  • Orbison might realize how lucky he was to even meet Bono

  • Bono might realize how lucky he was to even meet Orbison.

  • my song for lass i left me kids/ wife for.

  • 4:00 Bono's face actually becomes Roy's face for a second.

  • @KangoTV I know what you mean. Is this period, 1987, when Bono started wearing shades more regularly? Hmmm...very cosmic this entire thing, but then, that's how I feel about U2, spiritual for sure!

  • This is where modern rock meets classic rock, Ands its beautiful.

  • at 3:25, The Guy with the beard also worked with Paula Abdul and many others.

  • WOW!! It's amazing how seeing Carrie Underwood with Steven Tyler perform made me do a search for her, where I find her doing "Crying" by RO, then a number of searches later gets me to THIS clip! U2 - my favorite band ever and RO - the BEST male volcalist ever!! And I never knew the 2 were connected anyway till now! What a shore 52 year for a man with such an AMWAZING VOICE!!!

  • It was a sad day when we lost Mr.Orbison...what a great artist!

  • joking

love this song, only recently heard for the 1st time.....where have i been....love orbison and u2

  • I noticed that the composer of Mystery Girl is a Dr David Evans. Is this bonio's real name or could it be the real name of The Edge, the true writer/composer of this Roy Orbison classic?

  • @musiccleverman It's composed, as they both say, by Bono & Edge together (they also produced the album in question). Dave Evans and Paul Hewson are their real names.

  • Hey poster, I can't thank you enough. A fascinating vid. Really loved it.

  • Great rock and roll story.

  • I personally love hearing the story about Roy. Makes you feel closer to him. I love the song Mystery Girl, and I'm thankful that Bono gave the song to Roy. Great job!

  • A singing god

  • elvis said roy had the best voice he ever heard you can hear some roy in elvis god bless them both the world is a little darker without them

  • @chicago90100

I can't find it on youtube , but I have an mp3 of Roy and Elvis singing Are You Lonesome Tonight, and it definitely is them.

  • Brilliant Tune, Brilliant Story. One of the most beautiful vocals ever set with some of the most touching lyrics.

  • Roy is a legend

  • Roy Orbison had such a tragic life... Watched his biography, it is so tragic! How he performed/produced such music after it all, is just amazing! God bless him!

  • Don't anyone ever tell me there's no God because divine intervention went on there. Roy's voice is one of the few can bring me to tears or joy or just bliss. Bono is just pure bliss!

  • That album is one of the greatest from Roy and in the history of music. The likes of Bono, Tom Petty, and Jeff Lynne collaborating in this master piece.

  • the finest song of all time, it makes my eyes a little wet and my heart glow

  • Great story...

  • Have you any... Coca-Cola?

    LOL! Bless his soul.

  • That is an amazing story of synchronicity.

  • amazing story, thx for sharing it!

  • I'll never forget the thrill of seeing Roy live.

His singing voice rocked! His guitar rocked!

His stage presence was rock'em sock'em cool. He lives in the heart of lovers everywhere.

  • @2007rys what was he like you're so lucky

  • Amazing story. A cosmic musical connection. Just amazing.

  • hs is my GOD!!!!!!!

  • What a great clip. Roy has spanned the ages of Rock. There's a story that George Harrison told about going to hear Roy with Jeff Lynn. They went back stage to see Roy and said that they were forming a group with Tom Petty. Was Roy interested? He said count me in. While driving away George kept repeating that he couldn't believe he was in a band with Roy. It must be hard to impress a Beatle. Dylan came along later.

  • love this interview.

  • Really great clip / interview. Love the footage, song and musicians involved. The story behind is endearing. Thanks OpalSkies for posting this :)

  • Bono's story just gave me shivers :)

  • 3 We recognise these rare moments of convergence but forget all the other millions of times it didn't happen .Coincidences are awesomely cool but not supernatural .

  • 2 ,Analysis : there are hundreds of musicians , they write many songs and think and talk / visit each other . By coincidence / probability Roy visited on the day a song was being written in his singing style .

  • 1.Scientific analysis : chance probobilities make coincidences seem profoundly like something devinely supernaturaly orchestrated it (but its not).

  • Roy is a shining example that music IS NOT and should not be about LOOKS. That's what we have models for. Leave music to the talent, not the talentless cutiepies who suck balls, or get paid to suck balls. And to the stupid American right-wingers who can't deal with Bono, he knows more about the world than you will ever know. America is a shitpile now, nothing like what it was in the 50s-70s. RAYGUN started the death spiral.

  • To maintain his vocal prowess, undiminished over 3 decades, all the while smoking cigs, yet-that is a miracle for sure!

  • definitely one of the all time greats !!

God bless ya Roy, you were a top man XX

  • "Well....have you any Coca-Cola?" LOL Roy seemed like he must have been the nicest guy. Must have been a cool guy to be around. RIP

  • "If my love is blind, then i don't wanna see..."

  • bono is genius

  • Who would have thought Bono could have written that...

  • He won the bet re the shades on show here by the way... ;)

  • Hmmmmm....

  • what a beautiful story. It's such a moving song....

  • this is a song for my daughter - her name is Hania:)

  • Good Roy impersonation

  • good video

"she's a mystery to me" ("mystery girl is the album sorry^^) is my féavourite roy's song.I love hiss style in his song, his words, his way of getting dressed...(my english perfect because I'm french, sorry :S)

  • Mystery girl is the name of Roy's album the song is called She's a mystery To Me

  • I so wish/hope this storey is true - I want to believe, but I have my doubts.

Would love to hear Roy's version of events, It just sees to coincidental.

Nothing though, can replace the magic of his voice - that is undisputed

  • Well done Bono, you have gone up again in my book

  • Song's name is actually "She's a Mystery to Me"

  • If I'm not misstaken it's "She's a Mystery to Me / Mystery Girl", if you want to be picky

  • Such a heart-warming story... great artists have access to those misterious connections, that magic inspiration...

Poor Roy, he sure departed too early. What a voice.

  • What an exceptional song Bono wrote. And thats incredibly generous of him to let Roy Orbison record it. After hearing that song, you cant imagine anyone else sing it. Roy Orbison was perfect for that song

  • i agree but its so wierd how it happened!

  • When I first Roy sing "Mystery Girl," I immediately fell in love with it, and it gave me goose bumps. Thanks Bono for writing and producing this song for Roy!

  • Mystery Girl is an excellent tune! He left us too soon....

  • bono looks like elvis costello here lol

  • Truly Amazing story! Great song Bono! Great voice Roy!

  • Wow, this is truly amazing.... I love hearing that story over and over.... Roy Orbison really did have the voice on an angel.

  • Yes it is a truly amazing story. The first time I have heard about it. Not to get to deep on everyone, but our thoughts create our own reality. We all come from the same place and sometimes we just get on the same frequency. As Bono said, "Sounds like complete bullshit." Ahh...but it's not a coincidence. It's real. Ed

  • Its was the best thing for Bono to give the song to Roy,its perfect for him, only Roy can sing it.

  • check out roys version of danny boy best irish song best singer in the world singing it beautiful version

  • I saw this story on TV when it came out.

I bought the Mystery Girl record way before I knew of this story and of course after he had passed away. I was floored on how contemporay it was, here was this legend who was considered by people my age as being an Oldies performer singing UnRoy Orbison like. His voice mixed with current artists instrumentals such as U2 which I recognized right away was amazing. There wasn't one song I didn't like. Check out also "You're The Only One"

  • Excellent !

Thank you for posting this !

  • What a story o.O

  • i am so pissed off! wanted 2 ere roy & this song, not perople biggin them selves up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Get over it! The clip description clearly says what this clip is about. Try reading it next time.

  • @OpalSkies... He can't write. What makes you think he can read?

  • @qsfoxx Good point :) how very silly of me.

  • @jonnysma

c'mon dickhead , dont you like to hear a good crack , jerk!

What a Classic ending when Bono says the lucky bastard.

what a classic song well done boys and thanks for the smiles

  • @jonnysma he s not bigging himself up there s a special situation spiritual actually that happened between bono and roy ......... all u bono haters leave the building please.

  • @jonnysma

what a fucking dick you are !!!!!!!!!!!

  • @jonnysma this is a great story... and a well made piece. You'll find what you're looking for as your brain develops.

  • just recently heard roys songs and his story cant believe the amount of songs of his i love and i''ll be honest i did'nt even know they were his he is a legend to loose 2 sons and ur wife and still produse music of the caliber he did

  • That's right,Roy certainly was a naturally gifted singer straight from Gods side.

Can't be beat and never ever will be.

If you had to put Roy into a Music Catigory,It Would be him and only him in it and it would be called the "Roy ",Not Pop,not rock,Not anything else ,Just the " Roy "

  • indeed

  • Hitler was straight from God's side too; even Satan must have been his creation.

Perhaps we should invent a whole host of other categories too: Mozart, Shakespeare, Carravaggio, Dante, Newton, the list could be endless.

  • This is airy

  • my post was interupted by a glitch in my computer. To finish the story. All the way home in the car George kept saying, "I can't believe I am in a band with Roy Orbison." This gut was a Beatle for Christ's sake. When George called Dylan and told him he said, "Count me in too." Such is the power of Roy.

  • If this story is true and I have no reason to believe it is not. This is one of the great stories in Rock 'n Roll history. There is another great story about Roy. George Harrison and another player, either Jeff Lynn or Tom Petty or both, caught a Roy Orbison concert and went back stage to say, hi. In the course of the conversation the Traveling Wilbury's was born. As

  • Um,no,you are way off and wrong.Go listen to a few Traveling Wilburys clips

  • Thanks for posting this vid. I was introduced to Mystery Girl by my hubby at a time that I didn't know that Bono and Edge had written it and we chose it as our wedding 'shuffle' in '07. It's hauntingly beautiful.

  • great tribute to the late great roy orbison good one bono!!

  • I love his humbleness

  • All the stuff Bono says about Roy- wow- quite a tribute. Really neat to hear this. Thanks for posting.

  • Cool! I always thought this song was a lot older than it actually is. I love it too, my favorite Roy Orbison song! Thanks.....

  • roy orbison, the original prince of darkness. best male vocalist ever.

  • true that

  • Great story, thank you for posting.

  • This story is awesome. Mystery Girl is one of my all-time favorite songs, and I had no idea that it came about this way. Now I love it even more. Miss you, Roy!

  • Good story i suspect his bull-shitting as he is a top of the range bull-shitter

  • I got it. Thanks!

  • There is a free download of Mean Woman Blues on Roy's official website right now!

  • Slow rockin' it!

  • This is just so cool.

  • Good stuff. Good food to my soul. Roy is amazing.

  • How amazing. What a great story. Roy, we miss you so much, your legend will live on forever.

Roy Orbison is the Soul of Rock and Roll.

  • It doesn't surprise me that Bono and Orbison hooked up for this song. They are both absolute genius's!

  • Very cool - Legendary Men.

  • Lucky man, Bono is, to have worked with Roy.

  • I think Bono would agree with you!

  • this is great lol

  • So cool...

  • Such a classic man. I love you Roy Orbison!

  • O_o You're right! lol Doesnt even look like a girl.. XD 6

  • There is a new boxed set on Roy...the Soul Of Rock and Roll, great stuff!

  • Dat dare Bono is a bit of an eejit !

  • Amazing voice of Orbison..AND at this point in his life it had declined somewhat!

Not only one of the greatest voices ever but he WROTE some of the finest classics.

Some Orbison masterpieces approach operatic and shortly before his death,Pavarotti was in the selection process of making an album based on Orbison songs.

  • What a great story of Kharma. What a blessing for Bono. Roy truly had the voice of an angel. When you listen you feel like your having an outer body experience. A voice as smooth as silk. A range unmatched. He was truly tested in life.If you could ask for the gift of a voice from the Lord I have no doubt in my mind Roy had the present.Close your eyes and enjoy his voice. Let your soul soak in it.

  • This footage it is pure example of what make Youtube so cool.

  • Never knew that Bono wrote this. Great song and great performance from Roy. RIP.

  • By the way - if you don't own the Roy Orbison album "Mystery Girl"...do yourself a great big favor and go buy it right now...it will literally change your life.

  • If Roy had have the looks, He would have been bigger than Elvis, His voice was a damn sight better

  • No so sure about that. Yes his voice is better but he's a completely different type of character. Just can't imagine Roy doing the leg moves regardless of how beautiful he was.

  • No Roys voice was not better, Elvis could sing more diferent styles. But Elvis was a fan of his music and Roy was a fan of Elvis music. They where friends. Both had voices others only could dream of. Elvis is the King, and my all time favorite but I am fan to both.

  • Stuff the looks. Who needs 'em with a voice like that. Elvis was rightly in awe of him.

  • this is very good video and roy`s best song....R.I.P ROY!!!!

  • excellent, excellent, excellent. 5 stars!

  • Thats what i love about youtube u can see things like this

  • Bono´s songwriting is hamaleonic XD change so easyly! :*

  • wow, this was priceless. Great story behind a great song. Thanks for posting this.

  • great, great insight. two geniuses together. glad to see bono talking up roy. RIP, roy.

  • nice......thanks

  • lol i saw this on the

    documentary channel.

    i cried

    ]:

  • Roy didnt have looks like Elvis, he did dye his hair jet black like Elvis, had he been a goodlooking guy, he probably would have enjoyed a greater success, his voice was a one of a kind! Great talent.

  • What a voice. I'm a U2fan but Roy really had an amazing voice. This song is beautiful. One thing I really admire about Bono and U2 is the ability to write songs. One of the best songs by Bono&U2 are written for other big stars. She's a mystery to me (Mr. Orbison), Two shots of happy one shot of sad (Mr. Sinatra), When love comes to town (Mr. B.B. King) etc. And Miss Sarajevo with Brian Eno and Mr. Pavarotti. What a tune. Keep going U2 until the end of the world!

  • don´t forgewt Thew wanderer for Johnny Cash on Zooropa

  • 2: 56...1987...Less than a year before he died... I miss him so much...

  • Serendipity sending chills up the spine.

  • Every time I hear a Roy Orbison´s song, I just can´t accept that he is gone...

I love him so so much.

  • Yes i feel the same1

  • I love Bono, and Orbison too, a creative match made in heaven! Bono is an angel, Orbison sings like one!

  • Wow, I have loved this song for years but had no idea that Bono had anything to do wit it an I;m an Irish man, Roy is sum legend tho, Bono isnt 2 bad either!!

  • How interesting. I never knew Bono wrote that song for Roy.

  • No... Paul... You have the voice of an Angel !!!

  • What is the source of this clip? Is it available on DVD? Where? I want to see the entire interview!!!

  • This is from a documentary on Roy O. This clip is the entire part with Bono.

  • can you tell me the name of the documenatry? thx for the reply...what a piece of music history...wonderful story...has been a fav song for a while, had no idea Bono wrote it.

  • I'm sorry I can't remember - I missed a chunk of it and my husband has now taped over the bit I did have :(

  • "In Dreams: The Roy Orbison Story", theres a DVD of it on ebay at the moment

  • Thank you for that :) I will keep a look out for it now

  • Love how the music quietly builds upon itself until Roy's voice takes us on a trip to heaven

  • Jesus, I typed this in, never thinking it would be there. Love Roy. Died so young at 52.

  • Thankyou Bono for making a great song for Roy, Roy I miss you and love you forever.

  • great video, but the song name is "She's a Mystery to Me"

  • My "new to me" favorite song

  • The world is a better place because Roy Orbison was in it.

  • I think you mean he left a nice legacy.

  • ROY = WOW

  • very enlightening fantastic ......the big o... i think the o was for the octaves he could reach... r.i.p roy

  • What a truly inspiring story from Bono, ROY ORBISON was simply a class above - Thanks!

  • Yo Yo!

  • Where did you find this? It´s amazing.

  • Aww I love this story. Roy Orbison seems like such a sweet and nice man. He is incredibly talented and a fantastic singer/songwriter. His voice is absolutely beautiful, just like Bono said: He has the voice of an angel. I love Roy Orbison. He is one in a billion.

  • Roy permanece atual. A voz dele é incrível, e as melodias preenchem todos os espaços.

  • Interesting stuff!!! Thanks for posting!!! Stick around awhile opalskies!!!

  • I love "Blue velvet"...

  • Good song, good writer, great singer, amazing story! Bono may be telling the truth unvarnished or making it all up, I can't tell. But he tells such a good yarn I couldn't care less.

  • No there is an interview Roy did two days before he died in Akron Ohio and Roy stated the whole thing as Bono does here literally word for word. LOL.

  • Wow. He tells so many odd stories, you kinda HAVE to be a BIT sceptical. Well *I* do, anyway. Amazing artists and a beautiful (and much under-rated) song.

  • one of my favorite songs

    the music is amazing

  • happy birthday BONO

  • loved roy orbison in dreams my fav song .thank you for this

  • I really liked knowing about how the song was created and Roy's opinion. Thanks!

  • Roy's a true legend! best singer ever!
