Prince plays just about every instrument, He produces all his own albums, He's written number one songs for other artists including the Bangles and Sinead o'connor. By the time a record company got round to promoting his new album, he'd get annoyed at them because he'd already recorded the next 3!
MJ could dance like no other and had a great original voice. But as a musician myself, I think you've gotta respect Prince a hell of a lot more.

It really depends on what you mean by 'musically'... If you mean as a musician who plays instruments, of course, MJ indeed doesn't have anything on Prince. But if you mean 'musically' in the sense that one has the ability to create timeless universal classics that have captured the imagination of every generation since, then that goes to MJ. In my opinion.
Prince is cool though, no doubt. But it's no accident that MJ is seen as a cultural god, and Prince is seen as a rock star from the 80s.

This performance was so sick . I remeber watching this is my family room with my whole family and we were really excited because were from Chicago and the bears were back in the super bowl so it was a big deal. I remembered this performance so much because my grandma started crying when he started singing purple rain, but most of that was because she was completely hammered lol. But still awesome . :))
Let me just say, Prince is a very underated guitarist and I think he could have been a well known guitarist if he went in that direction. He plays with huge emotion like Hendrix did. I watched this live and was amazed at how professional he was in the pouring rain. FYI, This is before his hip surgery so he may have been in pain as well. He is a true musical genius.
michaels performance is way better. its kind of hard to sing while ur executing a wide range of complicated dance moves. who cares, he didnt sing live but when he DOES sing live its amazing!! its still his voice REGARDLESS!!
obviously my team lost the superbowl the year Prince did the halftime show but I have to say it was the best superbowl halftime show I've ever seen.... Especially when he's doing Purple Rain with it pouring down on him, no one could script that shit better then it actually occurred. U2's perfomance after sept 11 was classic but this took it to another level IMO....

Notice how loud the crowd is after his performance. It's at a higher audible level then it was at the beginning of the game when Hester returned the opening kickoff for a TD. That's proof of how awesome of a halftime show this really was. The best in Super Bowl history by far!

I think the thing that keeps Prince special is that most of the time he flies under the media's radar. He's too busy with the music--much of it behind the scenes with and for other artist.
This Superbowl show was incredible.

@metrakos If you truly believe Prince was a better pure singer than MJ, you're a biased Prince fan. I'm a fan of both, and they both topped eachother in certain areas. Where Prince was a master of instruments, MJ was a master of dance. Both guys' songwriting was off the charts, and both their music creative and innovative. But I don't believe any objective fan actually believes Prince is a better pure singer than MJ. I mean come on, MJ was hitting high notes at the age of 9.

@TheFreeMentality I think Prince is a way better singer in terms of range, expression, style, character, soul, phrasing on and on. MJ always sounds the same to me, whereas Prince can get raunchy, do the falsetto, do the tenor on and on. ALso, I dont think MJ wrote any of his songs. He had producers propping him up the whole time. Prince is a musician's musician. MJ is an entertainer

@TheFreeMentality as a musician, it's obvious that Prince is a much more versatile vocalist. he has more range, tones & vocal phrasing than MJ ever did. besides, it's easy to hit high notes when you're a kid. when your voice changes due to adolescence, THEN it's something worth mentioning.

Look up MJ's live performance of "Gone Too Soon" at Clinton's inaugural ball or his live performance of "Happy" in a 1975 concert as a teenager, when his voice was still changing. Do you know how difficult it is to hit high notes, or even sing, when your voice is still changing as a teenager? And what do you mean it's easy to hit high notes as a kid? If that were true, any kid would be able to which is clearly untrue. MJ was the better singer.

This performance was so sick . I remeber watching this is my family room with my whole family and we were really excited because were from Chicago and the bears were back in the super bowl so it was a big deal. I remembered this performance so much because my grandma started crying when he started singing purple rain, but most of that was because she was completely hammered lol. But still awesome . :))

Let me just say, Prince is a very underated guitarist and I think he could have been a well known guitarist if he went in that direction. He plays with huge emotion like Hendrix did. I watched this live and was amazed at how professional he was in the pouring rain. FYI, This is before his hip surgery so he may have been in pain as well. He is a true musical genius.

obviously my team lost the superbowl the year Prince did the halftime show but I have to say it was the best superbowl halftime show I've ever seen.... Especially when he's doing Purple Rain with it pouring down on him, no one could script that shit better then it actually occurred. U2's perfomance after sept 11 was classic but this took it to another level IMO....

@kjek1 While I do agree with you, at least understand that he lip synchs because he is dancing 3/4ths of the time. He started doing it in the 90s I think because he was old, exhausted, and sick half the time lol. But yeah, this is probably the best performance because he just...makes this performance the epitome of music and what it's about.
