I listened to this tape. ( yes I said tape) back in the early 90s back when I was in middle school. Reminds me of those fond yet difficult times growing up. Tori's music was a solace for me.
I first listened to Tori after reading that Neil Gaiman, author of The Sandman, was a big fan and a friend of hers. Since I usually cringe whenever I hear a "singer/songwriter" on piano I didn't think I would like her, but I think she has a fantastic voice and love her songwriting style.
I saw Tori when she was just starting out at an aucostic concert with Neil Young, she hadn't really had a name yet. I was appalled that everyone in the huge hall was yelling, "We want Neil, we want Neil", when if they would have known anything at all about music they would have shut their mouths and listened to the amazing voice that was trying to sing over their voices. The
combination of her and Neil made for one of the best concerts I have ever been to.

@mguidone100 Thanks for sharing your experience. What I don't quite understand is the timing of this concert. If this is from 1991, and her first CD Little Earthquakes came out in 1992, why would she be headlining this concert ? Wouldn't she be mostly unknown at this point? Just curious.
Reminds me of being 13 and listening to my brother's copy of this. I had to pretend to not like it because we liked to irritate each other. I didn't understand the lyrics but the piano and melody hit me like a train.
Polluxaks4...if you were really a man not " little boy" u might realize what she is singing about.... its not just the beauty of her voice that others respond too . It's the feeling... that a woman has that many women can relate to, I being one that was silent 20 years.....the song reflects a heartbreaking reality for so many women...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
If I was a 14-15 year old her voice might sound good, but am not a little boy, so would rather hear a woman sing to me. Also, few performers can truly play the piano while singing (the two parts need to be seamless and in concert with one and the other) and she doesn't qualify for either. That she is popular with younger kids and those who still long for teeny-bopper time is not surprising. Maturity is not her style but almost whimpering with a few louder phrases thrown in; my mood is turn-off.
@POLLUXAKS4 Look dude, your opinion is yours, I'll give you that. But you don't need to come on here and attack, and I'm sure plenty here will agree, one of the greatest singers of the last 25 years. Keep your hate where it belongs; off these videos.
@POLLUXAKS4 lol go to one of here concerts, won't find many kids there. just life fans in their 20s-60s. believe me she is quite a woman. she has been playing piano for about 3 decades, and singing that long too. rolling stone has certified her as an artist of the century. if your "turned off" then go look at the pretty women in lil waynes videos. im sure they will turn you back on.and she is playing/singing RIGHT HERE, in THIS VIDEO lol. trololololol i enjoy feeding you though.
@cScruffy Tori was in The Parent Trap. The twin that played the piano. She disappeared cause she went to England, Ireland and France in 1958 for a quick tour and whatever. It was said that Hayley Mills played both parts but it wasn't true. Silent all these years...is about multiple personalities used for "a means to an end." This one doesn't work...maybe this one will. Note the nodding of the head down into sleepiness in various vids. Someone died A spot on tv mite bring an explanation

One of those perfect songs where your exposed heart is both bleeding and on fire when listening and you just know it's the same for Tori playing it and that makes it even more amazing. Wish there were more artists like her these days.
Truly one of the most interesting an talented artists ive ever heard, first time I saw her I was mesmerized! So much of todays music is manufactured in the Hollywood music mill, true and talented artist are so rare, but here is one!
She is amazing live! I saw her for Choir Girl Hotel, To Venus and Back, and then in '09. She is just as amazing as I remembered her 10 years ago. I love you Tori.
It is said of Tori Amos that she doesn't practice a song. She walks on stage and makes up the song and the piano keys without thought and Tori may never play that piece again. This trait is shared with Diana Krall. Diana went on stage, without practice, and the band was extremely nervous because they didn't know what to expect except to "blend in". Kate Bush never practiced either but each piano piece was composed on the spot. Strawberry Sharon did the same with guitar playing when composing.

Fuck yeah ... feels good in your mouth. Suck it! Suck it!
@ZarathustrasCrown Are you sure? If you learn, say a few chords on guitar, the correct notes are already in the chord figure, both hands work together- on the piano each hand has to be pretty much independent. Hard for those of us who can't chew gum and walk up the stairs at the same time. I think guitar is more linear than piano, it is like 6 keyboards stacked and if you master one string, the rest gets easier. Way more people used to play piano, but now more play the guitar.
People underestimate what it takes to play an instrument and sing at the same time. I know how hard it is, and it amazes me when someone does it as smoothly as Tori.
@laulbow This is what separates Tori from the everyday "Joe" or "Joan". Her ease in playing the piano and singing at the same time is rare. But we have to remember she was put here on this Earth to sweep us away with her talent. :)
Really appreciate how comfortable she can be and turn to the audience, completely foreign to a structured "address" at the piano. Shows talent and comfort. Natural...
She's been inspiring me for 11 years now, and it's funny to compare the feelings through the years. When you go from 15 to 26 the way I have the shit and the pain yet beauty it all delivers at once. She was once my only friend long ago. Now it's all broader and shared in front of my eyes now. I love her very much, and I can't see how anyone can't. Unless for laughs, but no she's the real thing. Period. Very personal stuff too like she could sing about having a period.
@ChloeDust Then learn :) truth is piano is probably the best option for someone learning, all the notes are set up one right after the other in easy to reach order...no wacky chord shapes to worry about. If you wish you could play it, then learn...anyone can learn how with some effort.
This song is great! I heard it over and over again and never got tired. Tori, the girl you're singing about you made her heard. She may be silent all these years but her unspoken words will remain forever in this song. There're lot of us in this world are silent. Many preferred silence over existence, may be acceptence. Thank you Tori for reminding us of that moment.
Love her voice. I saw her in LA around the time of this recording. During every song the audience was completely silent. Not a whisper could be heard. We were all mesmerized by her. One of my favorite shows of all time.
She's using the piano intuitively like a part of her body. That is the point where you really can express yourself through an instrument. Direct transmission between emotion and instrument, that is the highest level of musical performance reachable. Perfectly presented here. Likewise Louis Armstrong had similarities between his very own singing and his trumpet playing style. I wish I could reach that level on drums...
ack, it would be perfect if the piano wasn't vibrating/echoing so loudly (sorry, I'm an aspie)

@laulbow This is what separates Tori from the everyday "Joe" or "Joan". Her ease in playing the piano and singing at the same time is rare. But we have to remember she was put here on this Earth to sweep us away with her talent. :)
Woohoo Tori!

@laulbow
Totally agree 100% she is amazing and anyway that can play and sing at the same time deserves big respect

@laulbow It is extremely hard. I play drums and mastering singing and keeping a beat is tricky. lol Tori is amazing :)

@laulbow

Period. Very personal stuff too like she could sing about having a period.

i wish i could play the piano, they make it seem so effortless and easy, beautiful,
