  • Thanks for this video

  • Playing age of empires2 on my PowerBook g3 right now it's a kickass laptop

  • Have this laptop with mac O.S X10.4 upgrade... kickk ass laptop from the 90's,

One of Steve Job's best ideas.... he will always be missed..

  • could i get 3 batteries and charge them all up and them put one in then swap around

  • faster than my ipod touch

  • Had one of those 14.1" ones. From 2nd revision with 300 MHz. I used it as my main computer from 1999 to 2006 - full 7 years! Having it run every version of MacOS from 8.5 to OS X 10.3 Panther on it during those years. Apart from latches for ejecting batteries or CD-ROM units from hot-swappable bays which could break fast the machine was built like a tank. It was my first Mac after I switched from PC. At the time it was really the best notebook out there.

  • @4NaJu Yes, I agree build wise, it was one of the best notebooks in its time, really equal in build quality to the old Thinkpads especially the keyboard.

  • i saw one today at a flea market

  • @puggy605 for how much??? i would have bought it

  • Steve Jobs... not wearing jeans or a turtleneck. Mind. Blown.

  • 200 mhz...uhm yea.... xDDD

  • No jeans? No black sweater? WTF HAPPEND?

  • What an ugly computer, thank god for Johnathan Ives lol

  • i saw a PowerBook G3 on ebay for 57$ still working too lol

  • I agree, I used to have a WallStreet Powerbook and it indeed had the best keyboard in a portable rivaling the Thinkpads. The Lombard and Pismo had thinner, less robust keyboards. Also 5K for a Compaq! Wow.

  • it's funny how all the power-pc stuff went to shit in the end...

  • wow it is a screamer

  • @Cooi1001 Your mom is a screamer. Sorry, couldn't resist.

  • Wait a minute the Mac is less money than a compaq, can't be true

  • it was pretty cool how the drives were hot swappable..

  • 292Mhz seems a little different, never heard other computers with 292, the closest where just 200 or 300Mhz....

  • my Core i5 could totally beat them all :D

  • @mattchew02 lol. even my nokia n97 mini can't beat that. stupid motherfriggin' phone. :))))

  • wtf steve jobs in a suit :S

  • @iron0an yup back when his cancer wasn't eating him away.

  • Man I'm hungry... "Honey, would you make me a Pentium sandwich?" xD.

  • omg he got hair on his head

  • 233 Mhz! They're our fastest chips!

  • I agree the keyboards of the original wallstreets were really nice and meaty rivaling the think pad keyboards back then

  • 292 MHz! Imagine that!

  • Imagine 5399 in 1998 dollars for a Pentium II laptop. Gotta thank China outsourcing and slave labor for the low computer prices we have today. >:(

  • WTF!I was over 1 year old when this came out and i remember that i see these in magazines!

  • macs costing less than PCs... that's something i wouldn't mind having return from the good old days! :p

  • @TheTechFish Or at least super powerful hardware for the premium you're paying.

  • nice oldschool -> i use this kind laptop too :P)

  • Hey I like your.... upside-down apple

  • Apple used to be so far ahead in processors, and now they are just catching the vibe of core i3.

  • @PalmyJason yeah it does suck, but hey next year the refresh of the macbook/macbook pro 13 inch modules will probably get i3 cores.

  • @blajsad

every america ive ever heard says penium and poniac the t becomes so weak.

  • Still my favorite apple computer.

  • Penium O.o It pronunce Pentium

  • LoL, "It eats Intel notebooks for lunch too" :D

  • I keep my G3 14in Lombard as a keepsake. It was the Ferrari of notebooks back in 1999-2000.

  • Steve Job's is an idiot if he was showing off his G3 Chip yet currently uses intel chips. FAIL

  • @MrGhostface2001 because at the time intel was shit compared to powerpc chips.

  • @Athos523 Oh so intel was used only with Windows?

  • @MrGhostface2001 at the time yeah. until intel came out with the chips that made apple switch to them instead of creating a g6. there are a few commercials that apple made comparing a powerpc based machine to a intel based. you can find them on youtube.

  • @MrGhostface2001 when apple used PowerPC chips, the rest of the PC world was using intel pentium series chips, which were all shit. it wasn't until Intel introduced the core architecture that they passed the PPC architecture in performance and power management.

  • 5399?! Computers are so cheap now. Why??

  • Macs used to be cheaper than PCs?

  • $5300 for a compaq haha

  • @yourweedsux compaq computers were the best Wintel pcs you could get. this was way before HP bought them out and completely killed them .

  • What audio is that starting at 6:16?

  • pahahaha a screamer :L

  • is that Steve Jobs?!?!?!??! woah!

  • wow 800x600 and 13in is high end lol, oh how the days have changed :)

  • The Best!

  • I have it!!!! It's so cool!

  • is that steve jobs? ;O

  • it was pretty amazing for it time

  • DONE

  • eats pentium computers for lunch?

    sounds difficult to maintain!

  • well back in the day they had dell compaq and hp laptops those were pentium notebooks they were very slow compared to the apple powerbook.

  • I can't find them in the apple store?!?

  • @strontface2 these were made back in the late 90's, so of course they are no longer available in the apple stores!

  • I'm pretty sure he was being sarcastic. Maybe not though lol

  • @strontface2 well ur dumn

  • "it is hot" this thing actually gets very hot.

  • he was so cool back then

  • i agree.

  • jobs reportedly hated this and the Pismo, as he did not have a major hand in developing the design. The pismo remains a true classic and could have set the standard for Mac Laptops.

  • Anyone want a G3 Wall Street? I am moving and feel like pitching this pile of Apple garbage that I had sitting around all these years. Cant believe I paid 3K for that pile of crap.

  • @puppetmasterblaster I'll take it.

  • If you live in the uk and are willing to pay postage/give me it for free yeah! sure!

  • @puppetmasterblaster does it have an airport?

  • This is one of the best laptop series ever, it introduced so many dynamics that are in so many laptops today, i still prefer my wall street to some ps laptops because everything feals great

  • I used to have a PowerBook g3 back in novemener and it was fast at running os 9 unroll I updated to os 10.2.8 then it was slow and there us one that can run os 10.4.11

  • wow. even on the lowest end macs these days that first photoshop demo would have been done in less than a second! i remember the first home PC we had was in 1998. it was an HP Pavilion and ran at 333mhz with an AMD chip. We were so excited to get that thing home! Had more trouble out of it than it was worth though. I'm about to get an iMac i7 here in a few weeks and can't wait!

  • "im scared" haha gotta love steve jobs!!

  • he still has hair

  • 292 megahertz, now that's screamin'

  • hehe yea

  • at the time that was fast because believe me...if we had vista back then it would take a hour to boot up...with the GHZ now...using that old OS we can turn it on in 4 seconds

  • wow, I can't wait to get one of those.

  • You also have to think that you are paying more for a better graphics card!

  • You do realize that BOTH of your processors are made by Intel, right? This was back when Apple used PowerPC. Not to mention the fact that Pentium 4's are last-generation processors. That's like me taking that same Pentium 4 and remarking about how much faster it is than a Pentium 3; it's kind of obvious which is faster.

  • Even then it wasn't obvious. Until the Northwood the Pentium-IIIS was actually faster at just about everything unless you were using a lot of memory bandwidth. Later a 1.7ghz pentium-m from mid 2003 kept up with all but the 3ghz and 3.2ghz northwoods, and wiped the floor with Motorola's 1ghz G4.

I wondered at the time why Steve Jobs didn't simply dump that wussy chip since nextstep was ported just fine to x86. Took three years of market stagnation for that to happen.

  • Because in case you're the stupidest person on the planet, they can't fit a G5 in there or keep it from getting too hot. So I'll ask. WHAT ARE YOU? STUPID?

  • Comment removed

  • man macs used 2 be cheaper than windows computers, but macs are very expensive now!

  • Not if you think about what you're getting.

  • man there was a Powerbook g3 pismo for $60... I SHOULD HAVE GOT IT!!!!

  • "it eats pentium notebooks for lunch too"

Hahahahahahahahaahahaha 7 years steve, 7 years.

  • intel switch?

  • yeah

  • what does that mean?

  • what does what mean?

    pentium?

pentium is the name of intel's line of processors very likely running in your computer at the moment (unless you use an old mac or AMD)

I was commenting on this video in spite of it being 1999 with apple's ironic switch to intel in 2006.

  • $5,399 for that compaq laptop... Wow I wonder who actually bought that because that is insane

  • Yeah, and that is 10 years ago when dollars were worth more!

  • @meowser007 Phil bought it :P

  • Imagine if the pentium thrashed the powerbooks, they would have to close the keynote down!

  • ha you dont have to fry an egg on them

you do now on the mac pros!

  • @toxicstupidity The new Mac Pros are fucking cold to the touch!

I was a t the Apple Store, and they actually opened up a Mac Pro for me, and told me to feel the heatsink, it was fucking cold! (Yes the computer was on)

  • haha sorry i ment MBP not just MP

  • 292mhz sucks balls this days

  • Vista requires P3 or faster.

  • thats an ugly notebook its supposed to be portable but its made out titanuim which is stupid thats heavy i still love apple products though

  • It's made out of plastic. The Powerbook G4 Titanium from 2001 was made from Titanium, and it was just as light as the current MacBook Pro.

  • @niceveritt18 I believe the current unibody MBP are actually lighter than the G4 Titanium. Even though titanium is a lighter metal, the unibody process made everything thinner and lighter.

  • @niceveritt18

i have a titanium g4 there amazing for saying there 10 years old and still pwn today, apple think for the future so well

  • Titanium is light as fuck. Only aluminium is lighter for consumer materials.

  • This Mac laptop is way before my time, but I think I vaguely recognise Chandler Bing having one of these.

  • lol that thing is hideous.

  • tell me about it

  • LOL thats funny and now apple runs intel... i miss ppc

  • get a older one if ytou miss it

  • I have that Compaq yet! :D

  • 1024 x 768 pixels! wooooooooaaaaaah!

  • @NerdInHisShoe OMG, I KNOW!

  • @NerdInHisShoe Remember that back in 1998, this was a big deal. Just like having a 10+ GB hard drive was considered extremely high end, too.

  • haha it's weird seeing Mac laptops when they were cheaper than PC laptops lol

  • I still have my Lombard Bronze !

  • yeah in 2009 yes, but back then....beautiful

  • Actually, I use computers that are at least 7 years old if not older, My desktop computer is a 1998 iMac G3 and I can do what ever a new Macintosh can do, Can a eleven year old PC load Vista?

  • the G3 cant run leopard, whats your point?

  • rofl owned!

  • Check your calendar. PB G3 was the best pro laptop available on market back in 98-99's.

  • pismo is the best powerbook ever "!!! love the great design it runs so fast. and.....intel on mac sucks xd POWERPC please come back :)9

  • apple switched to intel because they had reached as far as they could get with the ppc chips, they could not fit a g5 into a laptop due to power consumption. Intel macs are good. :)

  • indeed, we need PPC back.

  • i ordered one from ebay and it works great it should be coming soon!!=]

  • The modular bays are one of the G3 Powerbook's best features. I miss them.

  • That's part of the reason why I picked a PowerBook G3 Pismo to upgrade from the MainStreet I was given-those modular bays are sweet. Dual batteries for ludicrous battery life, easy disc drive upgrades (including Blu-ray!), and even a second hard drive in an enclosure!

And, of course, the keyboards, which are still superior to any Apple 'Book released since (WallStreet being the absolute best, though Lombard/Pismo isn't too far behind).

  • It's so amazing watching these videos, and how far we serriously have come along in like 10 years!

  • It eats (intel CPU here) for (meal time)!

He said that in the 1984 MAc demo.

  • It's so surreal watching Steve slag Intel like this, on a MacBook with an Intel processor in it. If only we knew what was going to happen.

And furthermore, I'd like to know what sort of crack Apple was smoking when they decided to ship a G3 machine without an L2 cache. No wonder why they called it the "MainStreet".

  • WallStreet. I wasn't too pleased in 1998 when they introduced this. They introduced this after they showed the iMac, and I was like:

"No USB? You said we'd leave that old crap behind!"

  • The original Wallstreet did have an L2 cache, except for the lowend model which also had an inferior display.

  • I know. Its so amazing!

  • Sad thing is, I have one of those infamous MainStreets, cacheless G3 233, passive-matrix screen, 32 MB of RAM, 2 GB HDD, and all. (At least I got it and some software for free.)

I once stumbled upon a garage sale with a Compaq Armada 7800 (exact same model as in this video!), but my mother nagged me to leave before I could buy it.

I'd love to have compared those two machines myself and posted it as a video response...

  • Steve looks fat here.

    292MHz! Ha!

My Macbook Pro is 2.2GHz and the new one's go up to 2.8.

  • I got the same one, but a Pismo with 500MHZ

  • no its hott for 1998 :D

  • this is one of the best macbooks ever, most customisable, absolutely great!dont talk trash

  • this was the same day as the imac was introduced.

look, you can see it under the black sheet, you see it as phil walks up to the Demo

  • The Wallstreet Powerbooks can be had quite cheaply these days. I snagged one from eBay, working and in decent shape, for $10. Less than $100 in upgrades later, and it's running 10.4.11 at a decent clip! I also picked up a pile of 6 Wallstreets in various working states for $20 and made 3 good working ones out of them. Various family members are now using them. A great notebook that's still useful.

  • copy your post and send it to GreenPeace: Macs have always been recyclable! when in history a Mac has been thrown away? :-D

  • lol all of a sudden i want a powerbook g3...

  • wow a dell... Im impressed...not. oh and its "lol" not "loll" This was 1998 not 2008. Of course a modern notebook is faster. But the 1998 powerbook is still better than whatever you own. Not that I hate windows I just hate fanboys like you.

    You=EPIC FAIL!!!

  • lol

a kid at school 2day was bragging to me about how he has a dell with intel core 2 duo.

and i told him that my ibook g3 would flog his stupid comp running at 1.8 GHTZ, and i also said my neew imac im getting would beat it...

  • that power book is from 1998, if y can find me a dell from 1998 thats anywhere near that fast for those times, u can reply back to me

  • goon, you obviously don't know what you are talking about

  • phil looks SOOO different!!

  • I want a PB G3. I also have an iMac G3 and I would use it if it had enough memory and had Mac OS X (even 10.1 would be fine with me)

  • believe it or not.. i still have a Compaq Armada somewhere in my room.. sadly the power cord got lost and the battery is dead..

  • When the PB G3 was released, it was undisputedly the fastest portable in his time.

  • Really? wow! I miss the days of PPC. The days Steve could get up at macworld and say, "This is the fastest notebook, fastest desktop, beats pentiums by a half mile" Now its just like, " This is a fast system."

  • That is quite true. I miss PPC.

  • If I had one this machines, I would not care how old they would be, I would use them all day!

  • I actually kinda miss the old PBs where they had bays for extra things like drives and batts.

  • first time steve wears a suit he usually wears blue jeans and a black turtle neck.

  • well, he has been wearing some suits since 97. a year before this video.

  • it said the computer was $4,500 (mac) and armada $5399. wow, computers were much more money then today!!!!

  • HA HA HA I didn't realize pcs sucked that bad LOL.

  • how old are you?

  • G3 Wallstreet - Lombard was my all time fav notebook. I still have mine. I wish Apple would make black notebooks again. Wallstreet is the Duesenberg of notebooks

  • There's the black MacBook

  • I always liked the look of this, but then then Ti came out. I liked the Ti better than the Al's

  • "it is hot."

  • man I cant believe that was almost ten years ago. Time flies fast.I use to have one of these. Like when I was 9 years old. b/c my dadd got a newer one and gave me his old one. But I have a MacBook now.

  • its so wierd huh 266mHz LMMFAO its soooooooo long ago. ten years 1998.. wow.

  • I still got a pismo but there´s very little users here. I´d like to buy a new adapter and

a battery as well. Would sell me yours?

  • well I would, but I am only 15 yrs old. On ebay, there are alot of powerbook g3's for sale. thats where i would look.

  • Hello, kate. Thanks for answering me. I´m in Brazil, more specifically in bloody wild Rio de Janeiro and there´s indeed very little users here. I´ll take a look at ebay then. Are these on line purchase reliable?

  • some r reliable. I guess it depends on who you are buying the product from. and the description.

  • That´s the problem. Since I´ve no idea whoI´m dealing with... Anyway, I´ve already took a look at ebay,ok? Thanks again and take care.

  • well I would, but I am only 15 yrs old. On ebay, there are alot of powerbook g3's for sale. thats where i would look.

  • God bless you, dear, and one more time thank you. Bye bye.
