  • thats my dad driving 121

  • Those 121's were'nt long gettin those cement cars up to speed. Great sound!

  • Im sure there still using 121's in the UK

  • love it ;

  • I just hope Iarnród Éireann can reclaim the freight traffic it has I believe needlessly lost in recent years. Short haul rail is viable in Europe as has been proven in the UK

  • best memory of my childhood by far was being in the cab of one of these and helping my dad drive it!

  • 121's were my favourite as a Kid. I would have been about 10 when this video was made.

  • My lordz! Mega clag!

  • thanks for sharing

  • Been through Drogheda recently for the first time. Alot of earthwork has taken place where the hill side is. Infact it's gone and a lot of dmu and carriage sidings have filled the area. I think I saw a works depot and a carriage and loco washer. Maybe myticalireland knows more?

  • They sound like a smaller version of the Belgian Railways class 55: Beautiful sound:-)))))

  • kinda supid

  • Drogheda always was a kip.

Was it really necessary to have 2 engines to pull those few carriages?!

  • yes it was necessary for safety reasons, for the same reason the the english class 20s always ran around in pairs, Limited Forward Vision When Running Bonnet First..

  • Great video, fantastic sound well put together, locos shunting ,cement bubbles. the locos have gone the sheds gone and now the wagons are going ,some being cut up in Limerick.

  • Thanks. All done with the most modest of equipment ! I didn't know some of the wagons were being scrapped in Limerick?

  • excellent stuff.121s and arrows all no more.shame really

  • great post ing, check out vic berry's scrapyand on youtube and you will see a very sad sight of cie locos waiting in line to be scraped tragic .

  • Yes, a sad sight indeed. The old 201 class locos were scrapped there in the late 1980s / early 1990s.

  • Can you tell me which video that is ? I've looked at a few and cannot see the CIE locos.

  • Nigo82

Great Vid!! It wasn't uncommon for the 121's to work in pairs like that. They used to be seen in that formation hauling the Dublin-Rosslare train when I was a kid. Good to hear that 124 and 134 have been preserved!!

  • i love this video but a lot has changed these days its all railcars but im looking forward to an hourly service to belfast in 2010. marks 3s will run through here once again with 201s thank god.

  • It's all change. But I suppose rail travel is much more comfortable and less noisy than it used to be !

  • nice to see cement bulks cross the viaduct!

  • Yes indeed. A great deal has changed in the last 10 or 15 years.

  • Nice shot of 073. Those locos turned heads all over Europe; check out '666-001' (Serbia) and '319-208' (Spain) on Youtube. Apparently, Tito was so impressed with these locos he ordered them for what was to be a prestige 'Blue Train'. That is long gone, but the locos still run well. After the success with Class 319, RENFE ordered a whole batch of Class 333s, this time with their own cab design and higher power. The Danish NOHAB locos were also the same breed, all from the success of the Irish.

  • Yes and apparently BR wanted some too but the British government refused to allow them to buy American locomotives.

  • Never knew that but it's very interseting! At that time of course, BR was a nationalised company, run by the state, and it's understandable that the government felt an obligation to keep the jobs at home (we'd do the same if we manufactured locos!). But it says a lot that even BR thought the Class 071 was better than the Class 55s, 47s, 40s etc, or anything else that BREL produced. Thanks for the history upd8!

  • Fascinating stuff. Those locos look almost identical to the 071s alright.

  • Great video there! 124 and 134 are earmarked for preservation by the ITG and are currently stored at Inchicore.

  • Yes, looking forward to seeing them running again.

  • Great bit of video, so sad that it all changed!

  • Indeed. I am sad that all the 001s and the 121s are gone. And I believe the 141s and 181s are being phased out. On the other hand, I'm very glad to see the 071s getting such a lovely new paint job!

  • Not long after this, probably only a few months, 121 was on weed spraying duty on the New Ross branch, caught fire and never ran again!

  • That's very sad. As a youngster I loved all the variety of locomotives. We saw everything that passed over the Boyne Viaduct from our house in Drogheda. Back in the 80s, we even saw the 201 B class which were scrapped in that decade. The 121 double headers always looked great. These ones were particularly smokey that day!

  • What's happened to the 121s? Were they all scrapped or did the ITG get some?
