IF GUYANESE GOVERNMENT HAD LEFT THIS TOWN IN GOOD CONDITIONS AND MAINTAINED UP TO NOW, MANY TOURISTS WOULD HAVE GONE TO GUYANA TO SEE IT AS HISTORICAL PLACE OF GUYANA.
That is damn creepy, especially when they find the remains of the piano. I've sometimes wondered what was left of the place, apparently very little, which I guess is a good thing.
So who went in and dismantled the buildings and hauled it all away?...I can see the buildings being overgrown by vegetation but after 25 years they wouldn`t have simply vanished..I know of a LOT of old unhinhabited buildings far old than this which are still standing (Yes they are in the jungle too, in Vietnam)
Now I know this isn't the place to talk a bout Manson but as I rea these comments on here he is so right about the media and the people buying and selling fear! The curiosity of tradegy and murder! And there is nothing wrong with that! it is how the curiosity of the human mind works as long as what the media is selling is the truth and not lies
Take for e.g Every year Survivors, family of victims, Jim Jones Jr. and others gather at Evergreen Cemetery in Oakland CA to remember the Jonestown massacre and dedicate a memorial wall to the victims. Isnt that great, they should do that in Guyana also!
That report was more disturbing than the massacre.... They were sitting in the tractor as if it were a mascott... and talking about how industrial minded... and nazi like they were (and the goverment still is)
I agree they should have preserved the buildings where the tragedy occurred as many people are curious and the site would have attracted tourist and generated some income! Some might think its disgusting idea but take the Coliseum in Rome as an example, Today, the Coliseum is one of its most famous landmarks and tourist attractions. Although it survives only as a ruin, it still rates as one of the finest examples of Roman architecture and engineering.
I completely agree, unfortunately it's too late now. I would have totally gone there if I could, just to check it out, it'd be so weird to just sit where Jones sat in the pavilion, or go into a cabin,
i would also go there. for sure death still prowls around that area. we might ctach a glimpse of it. it would be enough to drop a lot of pettiness from our lives.
I read the locals were pretty aprehensive about looting Jonestown at first. As the man in that programed stated previously: The are very superstitious. But when the alternative is being reminded daily of what transpired there, I guess they picked the lesser of the two evil's.
propain888: When you build that shed...er...I mean "house", please save me a room! Okay?
i cant beleive they call this a massacre. these were a bunch of fucking idiots who believed a convicted felon was the messiah. the only people i feel sorry for were the kids that were murdered by their whacked out parents. may all of these people with the exception of the kids burn in hell. stupid motherfuckers!
oifmarine81: Remember...Jones really didn't go "off his rocker", until AFTER they settled in Jonestown. When he grew more addicted to drugs, and subsequently more paranoid and posessive. By that point, they were all trapped. Jones was a master manipulator and "snakeoil salesman". Primairly preying upon poverty-stricken African Americans, by offering them "a way out" through a radical form of socialism. But you're right. There's no excuse for murdering your own child. I'll never understand that.
The Guyanese government was so embarrassed about allowing Jonestown to create their "country" there that they wanted to eradicate any memory of the tragic site.
I agree with this decision. What a morbid monument to history.
This year they will be erecting a memorial on the site--after 30 years of trying to forget all about Jonestown.
why wouldn't people work to maintain the hard work and effort the industrious people had acheived. People died but what they built with their hands and the sweat of their backs, why wouldn't others work to maintain what was accomplished? How awful.
I think his clothing style was all wrong for the jungle! Rather than a white shirt, with rank shoulder boards, and a flight badge on his breast pocket area, he should have been wearing a suit & tie, don't ya think? Betcha he was even wearing dress leather shoes out there! lol.
That's because years after the massacre, Jonestown was looted by local Guyanese and after that Jonestown was destroyed by a forest fire. The burned ruins were then reclaimed by the jungle. That's why virtually nothing is left of Jonestown.
They should have kept the buildings where the tragedy happened for further analyses and for tourists. I know it sounds sick, but people are curious. What else does the local economy have as a source of income.
they've done a good job though.. just pls. stop waving that thing on the air...thank you.

It should have been left standing. It would most certainly have generated some income as a tourist destination for that impoverished nation.

Yeah maybe but going to the actual Jonestown site might be a problem. It sounds like it was in a very remote location, hard to get to.
