I always knew he was a tremendous drummer, but this shows there was more to his style than just brute power. There is lots of subtlety here, and -- dare I say it? -- a real groove.
I also like how he implements the hi-hat every third beat on the bass drum. "Clutching" the hi-hat as he does with the bass drum really accentuates this piece. I have heard this figure played before, but never with the hi-hat accent. Amazing.
How could someone dislike this? While I wasn't a Led Zeppelin fan, I can certainly appreciate great musicianship. John Bonham was a master at implementing power and groove. For me, this song typifies that. Incredible feel and versatility.
@MeMrecious theres a dark and pensive quality about jones which i like as opposed to the happy big band sound. And williams managed to make the drums mysterious - thats hard to do.
They call those ghost notes...Rod Morgenstern has a great tape showing how its done and used in playing as well as soloing just in case youre an ignoamus and cant figure it out.
@makokan2000 what do you expect..Im just a drummer...throw me a bone and Im ok were just neanderthal animus...now this is another great one Steve Gadds Samba
@NateageIV you must have 2 left hands. It's not that hard! It does sound fricking awesome though. It's, surprisingly, within reach if you listen and practice, sleep, listen and practice, sleep.... repeat ad nauseum.
@kibijit ha ha, don't feel bad!! I was making a joke about this skyrim thing that I read everywhere.. I don't even know what skyrim is.. i heard its a video game or something...
I find it interesting that people have such violent reactions to something as simple as people disliking a video. People are entitled to their opinions. Bonham was one of my favorites. But I do realize that other people have different tastes. Sheesh!
@CarlosMacMartin Glad you mentioned that. Seems a lot of cats don't know what that is. They just attribute it to Bonham. Although Bonham did (as is plainly demonstrated here) have his own great take on the Purdie shuffle.
@CarlosMacMartin Hoooraayy!!! Good for you! You can type "Bernard Purdie Shuffle" and get a prize!!! What else can you type? If you try reaaallly hard you might come up with something new and get a cracker.
Not only is John Bonham a great drummer, but he had the best sounding drums I've ever heard too. The Ludwig Supra-phonic 402, the 26" kick drum, the Paiste 2002 cymbals, the tuning, the large toms, all of it sounded great! Nice, well-rounded and full. Watch his videos to study his technique, but listen to him play his instrument in order to reach an eargasm.
Yep, Bonham's interpretation of the Purdie shuffle, one example of which is "Home At Last" off Steely Dan's AJA. You can see Purdie demonstrate it on the Classic Album dvd of the making of AJA.
@mrake1000 Not much man, but I understand people liking things they can copy. There is plenty of good but not on this thread. Bonham's heavy. you gotta float.
@ppetal1 Bonham's heavy. What an understatment that is. Of course Bonham was heavy.Adding a swinging groove and endless nuance to heavy, that was exactly his thing. And he was gifted at it. "you gotta float". . Did you hear that from your music store drum teacher? What you gotta do is go to all your drum heros and say Bonham don't sound too good to me. You all on drugs?. . See if they don't kick you in the ass and send you on your way.
Also, let me add, as a pro in the industry for many yrs. the egos of many take credit for something that isn't true. To ALLl that read these types of post... Take all of them with a grain of salt. Do not take anyones word that they have absolute knowledge of anything Including my declarations. If it's that important to you, do your research from first hand reputable sources. In this case, IT DOES NOT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE. BONHAMS LEGACY WILL REMAIN IN TACT AS WILL PURDIES. Best Wishes Always.
@artz139, That'sFunny, Jeff Porcaro, "Liked" to call it the Purdie Half Time shuffle because he "Liked" it. He had no definitive data as to who was the first who actually played all of the Triplets in a 1/2 time shuffle. He just called it that because that was his way of identifying it. he could've just as easily said the Bonham half time shuffle. You made the comment that Bonham got it from Purdie, Where's that proof, where he says that ??? you got your stories crossed. An Urban myth.
@shawnfichtner1 1000% true, and nobody does it better than Purdie though.possibly the most recorded drummer ever.this shuffle appears in a steely dan song ,can't remember the name, but that's actually purdie himself on the recording.you can tell when it's him cause he's so unbelievably tight with incredible feel!
Its funny how some beats come easy and some don't, well Ive been working on this beat all my life and its one that give me trouble. My right foot wants to come down in a different place and its a struggle. How nice to hear it icsolated like this, now if I could just see it with my eys up close I might have a shot. John B was such a monster, such a machine.
People forget back in the day, some where called musicians because they knew how to play, not like to day when a band will either record someone else's song poorly or play a track in the background and rap to it and say there a musician.name a kick ass band of today that can rock like zep, other than maybe metallica.
@daddywoofdawg I'm sure if you listened to electronic music today you'd find that it is much more intricate than bleeps and bloops. Producers not only have a vast knowledge of rhythm (they can compose the rhythm as well as feel it), but also a sound background in music theory. Throw on top of it the knowledge of synthesis and mixing and mastering techniques etc... If you're losing faith in music that's where I'd turn. My favorite band? The Doors. My new favorite band? @TheCabCheese I agree, but what I was saying is metallica is about the only new band I can think of that rocks like zep.If anyone knows of some new bands can can rock it hard with a zep sound please, please post there name I would like to find some fresh music.
@daddywoofdawg Look for anything with Dave Grohl drumming, he was a Led Zeppelin fanatic, so you'll get the Bonham sound, so Nirvana, Queens Of The Stone Age and then you might just love Them Crooked Vultures, which has John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, and Grohl in the same band, and they're brilliant.

John Bonham: You were the Jaguar XKE V12 of rock drummers-- Effortless power combined with finesse and style, but destined for an early grave due to shoddy electrics ;-) We all miss you dearly, big guy!
Actually there's a couple of stories here being mixed. Bonham did not steal, or derive his groove from Purdie. The "Purdie Shuffle" was on Babylon sisters off of the Steely Dan record, Gaucho, 1981. He added the Bass drum Charleston figure to the groove. "Fool" was tracked in late 1978.
@MUZIKDOCTR the purdie shuffle wasn't recorded first on a steely dan record and john did borrow this from purdie.that's why it's called the purdie shuffle.as far as i know purdie did that steely dan track himself, but it's far from the first recorded example
@MrBooBooCat I'm surprised how many times that arrow thing is used on youtube.. a few weeks ago, I'd never heard of it, then in one day surfin' youtube, I must have read it 15 times.. i was like "what's this all about"?.. anyway, no harm done.. here's a Chuck Norris joke I heard at work the other day.. " Why doesn't Chuck Norris take showers? Cos he only has bloodbaths!" gold!
I remember my drum teacher was a Bonham freak (which was a good thing as a student) and I'll never forget learning this one. What a great exercise. Bonham had such a great groove and didn't overplay. Black Dog is another great tune that Bonham plays in half time and turns upside down. Who else would think to play a tune like that in half time? Sadly we don't have many groundbreaking rock musicians these days. Rappers and auto tuned pretty pop faces dancing now.
who in there right minds voted down, I can see maybe one by mistake another as a troll but 16 you have got to be kidding me, what's not to like, for real!
@TAZ4169 Woahhh wait. Me? Reassess your logic, please. You're the one spewing immature comments. Don't get a big head over having the top rated comment.
@Kelavmeister Logic can include humor buttermaster. This man was (in my humble opinion) the greatest drummer to ever live and be recorded. And how anyone can vote "dislike" either means A) they are jealous B) they are not musicians. So, GROW UP. there is no LOGIC for why anyone can not relate to such beautiful natural playing. AND he probably has one, two, maybe three mikes total on this kit. It's just fucking awesome. Just go away please. Go spin your lady gaga goo. RIP John.Bohnam
@buttermeister. Go away ? There is no LOGIC how anyone can hear this and not like it. John was the greatest drummer ever recorded (in my humble opinion). He had it all. Dynamics, technique and TONE. Plus he was a true animal behind the kit. He played with soul and passion. go spin your plastic lady gaga goo. And don't forget to go away please. You're starting to annoy me. You definately are dazed and confused.
@Argonautica8.....not Babylon Sistas, but Home Again (it was recorded before Fool In The Rain).....and the last rhythm on this track was a poor take on Steve Gadd's samba line.
@Skinhitta "Home at Last" is on Aja too which was recorded in 1977 and came out before In Through The Out Door (1979) too. But purdie is the drummer on babylon sisters.
@Argonautica8 Purdie was the drummer on both. My point is that Home at last (1977) came out before Fool in The Rain (1979) and Babylon Sisters came out after(1980).....and that's because Babylon is on the Gaucho album, not Aja.
EL MEJOR DE LA HISTORIA, DEFINITIVAMENTE.

@JAEDDRUMMER I used to think a Bonham drumming video would be safe from arrow jokes... then I took a Jaeddrummer to the eyes.

You definately are dazed and confused.

bestdrummerntheworld 1 month ago
@Argonautica8.....not Babylon Sistas, but Home Again (it was recorded before Fool In The Rain).....and the last rhythm on this track was a poor take on Steve Gadd's samba line.
Skinhitta 1 month ago
@Skinhitta "Home at Last" is on Aja too which was recorded in 1977 and came out before In Through The Out Door (1979) too. But purdie is the drummer on babylon sisters.
Argonautica8 1 month ago
@Argonautica8 Purdie was the drummer on both. My point is that Home at last (1977) came out before Fool in The Rain (1979) and Babylon Sisters came out after(1980).....and that's because Babylon is on the Gaucho album, not Aja.
