  • thanks for the info now i know a large grass snake was in my garden when i was young i was only half a meter away as well.

  • well done very usefull informations about UK s snakes...thanks

  • dying to see one of these snakes in the uk, apparently there are some adders up at strensal common near york, might have to pop up on a warm hot day :)

  • Learn something new everyday! :)

  • there are no smooth snakes in Suffolk

  • I had to rescue a smooth snake. It was caught up in strawberry netting on my allottment in Suffolk. It didn't seem to mind being handled and didn't rush off afterwards even though it was the middle of a warm day. What a privalege to meet it. Typically I did not have a camera with me just like a year ago when I watched the only bittern I have ever seen eating a fish right out in the open because of low water level. Should carry a camera everywhere!!

  • subbed sub back

  • 1 adder 2 grass snake and 3 smooth snake (exeptionaly rare) and im only 15 seconds in :)

  • The female at 1:36 is very pretty. Not particularly high in contrast, especially compared to that male, but sleek and elegant.

The common adder is the only snake found north of the Arctic Circle. In that region melanism is much more common as it helps the snake absorb heat.

  • The first one is the common adder... gotta love vipers!!!! <3 :3 <3

  • Very impressed with that. Thank you.

  • thank you !!!

  • Can anyone help me identify this. /watch?v=ANzXzlGeuuQ

  • @CarlR818 Hay this looks like a slow worm or legless lizard as there known in this part of the uk, completely harmless I hope you have let it go you are very privileged to have something like that living in your garden.

  • I was driving down a single lane in Devon this summer and noticed a slow worm in the middle of the road, I stopped and picked it up returning it to the hedge where it was out of harms way, I might be intervening with nature but I bet the slow worm never thought there was going to be a sodding road on its travels!! I wished the little fella safe travels and a bright future. ;)

  • nice job

  • there was a grass snake hibernating in my garage found it today had to get it out though, as we are having the garage knocked down and rebuilt was realy odd too see a snake never seen one out side of the zoo.

  • I'd Like too SEE the Grass Snake's EYE's Picked out by the Bird's.............

  • @sagecreeps wierdo if you dont like them dont watch snake related video's they are a national treasure and should be looked after and left alone not bullied by knobs like you

  • scray

  • Like the music is it Joe Satriani ?

  • I went to Epping Forest and I was surprised to see what I thought was a snake. I even took a picture of it on my phone, but after seeing this video, I realised it wasn't a snake, but a slow worm, which are lizards. It was quite a small one, but I was very intrigue to see it !!!

  • I have never seen a snake in the wild but i have seen allot of slow worms ive even held one but i have only seen 2 big ones but ive seen allot of smaller ones

  • your lucky to see a snake in first place

  • The music nearly drove me crazy... I have a photo of a snake here where I live in mid-Wales I think it might be a melanistic adder, but I can see little of it, I'll send photo if I have an Email addreess.

  • great vid

  • great video, i found a snake in a local river (coltashall, norfolk) it had a yellow collar but had a row of spots down its body, what is it?

  • @TrampolineThomas that would be the grass snake dude!

  • @69rpriceyboi K, Thanks :)

  • gretat vid, i used to live in bourne in linconshire and the is a woods that is 3 mile long. me and my dad used to catch grass snakes there but they are very hard to catch and mostly got to the lake before we had even seen them. i always looked for an adder but i have never even seen one.

  • IN MY RIVER HASLINGFIELD CAMBRIDGE UK WE SAW AN ADDER IN THE GRASS THAT SAMDAY A GRASS SNAKE IN HE WATER FAB IM SPECIAL IF THERE RAE LOL

  • Great video, i'm happy i identified them right :). I' doing a course on reptile ecology /surveying tommorow, so hopefully i'll see some Adders/grass snakes

  • How come these snakes can live alright in a region that's mostly cold while other snakes require lots of hot sun?

  • Love thang!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Excellent presentation! I have seen a lot of adders on Cannock chase, they are beautiful snakes and we are lucky to have them. I wonder, have you seen the video on this site of that sploob being bitten by a snake that he and his friend are tormenting (must think he's Steve Irwin) Divine justice methinks!

  • Grass snakes don't constrict, they just eat their prey live.

  • where can you find an average grass snake

  • nice vid

  • Very useful, thank you. I have a Masters in Conservation but sadly, that doesn't help my ecological identification skills! This it was very informative and fun to watch. A great reminder tool, even for the already educated.

  • Beautiful, I found an adder skull in my local corn field, and a lot of tunnels through the mud and grass (long grass). Was thinking, could be a rabbit...no rabbit poo, could be a fox...to small, and there were these circle bit in the grass where it looked like half a ball, was thinking they could curl up there but yes I love looking for them where as my friend, well he was wearing shorts it was late I kept finding sign of adders being there and well, he, he was crapping himself!

  • This is good because when I was hunting with my air rifle I went paced some roots and a snake bit the end of my boot but I had steal caps on I probably stood on it

  • Good if u live or want to travel to britain or maybe move. Very educational.

  • hi i once found a snake under a load of abandoned news papers, it was yellow with a red stripe down its back, what type is this?

  • Excellent video mate.

It might be worth mentioning, also that if Smooth Snakes are disturbed in any way, shape or form without a survey license, then that person is liable for prosecution, and possibly a Prison sentence!

  • 2:58 Kill it? More like die of laughter.... lol

  • wow this was amazing

  • I love reptiles. hense the user name. this is a great video!

  • round eyes dont allways mean a snake is not venomous, mambas have round pupils, im by no means an expert but just thot id be a smart ass haha

  • very good footage people should be aware of the snakes and lizard's in the uk because people in this day and age do not respect the beautiful wild life we have because off the word phobia people will attack harmless wild life apart from the if i was a adder and got disturbed i would be hacked off so get people to reconnise what beautiful wild life we have.

  • Hi Rob, your video takes me back to my school days, when, having found most of the species as a child, I used to teach anyone who would listen how to identify British reptiles. I used to keep a set of photos of the 3 snake species for this - no computers, no internet in the 1950s! Anyway, your video presents exactly the right information, the right amount of information, at the right pace to take it in - and superb photos, to educate anyone who's curious enough to want to know!

  • Hi Rob, I have to say a great little film, love the music etc just one small detail about the grass snake it is not a constrictor - smooth snake yes - grass snake is more of a grab the animals and swallow - often the animals it has taken is alive when it ends up in its stomach.

I just noticed that there is a comment from Ben waddams - the grass snake wrangler himself - if that video of ben tormenting a grass snake is still on here then please boys and girls do not handle grass snakes like ben

  • hi, i have been observing adders at saunton sands in north devon where they seem to live in an abundance and can be spotted quite frequently. havnt taken any photos as yet though as i do not as yet have a suitable camera, but as soon as i do i will upload some.

  • Brilliant.

    Keep educating us.

Lets hope others, with other knowledge, follow you.

    Thank you.

  • great vid I enjoyed that thanx

  • at 1:48 , it looks like part of a cannabis leaf haaa

  • Nicely done... Very well presented.

  • that was great thanks a lot and well done! i hope a i see some of these rare creatures in real life in the wild...but my chances may be slim im not sure if theres many left in Scotland?

    Ben

  • Cheers mate... I try!

Just been on your fine art website - awesome paintings! Do you sell many? Might try and sell some of mine!

  • Very good vid mate. Thanks for posting

  • this was useful for me as i just found some sort of worm/lizard/snake in my garden. it was orangey colour about 50 cm, with a pointy nose/mouth, nothing like any of those shown in the vid...any ideas what it is? it has been lying very stiff for several days in the same position.

  • I've learned from this video. Thanks :-)

  • a few summers ago we went 2 a place in port talbot morfa beach we ad a bag of ad say 10 snakes we put them up the mounting by me in the summer u see loads of them now up the rezz we had a big 1 not far off 4 ft id say with a big lump on his neck

  • very good video, i love reptiles, but its a shame that many people dont see these wonderful creatures in action inthe wild

  • a smooth snake shredded its skin at my dads old house!! we still have it now

  • The first snake I've ever seen in the uk was an adder (nearly touched it phew) excellent video:-)

  • no w8 u gt it all dwn soz pal my bad

  • SPOT ON PAL! nice vid but u missed a few critical points like the adder has vertical pupils the smooth + grass has round ( if u see a snake completely blk + nt sure wat it is check the pupils round (pupils = HARMLESS vertical pupils = DANGAROUS ) .also the smooth snake has a stripe under or near the eyes

  • im pretty sure he mentions tht at 5.22 (:

  • |Good vid about rare precious animals !

in scotland in the lowlands we have 2 places called Blackadder and White adder Any connection?

  • Very nice , informative video with superb photography. I`ve never seen a smooth snake but can certainly testify that an Adder bite is very painful ! As to the comment posted byILDJames - let it go you are breaking the law by keeping it and, even if you weren`t you should not have any animal if you don`t know how to feed it !

  • Lmao I have a baby adder, yes I'm aware its poisinous, any ideas on what to feed it ? I'd be majorly appreciative if someone could tell me, thanks

  • Mice, small though then bigger as it grows..........you are probly better with live mice though

  • i saw a black adder i was with my mate under these trees where a little stream was the i saw somin thuaght oh its a stick curved but it moved and it was massive omg when it came towards we ran so fast the snake was the size of a bus honestly i dont want to go back there theres frogs snakes loads scary

  • good video informative thanx

  • we have some pretty mad looking snakes in this country, pitty ive never seen one!

the last one, the "worm", its basicly a snake with eyelids c'mon lets be honest lol. awesome vid good to hear some Satriani too!!!

  • i was camping in the lammermuirs and we found an adder :D

  • its joe satriani, always with me, always with you.

  • Adder's is most popullar snakes in european's forests :P

  • great video.. do they also have british accent..?

  • is the music steve vai? it souns similar lol

  • top video

  • I think I've seen all three and certainly an adder or 20 in the New Forest where I grew up! I used to fear all the snakes we saw but I appreciate them now.

Great video- not sure that adder-bitings are that common?! They just disappear with the approach of humans pretty quickly! A neighbour was bitten years ago but that's the only time I heard of it happening. Dogs cop it a bit more often! :P

    Great job!

  • kool video.

  • nice video.

i hear alot of stories about people killing smooth and grass snakes because they think its an adder.

this will help alot of people =]

unfortunatly i've never seen any of these snakes around my area.
