@Fx4Ranger2002 These have 340 hp and 455 lb·ft of torque the previous H/D motor was a 7.4 making 290 hp and 410 lb·ft of torque. Not impressive numbers from such a large engine. I will say tho, we have a 02 Ford E-450 Powerstroke and it isn't much better I think 215 hp and 425 lb·ft of torque. Weak motor.imo
@640101vh New 2011 Ford F-150s come optional with an ecoboost 3.5 liter v6 which puts out 365 horsepower and 420ft lbs of torque. It also has a towing capacity of 11300lbs which has been proven. E series vans from Ford are crap anyways...most industrial vans have junky motors for their size. But I would suggest an ecoboost f-150 for ya...its a v6 but it blows that big 8.1 liter that gets 2 mpg out of the water with more hp/torque and 23mpg.
@Fx4Ranger2002 You do realise that any vehicle going full throttle will have single digit fuel economy. holding a steady throttle in high gear is where you get the numbers that the EPA reports. If you drive your beloved ecoboost like a maniac you will still get terrible mileage.
At least try to sound moderately intelligent if you're going to post. While the 8.1 isn't going to get good fuel economy by any stretch of the imagination, you can't compare fuel economy under full acceleration vs. highway. Any motor will be in single digits under full throttle acceleration.

@Fx4Ranger2002 Think about the technology used on the Ecoboost vs. the 8.1. In 03, this was more powerful than any other motor Ford had to offer, other than their god-awful V-10. Not to mention, the Vortec is probably a lot more reliable in the long run than the Ecoboost. One camshaft vs. four, naturally-aspirated vs. twin turbos, Allison (yes they used an Allison in this truck) transmission and heavy duty transaxles vs. standard 6 speed that Ford uses in all their other trucks. @MTenery14 funny thing you bring up vortecs. My cousin has a zr2 blazer with a 4.3 vortec with 90k miles. The trucks falling apart inside and out, the gaskets leak oil, you have to tap the transfer case with a hammer to get the 4x4 to work. It gets an amazing 14mpg and has no power. Ive had to pull that heap out of the mud with my Ranger 4.0 several times. Not to mention it handles like shit. My 4.0 Ranger has double the miles, yet looks, rides, runs new

It outdoes the 4.3 vortec. 2002 is the year Ford beefed up the 4.0, and removed the 2.5, beefed up the 3.0 and the 2.3 for Ranger. I like to pick but at the end of the day its all about how well you take care of your vehicle. Mine looks showroom new when I clean it up exept for the dent in the passenger door from a deer.

Toyota motors have pretty much always been reliable. But yeah, blazers and s10s weren't anything to be proud.

@7150285 Mo it will not, Gasser may have a Bigger Engine but the Furamax has a Short Stroke High Compression engine Which is a Diesel and plus they come Turbo Charged so The Duramax will take it in a Heart beat.
it took a while for the instant economy to go from 0 mpg, to 1 mpg, to a whopping two mpg! Those are GREAT motors, but flooring the gas pedal is akin to flushing a toilet! I can just imagine the vortex forming in the fuel tank as that 496 cubic inch beast demands fuel! The economy went to double digits the INSTANT the throttle was backed off. @melvineo10 The 6.0L vortec engine produces 300- 320 hp, and this engine has been used in some of the Corvettes. Its made of iron/aliminium. The 99 and 2000 models had cast iron heads. Personally I am not a fan of this engine, even it feels easier and quicker than the 8.1. The vortec 8.1L engine is the biggest vortec engine ever made. In the beggining GM used these engines in RVs. The engine produces peak horsepower and torque at lower RPMs and maintains a flatter torque curve.
@MrBensfarm This gives you more power faster and longer. So you can climb hills etc etc. The engine uses 3.5 percent less fuel than the 6.0L - and doesn't work as hard. This means big fuel savings and a longer-lasting engine. A friend of mine chipped his 8.1 from 340 hp to about 530 hp!. You punch it, it launches! So the 8.1 can handle a lot more than people might think.
@MrBensfarm The 6.0 used in the Vette and Goat were not the same as seen in the trucks. Trucks had Iron/Aluminum, LQ4 and LQ9, however the Vette and Goat had the LS2 which is all aluminum. Besides the placement of a couple of sensors, the biggest difference was the heads. The LQ9, Higher output version of the truck 6.0, had heads that resembled the LS6 heads with larger combustion chambers. The LS2 had smaller combustion chambers making higher compression ratio. Also, the LS2 had a bigger cam.

@MrBensfarm Sorry bud I didn't mean to make you feel stupid. However, you can't chip the newer vehicles either. You can tune them however. Also, you should know that going from 340hp to 500+ with just a chip/tune on an 8.1 is impossible. You would need to swap cams, add headers, new intake manifold, and maybe a bit more compression. 200hp just off a tune won't do it. I would think being a mech for 17 years would teach you at least that much.

I just read most of the comments here and now that its 2011, and the 8.1 has been gone for a few years now, I get amusement that the new Ford 3.5 Twin Turbo makes more horsepower than the 8.1 and almost as much torque (365hp, 420ft/lbs). Its crazy how times are changing. I'm GM ASEP, I'll agree a chevy motor will run forever, but they are all so damn leaky. I used to own nothing but Chevys, but I have turned to Ford. I like fords styling and they don't leak oil like 98% of all GM products
@tinylightshow It won't leak if you take care of it... I've got a 5.3 w/ 157k that doesn't use a drop of oil, my mom has a 3.6L monte carlo with 76k that doesn't use any. My dad has an 8.1L @ 34k, and 4.8 @ 26k, and his old truck, a 5.3 @ 235k, none use/used any oil.
I greatly appreciate the towing power of those engines, theyre incredible...but damn those things have no acceleration and they barely even rev...if I had use for a big truck like that I'd buy it hands down, but where I live (in the city) I much prefer to have something with great acceleration and decent top speed...

it took a while for the instant economy to go from 0 mpg, to 1 mpg, to a whopping two mpg! Those are GREAT motors, but flooring the gas pedal is akin to flushing a toilet! I can just imagine the vortex forming in the fuel tank as that 496 cubic inch beast demands fuel! The economy went to double digits the INSTANT the throttle was backed off. Awesome video, thanks for making it.

@melvineo10 Well.. I might say 8.1 would be necessary if you are haulin a four-ton trailer. I hauled a four-ton trailer with my 6.2 litre which only has 160 hp. So 8.1 is not really necessary, I see your point. But they are really good work trucks. Problaby not necessary and that economic as a family car.

@melvineo10 The 6.0L vortec engine produces 300- 320 hp, and this engine has been used in some of the Corvettes. Its made of iron/aliminium. The 99 and 2000 models had cast iron heads. Personally I am not a fan of this engine, even it feels easier and quicker than the 8.1. The vortec 8.1L engine is the biggest vortec engine ever made. In the beggining GM used these engines in RVs. The engine produces peak horsepower and torque at lower RPMs and maintains a flatter torque curve.

@MrBensfarm This gives you more power faster and longer. So you can climb hills etc etc. The engine uses 3.5 percent less fuel than the 6.0L - and doesn't work as hard. This means big fuel savings and a longer-lasting engine. A friend of mine chipped his 8.1 from 340 hp to about 530 hp!. You punch it, it launches! So the 8.1 can handle a lot more than people might think.

@MrBensfarm The 6.0 used in the Vette and Goat were not the same as seen in the trucks. Trucks had Iron/Aluminum, LQ4 and LQ9, however the Vette and Goat had the LS2 which is all aluminum. Besides the placement of a couple of sensors, the biggest difference was the heads. The LQ9, Higher output version of the truck 6.0, had heads that resembled the LS6 heads with larger combustion chambers. The LS2 had smaller combustion chambers making higher compression ratio. Also, the LS2 had a bigger cam.

@MrBensfarm Sorry bud I didn't mean to make you feel stupid. However, you can't chip the newer vehicles either. You can tune them however. Also, you should know that going from 340hp to 500+ with just a chip/tune on an 8.1 is impossible. You would need to swap cams, add headers, new intake manifold, and maybe a bit more compression. 200hp just off a tune won't do it. I would think being a mech for 17 years would teach you at least that much.

I just read most of the comments here and now that its 2011, and the 8.1 has been gone for a few years now, I get amusement that the new Ford 3.5 Twin Turbo makes more horsepower than the 8.1 and almost as much torque (365hp, 420ft/lbs). Its crazy how times are changing. I'm GM ASEP, I'll agree a chevy motor will run forever, but they are all so damn leaky. I used to own nothing but Chevys, but I have turned to Ford. I like fords styling and they don't leak oil like 98% of all GM products

@tinylightshow It won't leak if you take care of it... I've got a 5.3 w/ 157k that doesn't use a drop of oil, my mom has a 3.6L monte carlo with 76k that doesn't use any. My dad has an 8.1L @ 34k, and 4.8 @ 26k, and his old truck, a 5.3 @ 235k, none use/used any oil.

I greatly appreciate the towing power of those engines, theyre incredible...but damn those things have no acceleration and they barely even rev...if I had use for a big truck like that I'd buy it hands down, but where I live (in the city) I much prefer to have something with great acceleration and decent top speed...
