  • while your voice sounds like its not echoing, it IS

  • 12:18 Two starts being ejected from the galaxies' cores :3

  • I've played 50.3 hours of this game......

  • BLACK HOLES!!!!!!

  • Kurt took no physics classes in school? How'd he get out of taking a physics class?!? Lucky!!! DX

  • The velocity of the simulation does have an effect. The more you speed up time, the less accurate the program becomes (in order for you not to need a super computer to run the thing). In fact, if you go to the solar system and change the speed to something like 44 days per frame, planets with unconventional orbits, like Mercury if I remember correctly, get thrown out.

  • If that happens and we get thrown out, we'd be a rogue solar system.

That pretty much ends our aspiration to travel to another star system though. But 4 billion years, so we're either dead or we've already developed technology to a point where distance between stars is hardly a concern for any kind of travel.

  • @SSTTEEAALLTTHH I give humanity 50 years before we kill ourslefs over oil.

  • Needless to say adding rings to the Moon would be very bad for Earth.

  • yeah will have universe sandbox 3 it will be more acurate with a new 3d engine

  • It's free on the developer's website, if you're wondering. (Kurt, I'm hoping that you didn't buy it.)

  • @piemanization

    Derp. Nevermind.

  • Does this feature Black Holes as well?

  • Small fact:

The sun isn't the center of our galaxy we are in the corner of the milky way.

  • @TheRyderTube People don't know that?

  • Very interesting software and very physics heavy. Keep in mind that problems with more than 2 moving masses do not have closed-form mathematical solutions. So this software must be doing some heavy numerical calculations.

  • I like shooting stars into the solar system and watching and waiting for the sun to come shooting though. lol.

  • finally!! i thought you'll never try this one, there is a very interesting one called solar 2 too which has a sandboxy achievement oriented gameplay

  • Hey Kurt, your videos helped me shine like the brightest star in the solar system when we began discussing astronomy in science today. Cheers to you!

  • Hey Kurt if you see this( hope u do) I have a game u should try.try a game called Kerbal space program. You make your own rockets and get to see what you can accomplish . Like I said befor hope you see this

  • Work for 15 years to make. Sells for $5

  • Earth didn't steal the rings because of its mass, it stole the rings due to all the fat, greedy people in the U.S.

  • @AirStryke71 So you're calling Kurt fat and greedy? Cool bro, I hope you don't mind if I disagree with you.

  • @Minalear I said 'all the fat, greedy people,' not saying that everyone was fat and greedy, I was talking about the people who were fat and greedy.

So, no I'm not calling Kurt fat and greedy.

And if it makes you feel better: I'm sorry that I made you think that Kurt was fat and greedy?

  • @AirStryke71 Pretty sure fat and greedy people aren't limited to the U.S. only. It's a very ignorant thing to say.

  • @Minalear So you can't let one make a joke without flaming them for some political incorrectness and a misunderstanding?

  • @AirStryke71 I'm not flaming you, I'm educating you. If I was flaming, I would be using all caps and speaking in a language only the writer can understand.

  • @Minalear *sigh*

    You win.

And I guess flaming was a bit of an overkill there...

  • @AirStryke71 Onion Rings*

  • @AirStryke71 borth wrong. stole them because of its GRAVITY that is added due to fat people :P

  • @AirStryke71 that's kinda childish thing to say don't you think?

  • @AirStryke71 lol I'm really racist against the americans not america though

  • @mrjonahjimills America isn't a race

    Aren't you stupid.

  • I've been really interested in astronomy so this looks really cool.

  • you pay'd like 10$ for this game? right?

on the website you can get it for free look up

universe sandbox and click the website NOT STEAM

  • @tiyder2000 That's the trial version. The premium version is $19.99 on their website, it is actually cheaper on steam regardless.

  • 17:20 i think it would be changing how accurate it is.

  • thank you yellow text!

  • i bought it today, but the every object has no texture! what do i have to do to get the textures???

  • @KiranGlitch just like your name

you must be experiencing a glitch

  • @MrTURBOJOHN dont worry i figured the 'glitch' out, i just downloaded the trial version and all the textured was in there!

  • wow 1080p!

  • Did the galaxial collision take into account the supermassive black holes at the center of the galaxies? Sorry for spamming you with comments.

  • What would happen if both of the super massive black holes at the center of the galaxies collided? Wouldn't Andromeda's black hole just eat ours? Or would there be some sort of unfathomable vortex/explosion/holy shit I don't know?

  • @Chaosrain112

Most likely an Unfhathomable Vortex Explosion.

  • @TheUltraGamerGuy @Chaosrain112

Actually, I think the most likely things to happen are that the block holes either merge, or bounce off of each other. It depends on a few circumstances, and I am not sure which is most likely. That I am completely unaware of. If I had to guess I would say merge, but it is basically just an uneducated guess.

  • How do I measure the distance between two stellar bodies in Celestia? That always gets me.

  • So I can see what happens if I give dual suns some rings? And planets? Sweet. Oh, I know, Ima screw around with comets!

  • Really cool stuff, Kurt! So if I understand correctly, the Sun getting thrown out of the galaxy is in fact our entire solar system being thrown out while the Earth's distance to the Sun stays the same?

  • I'm glad you got this Kurt! I've had the game for a while when it went on sale once, and I was hoping you'd get it.

  • If I had this simulator, I'd try my darndest to make everything crash into everything else.

  • more!!

  • if you've watched Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan, you can imagine my excitement when you said galaxy collisions.

  • Was anybody else confused when Kurt's video didn't end with snoring sounds?

  • are there only 2 galaxys

  • Kurt's videos are the only videos where I disable my adblocker

  • NASA wants their computer back...

  • OMG YOU'RE RECORDING IN 1080p!? PLEASE CONTINUE TO DO SO! FOR THE PEOPLE WITH INSANELY FAST INTERNET! PEOPLE LIKE... me :)

  • And a new 1080p screen!

  • You got a new computer!!!

  • What is at the centre of the milky way? (Sorry if this is a noob question, I know nothing about space.)

  • @Ghostlybean it's nothing but black holes and exploding stars in the centre, I dont believe anything could survive for even a second if it were to go there because it would be torn into billions of pieces by multiple black holes.

  • @Ghostlybean A supermassive black hole..... yeah i know.... we will take a long time to reach the center if ever so dont worry :D

  • @Ghostlybean Supermassive black hole.

It's basically the most obvious answer to "what has a large enough mass such that all of these stars orbit it, and is relatively compact". The answer - a big ol' black hole :P.

The milky way's (Sagittarius A*, I think) is relatively small, weighing a little more than 4.3 billion suns.

  • 17:06 It does speed up time, but when you speed up time, accuracy decreases. The time steps (time between all the positions of objects are calculated) becomes bigger (as the program always tries to use as much of your computer power as possible), so therefore it becomes more inaccurate. For example if the time step was 3.75 days, the Moon would orbit Earth in an octagonal shape (30/3.75 = 8), and if it got much higher than that the orbit would get so unstable that it would be flung out.

  • watching this in fullscreen 1080p is AWESOME :D

  • i got that for £1.50 :D

  • It would be hilarious to make one star's mass like 1,000,000,000,000 or some crazy number and see if it would suck everything in. I'll definitely think about getting this. It looks fun and life threatening. (:

  • do a video of you making a solar system in universe sandbox

  • @AustinZombieKIller that is possibly the best idea I have heard.

  • The sun is out yo!

  • can you make the suns mass 0

  • Comment removed

  • Try Spore, it'd be fun :D

  • @XenophMCtwo yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!

  • I agree with previous people Spore is a great game, however lets playing it is a little relative, as the end... well it doesnt have one.

  • @narcfox neither does minecraft does, sometimes thats what makes lets plays funny

  • @narcfox Um, what?

First of all, Kurt LPed Minecraft before it ended. Secondly, Spore has a end, although it takes a while, but not any longer than reaching the edge of the Minecraft map.

  • You may find that the reason it gives different results at higher speeds is to do with calculation iterations. Because it calculates the same number of steps over a longer period, the gravity isn't as accurately mapped, etc.

  • Hey Kurt, have you ever played Spore?

    That'd be a great Let's Play.

  • (look at the mouse)

YAY KURT SWITCHED TO WINDOWS 7!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • YAY THANK YOU KURT FOR 1080P!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wait, 304 views (so its not teh 301 view glitch) but 315 thumbs.. suspicious.

  • What! The Sun is at the center of our solar system? Great Newton's ghost.

  • I remember playing this. I went into the "Closest 300 stars" mode and edited in a supermassive black hole bigger than all the stars combined.

Then I reversed gravity so objects repell each other.

PEW PEW PEW went the universe :)

  • Can anyone tell me what's the average price of LEGOs nowadays?

I see Kurt's space shuttle seems to be priced at 100 USD, which is more than 10 pieces per dollar. It surprised me, as the price in my country is about 2 pieces per dollar on the cheapest ones.

  • about 11:40- it is happening just in days, so it is pretty damn cool :D

  • OHHHHH COOL MAN I HAVE UNIVERSE SANDBOX TOOO :DDD

  • minecraft is still the biggest sandbox :P

  • btw happy 222nd video

  • @MrRandom95 The black holes would simply merge into a larger one

  • 6:40 - 6:45

Dude, your gravity fuckery just destroyed two moons. Jerk.

    07:04

And another one? This is why we can't have nice things.

  • Fun but limited, 7/10

  • Holy shit, this is amazing

Ima put jupiter right near earth to proove 2012 is actual the end of the world :D

  • This is an awesome game!

  • I have a question, can you make it so plantes crash? I'm wondering what that would look like

  • I missed the snorring noise in the end :D

  • they're dancing :D

  • This is your 222 video :D

  • If I had this simulation software I know what I would do... DESTROY THE EARTH!

  • @ChaoticSupernova you get 30 minutes of free trial, more than time enough i think...

  • @ChaoticSupernova been there, done that, was actually way more boring then u would think...

  • @ChaoticSupernova this comment ^ was posted on 2012...wow...end of the world?better start trusting the movies...

  • hey kurt, do you think the black holes at the center of the galaxies collided and if so, what would happen?

  • 7:00 Did anyone else see Helene crash into Neptune?

  • I enjoyed it very much,

  • Yaaaaay! I've had this game for ages and I think I suggested it to you before... can't remember, but it's really fun :D

  • CONTINUE THIS BECAUSE I LOVE IT!!!! I was interested in astronomy when I was 7 and now it's all coming back to me.! :)

  • are there black holes in Universe Sandbox?

  • @kratos24682 I believe there are.

  • Comment removed

  • Make a vid of you upping the gravity of earth so much that it attracts 10 planet placed by you the size of Saturn!! ;)

  • You can actualy change the particle system to render more particles. just change it in the menu. This allows to have a prety acurate look of our galaxy or the "rings" around various planets.

  • Hah, I knew you're gonna get this game.

  • dont be mean to pluto hes my favourite

  • @TheCirrus45 Your favorite dwarf planet?

  • @Surells >:/

  • @TheCirrus45 OK OK, its a planet, just stop looking at me like that!

  • Kurt, you should play Kerbal Space Program ! It's really cool !

  • How can you guys say this is boring? If you only want to watch Kurt play minecraft the whole time you might as well unsubscribe because the rest of us watch his videos for his great commentary.

  • anyone else want to get this just crash something around the size of saturn through the earth?

  • this is boring

  • @justblogingit Don't watch it

  • You're saying we can only have a few billion years of videos left from you, Kurt? :(

  • @LonMcGregor Kurt = male Twilight?

  • @LonMcGregor why is everybody obsessed with ponies

  • @LonMcGregor you made my day :)

  • Check out KSP!

  • Kurt, have you seen any of the symphonies of science? If not I highly recommend watching them. In particular "A glorious dawn", which is kind of a tribute to Carl Sagan. Just search YT for A glorious dawn.

  • you haven't snore each night!

  • OMG i just got this

  • I LOVE YOU

  • this video does not work for me, it dims in brightness like there is going to be an advert then all i can hear is the sound. HELP?!

  • Make a black hole and destroy Earth!

  • 13:25 was just gorgeous.

  • Comment removed

  • Simulate when the sun is ending!

  • 1080p?! Well now.

  • God, I'd love to use this more, but I've had SO many problems with it! It just hates to run on my computer.. and I have a pretty up-to-date computer

  • Hey, what a coincidence, I bought universe sandbox for my friend for christmad :P

  • wow i just bought this game what a coincidence

  • heh heh heh dicksen

  • Dan Dickson XD

  • Spelling error: In the description, you say that you can change the perimeters, not parameters.

  • You need to go to the Earth and moon one where there is only the earth and the moon and then place the sun right next to the earth and see what happens

  • I hope you keep doing more of these!

  • Kurt, you should play moon base alpha... it's made by NASA.

  • This should be made into a series!

  • Galactic cluster$*#& simulator.

  • It would be interesting if Universe Sandbox had simulations with normal and supermassive black holes, then start chucking in random stars and planets. Or even the life cycle of a star all the way to the multiple ends: white dwarf, black dwarf, supergiant, quasar, supernova, etc.

  • The simple kinematics equation Xf=Vi+1/2at^2 shows that if velocity was affected, it would have a much different effect than if time was changed. If the people of this game were smart (Which they probably are) they would change time. When time gets to a large value it brings the need for more calculations, which is why it begins to lag with the large numbers.

  • @Tankbustabro Xf=ViT+1/2AT^2 :P

  • Just stick to minecraft.

  • @doctorseaweed2 Why should he?

  • Put 50 suns around Earth and see what happens.

  • 222 videos!

  • I've been playing for about an hour and I... can't say I know everything... lets check out the tutorial .

  • You remind me of Seananners. :P

  • this is so coool!!!!!

  • I completely expected the Minecraft "going to sleep" animation and forced snoring after Kurt said "I, will see you, next time!"

  • *hipster* I bought Universe Sandbox before Kurt made it cool.

  • @MCOmegaX123

    >implied kurt makes things cool.

    Indeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee--

KURTMAJ.EXE HAS ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM AND NEEDS TO CLOSE.

  • Kurt, it doesn't directly change the velocity. When you have a physics simulation on the computer you generally don't use extremely accurate calculations. In this case the "game" is only adjusting the velocity and position of each particle in small slices of time (you use the mass of all particles to calculate the force on a specific one and use that to calculate the velocity, and update the position based on that for a certain chunk of time by multiplying the velocity by the time chunk)...

  • @schloopfoop This is basically a cheesey numeric integration method, Euler's method. It loses accuracy each step, and the larger the step is the less accurate it is. So, when the "game" is "simulating" thousands of years it does fewer steps per unit of time (if normally you do 1000 steps a second, but want to have each frame be several thousand years... Well, there are a lot of seconds in several thousand years and it would really slow down). This makes it less accurate over long times.

  • @schloopfoop I would try to explain better, but youtube comment limits are blech :(.

  • @schloopfoop euler? my class name is euler xD

  • @kukukai1 What? You don't know of Euler!?

Well, long story short he is a rather famous mathematician and physicist (wikipedia will explain better than I).

It would be rather surprising if you go into any detail in math or physics without running into some of his work eventually.

Also what is a class name? Just a nickname for a specific class? Is it a physics or math class :P? That would explain some things, haha!

  • @schloopfoop Thanks! That's a pretty good explanation. I realized something was different when, all of a sudden, many more stars were being shot out of the galaxy when I sped up the time. I just didn't know why! :)

  • @kurtjmac

You can switch the simulation method to Runge-Kutta integration, which will make everything more accurate, but it does slow the computer quite a bit.

  • @kurtjmac No problem! I aim to inform when I can.

Plus, you definitely keep me up to date on the whole astronomy business anyway :P. It's the least I could do.

It's funny, actually. I wrote an N-body simulator a while ago and the exact same thing happened. The extra distance each particle travels per time slice gives them enough of a chance to escape the gravitational forces of the others. Particularly for close particles since the acceleration gives them a big boost.

  • @kurtjmac

could you show us 2 earth colliding?
