what country are you in, i never see those flying around, the caterpillars greatly resemble the queen butterfly but the tendricles are more red. very nice video.
Yes, the Canon S5IS camera allow you to snap photos while taking video at the same time.
If memory didn't fail me, I think for this video, I have attached a tele-conversion lens together with a Hoya close-up filter to the camera for closer shooting.
This video is straight from the camera without any editing. I should count myself lucky on that day to have seen these beautiful caterpillars together with a beautiful butterfly laying egg.
pretty butterfly! but damn, th ravaged that milkweed clean. that's what happened to my swan plant too. :P i ended up buying more pants because i felt guilty letting them starve - they started laying eggs again, even though the plant was stripped bare.
I have found a website, which carry a list of butterflies found in my country, Singapore. There is a picture of a butterfly species which resemble the look of the butterfly in this video. They classified it as Danaus chrysippus chrysippus (Plain Tiger) .
Well, to be frank, I know nothing about butterfly. Just happened to come across this interesting sighting, and capture them with my Canon S5IS digital camera (with close-up filter).
It doesn't look JUST LIKE the Monarch, but it does look similar. It belongs in the Milkweed family like the Monarch does and is toxic to predators. The Viceroy, on the other hand, DOES look quite a bit like the Monarch, but it is smaller, has a bit more vein stripes in the wing pattern, and is not as common as the Monarch. Incidentally, while the Viceroy is toxic to birds like the real Monarch, it does NOT come from the Milkweed butterfly family!
No, this is definitely a Queen caterpillar in this video. Viceroy caterpillars look like bird poop with antennas. Their chrysalids look like bird poop, too.

Those are not Queens or Monarchs. Where was this taken? They could be Soldiers, or Plain Tigers...
