involves two different actions with plucking the strings.

Hey, Karen: Sounds beautiful! What kind of tuning pins does your Celestaphone have (shape, size) and what kind of tuning wrench do you use?
I've just purchased a Marxophone and I'm thinking I might be able to use what you use to tune it - the tuning pins look very similar.
Thank you!

Hello, we have had a celestaphone in our house for as long as I have lived and I want to play it, but I am not quite sure how to tune it.
Am I just supposed to turn the pegs at the top where the strings are attatched?
I've tried it a little bit, but they seem to be stuck there so I don't want to risk breaking anything.
