i totally agree!! that looks exhilarating. seems to me...less you take a real hard fall...the chances of serious injury are relatively minimal. besides...you'll never have any bleeding fun if you're always afraid of getting hurt.

You know in medieval reconstitution blunt arrows are permited to be shot because they're relatively light. Meanwhile javelins are still not allowed because they can still severely injure a guy. Especially when you're mounted and galloping. All "estoc" like sword tips or spears are blunted and are not recommended to be used as a tactical movement unless it's safe. So unless you throw a "balsa" spear which get blown away by the wind have fun: because I guess you won't.

These guys are from someplace in Nusa Tenggara Timur (the islands east of Bali, for example flores, sumbawa, etc.) In the past these guys used real spears, and the blood shed from the ritual used to appease spirits. Nowadays the Indonesian government says they can't use actual spears, but folks still get hurt, and in a few cases die during this ceremony.

747t, the reason I found this video stupid is because of the foolish risk they are taking in throwing spears at each other. If they're sharp enough, it could kill someone, or gouge an eye out. Also, that man at 1:14, saying "if somethig happens...it was meant to happen." That's rediculous to me, because we all have agency, to choose what we will or won't do. So, when certain bad things happen to us..like say getting hurt in such a risky game...it's only our fault, not destiny. That's all.

Their are not proving their manhood, they are re-enacting a war, that is a social crisis, as in any religious ritual. Highlanders vs lowlanders... a classical figure you can find in many places.
