  • because i think most of the people don't know, eventhough it's an amazing fact: this song is dedicated to the writer and poet sylvia plath.

  • @WorstRequiem and actually sylvia plath killed herself by taking pills and lying her head into the oven while her children were sleeping in the same house..

  • Those who are arguing should stick their heads in ovens.

  • If music like this could actually be more heard, and sought out, instead of the shit we call pop, these days, like go and die shitty music, we dont wanna listen to you anymore!

  • My stomach hurt, and my knee hurt because of the arrow. But then I puked rainbows, and got a boner at the same time. With no explanation what so ever I was healed. To then write an odd comment which will only ever make sense to me.

  • This song is pretty much musical perfection.

  • music knows no attitudes. music knows no race. no colour. no creed. music is a universal language made by all people and spoken by all people different and alike. there is no reason to classify music by the people who listen to it. classify it by who it is made, and the reactions it creates.

  • @baerbehr

    YES

  • @baerbehr Music does discriminate against deaf people, though.

  • @ash0mann Music has rhythm, and a written language that deaf people can understand. Beethoven was deaf by the end of his career and he is one of western culture's most celebrated classical musicians.

  • @baerbehr I dunno about you, but I'd feel pretty bummed if I could only read music instead of listening to it. And yeah, he was. He also kept going after the orchestra had finished while 'conducting' it. He was only able to compose the ninth because of his comprehensive knowledge of music theory, which, if you ask me, is pretty prohibitive to most people.

  • @ash0mann You're thinking about it from the perspective of someone who has had the ability to hear his whole life. To a deaf person rhythm, and base resonance is the closest they will ever get to 'hearing'. I think you're underestimating the power of vibration, and emotion.

  • This is my favorite song.

I sing this to my cat, Sox, and the chorus goes: "Sooooox, get your head out of the litter boooox".

  • Why do I feel like this is about Sylvia Plath?

  • @Poet2916

    Maybe because... it is.

  • Listen to this whole album. Then feel like shit for the remainder of that day. Basically what happens.

  • Why are people with good tastes labeled "hipsters" by the general public and hated on? Well, the same reason this song is not as popular as katy perry, even though it is objectively better: the majority of people are ignorant and just plain stupid, especially americans because their ignorance is fed by capitalism.

  • @jugjugsthekoolaidman Yeah, anyone with a musical taste different than your own is an ignorant pleb -.-. It's funny how someone as elitist as yourself is complaining about the term "hipster" when it was basically taylor-made for you.

  • @jugjugsthekoolaidman That is the most hipsterish comment I've ever seen. It's not the type of music you listen to that makes you a hipster, it's your attitude. Do you understand?

  • @jugjugsthekoolaidman how is the ignorance of americans exacerbated by capitalism? (spoiler: it's not you faggot named "jugjugsthekoolaidman")

  • This song has way too many views for a hipster to be listening to it.

  • Anyone who argues about hipsters needs a swift punch in the face.

  • unbelii

  • I enjoy peter's music

  • I doubt the band cares who listens to this band; hipster or not.

  • Saw them open for The National. One of the best Albums ever made.

  • um people know that this song is about sylvia plath the poet who committed suicide by carbon monoxide by putting her head in the oven

    no

okay enjoy the hipster music then @-@

  • I'm not a hipster, dammit! I'm just a liberal atheist who practices meditation, listens to NPR, listens to obscure indie bands, watches too many independent films, and abstains from meat... gosh.

  • @thecritiquevirtuoso You just wanted to show off that you do all those things.

  • @Sodhats

I really don't do even half of those things listed above.

  • @Sodhats You're a moron.

  • some of you people take yourself too srsly.. dude, it's the internet. NO ONE knows you here

  • @VOD713 that is your opinion

  • You're all also whiny faggots

  • @MrPepper1616 lol. you posted that hipster comment a year ago

  • gay hipster shit.

  • @Psycho888999 You can't be serious. Ignoring the fact that some people actually LOVE this album, like me, I'm not a hipster. Hipsters are posers who only like things because no one else does. The people that try to be hipsters are ridiculous. Why can't you ignore the idiots around you and look at the song/album for what it is- an absolute masterpiece.

  • @iGotTaylor homosexual hipster poo.

  • @iGotTaylor hipster.

  • @ben250158 she was a classic bitch. you need to be a man about it and bitch back at her at the same time. you let a bitch dominate you

  • @ben250158 Dude its pretty much simple as this, she apparently isn't good enough for you if she doesn't even try to at least work with you're problem, and thats what relationships are you gotta be able to work with each other through the high's and lows.. but i mean you should try and talk with her about it a couple times, and then if she still doesn't want to deal with it then leave her man, she's just not for you

  • the last verse breaks my heart

  • Fuck any stupid labels like "hipsters" or "indies" or whatever!!!

    Daaaaamn!!!

We all have a fuckin' name!!!!

    So STFU!!!

  • well done everyone who worked out exactly what this album was about without looking on wikipedia

  • This album cover has constantly followed me in terms of popping up on Amazon "recommended music" and here..I have ignored and finialy broke down to listen...wow, I am amazed and can't beleive I was ignoring this! I had no idea...

  • Wow I never thought a song could exactly describe what it feels like to have the entire world collapse around you and to just be sitting there screaming hoping it will end. Once 1:08 hits everything explodes and you can feel his helpless cry for help. So emotionally powerful!

  • This album reminds me of the book "Blankets" by Craig Thompson.. go check it out, NOW :)

  • @jer1ndie I've read it! All in one night, really good stuff!

  • Oh Christ, so much nostalgia... me and my ex-girlfriend used to just fall asleep together listening to the Hospice album. It's so peaceful and serene in a quirky way that it's beautiful. I love it.

  • If feel like Hospice could be a movie.

  • fuck the word hipster, great song btw

  • If this is what hipsters listen to then I think I'm ok with that.

  • I feel like this whole album should be a movie.

  • wowowwaaa wow :)

  • Holy shit...Can we still listen to music and decide weather or not we like it based on the song or album having some kind of emotional effect on us?!?! Or should it be scrutinized and branded as 'mainstream' or 'Indie' or whatever other bullshit title..If music sounds good to you..ITS OK TO LIKE IT!! REGARDLESS OF IT'S POPULARITY!!....jeez...

  • @doondoom you sir, spoke like a true musician and I dont even care if you are not. Labeling music and people is just...stupid I dont get it.

  • I want to know why "Sylvia! Get Your Head Out Of The Oven!" isn't something that hipsters shout at shows. Don't drop the ball on me, hipsters.

  • anyone else annoyed by all the hipster comments! funny enough wouldn't this be more emo, another word im dreadfully sick of

  • @daddycubjudah Just ignore 'em and listen to the music. If you're not a hipster then you won't be offended :D.

  • @daddycubjudah ignorant plebeian.

  • @BBQCereal23 go back to /mu/ douche

  • The production on this song is so great, it sounds like it was recorded live in a church or something, and that's awesome.. in an obscure hipster kind of way

  • can you guys hear my song? cause I got no friends but I'm sure if you guys like Antlers you'd like this: watch?v=Q6q3qRuo7Vg

  • SYLVIA GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE OVEN!!!!!

  • @Dreambro29

    87 pounds all bears repeating

  • @AlbanianSpy wrong song, sir.

  • @chankagogo12

that is the name of my blog, sir. i am aware what song those lyrics are from

  • Ear rape

  • my moms name is sylvia :D

  • Reminds me of Glasvegas.

  • @FinalBossDesu

Indecipherable? Guess that just shows a starting lack of intelligence and metaphorical understanding on your part.

Also, lol @ the hipster label :L I enjoy a lot of popular bands, just that I like the antler's too because every one of their songs is written beautifully and is autobiographical so there is so much emotion put into every sang word.

  • Lol at people calling me a hipster because i like the antlers where I like alot of other 'mainstream' and well-known bands like Coldplay, Snow Patrol, The Killers, ect.

  • @harvmiester1

yeah, liking the Antlers doesn't make you hipster. haha I feel like they are as popular as Beirut, or Laura Marling maybe. I thought they were really popular...guess not?

  • the beginning before the singing reminds me of a modest mouse song

  • I'm surprised I actually like this. <3

  • @sundaybestdays Why would you not? What do you normally listen to?

  • words cannot describe the art that sylvia plath created.

  • great song ;)

I know another great song with the title Sylvia it's from Mike Snow :)

  • woww, never heard anything like this before.

  • I am in love with their music. This entire album is fantastic. it's rare that today's music industry produces something real and substantial, and i'm very grateful to have found this band.

  • this is imacculate

  • If the Sylvia Plath thing is simply coincidence, as several people on here have suggested, why is there a picture of Sylvia Plath on the band's website?

Or why not cut to the chase? Peter Silberman, when asked in interview about the significance of Sylvia Plath, said (quote) "She's sort of a jumping-off point for the real character."

In case this is still not getting through, he's the guy who wrote the freakin song.

  • @roquefort88888 intentional fallacy; but yes, of course, the song is exploiting the circumstances of sylvia plath's death so as to explore the deeper resonances with the situation being presented in the album; in the same way that Sylvia Plath exploited the Holocaust in her poem "Daddy."

  • The whole "Sylvia" thing is an allusion. Please pass the 6th grade people.

  • The whole "Sylvia" thing isn't an allusion. Please skip the 6th grade people.

  • These guys make alot of good songs.

  • It's a plain as day and written in descriptions of the songs meanings everywhere. He is likening his partners outbursts and consuming depression due to the cancer with Sylvia plaths deep depression and eventual suicide. The name isn't coincidental it is a direct comparison.

  • very well said. haha its hard to believe that some of these people actual think the name is coincidental; as if Peter came up with Sylvia Plath's life independently .

Peter's connection with Plath's story is even more evident in the song, Sylvia (An introduction).

  • @chocolatebroadcast good analysis, man.

  • @chocolatebroadcast It's about how he's telling her don't kill yourself.........

  • It's up to everybody to decide what they think the song is about. So everybody arguing isn't going to help. Just calm down and listen to the beautiful music.

  • allusion(noun): figure of speech that makes a reference to, or representation of, a place, event, literary work, myth, or work of art, either directly or by implication. ..

    fuckin retards

  • i think the get out of the oven is kind of ironic to sylvia plath, but this song ain't about her, it's about the wife of one of the members of this band who is dying to cancer

  • wrong.

  • Comment removed

  • @willsdixon1930

nice try, but don't be such an ass

  • the song isn't about sylvia plath people!!!! the song is about a man and woman who are stuck together in a bad marriage, she is dying of cancer and he's forced to take care of her through her lashing out. It's about how even though the cancer kills her, it really kills both of them... The whole album is about that! stop talking about sylvia plath, the name is coincidental.

  • it is about sylvia plath, he says get your head out of the oven, thats how she killed herself

  • @ivorysoul468 that's how a lot of people kill themselves, this entire album is about the same two people and she dies of cancer in the Epilogue, therefore the song can't be about Sylvia Plath because she actually killed herself and this song is about a Sylvia who dies of cancer after her suicide attempt...

  • seems a bit unlikely this has nothing to do with Sylvia Plath haha.

  • @ivorysoul468

It's not about Sylvia Plath, she killed herself after a divorce and she was depressive from a very young age. In the story the lover is with her all the time, not divorcing her. But then again after reading Birthday Letters by Hughes I thought to myself that maybe he always loved her...nevertheless I don't think this story has anything to do with the album.

  • @Elekodyl not many ppl kill themselves by putting their head in an oven...

  • the name isn't coincidental...he connected the two together. In light of Plath's death, he developed his own meaning to portray his experiences.

  • a la mayoria de los españoles no les gusta esta musica que pena muy buena musica.

  • In case there's any confusion: the song isn't actually about Sylvia Plath, even though the line about the oven is an obvious allusion to her.

  • Anyone know what "Sylvia, Get your head out of the oven" is actually referring to?

  • Sylvia Plath, a famous poet and novelist, committed suicide by sticking her head in an oven while the gas was on. (Straight from Wiki).

  • Oh wow, never heard that. Thanks

  • read through the comments you bloke here retyped it for you

The song is referring to Sylvia Plath. Famous writer and stuff. She was married to Ted Hughes and had babies. Guy was an ass and a womanizer. He left her, she entered depression. She then started contemplating suicide. One day she opened up her oven with her kids in the room (who were sleeping) locked the place down and stuck her head in the oven while the gas was running and the kids sleeping. Oddly enough she left a note for her Dr

  • Tom Hughes was an asshole

  • Ted Hughes?

  • yes

  • who?

  • Ted Hughes was Sylvia Plath's husband (woman who killed herself by putting her head inside an oven). The guy was a pompous womanizer who neglected her and her children. Poor Sylvia apparently loved Ted more than her children............None the less Ted knew about this, and so did another of their friends who helped Ted after one of his many failures in life. Supposively her suicide wasn't entirely on purpose since she left a note for the landlord to call her doctor, which sadly wasn't read.

  • ted hughes was actually a childrens author who wrote the iron giant

  • Yes and that same Ted Hughes was a womanizing asshole. Hell even wiki it if you want to.

  • SYLVIAAAA GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE OVEN

  • Definitely my favorite on the album. Deserves more views.

  • stunning ;o

  • very nice band!!!!! :)

  • I don't have the guitar with me but i'll try with my ears..

    Intro:

    C#m B A E B X2

    A E F#m

    A E F#m B

    CH:

    E G#m F#m

    E G#m F#m A B

    A E B (not sure..)

    Bye, forza AS Roma!

  • seriously the last lines are the most heartbreaking. ever.

  • Sylvia, can't you see what you are doing?

Can't you see I'm scared to speak,

and I hate my voice 'cause it only makes you angry.

Sylvia, I only talk when you are sleeping.

That's when I tell you everything,

And I imagine that somehow you're going to hear me.

  • Please, curtains in. Start us off... You swing first. Sorry. I don't know what I said, but you're crying now again, and that only makes it worse. Let me do my job. Let me do my job. Sylvia, get your head out of the oven. Go back to screaming and cursing, remind me again how everyone betrayed you. Sylvia, get your head out of the covers. Let me take your temperature, you can throw the thermometer right back at me, if that's what you want to do, okay?
  • It's really hard to hear the vocals in this one. =-(

  • My name is Sylvia. I love this song. It's so much more than a song; it's a life.

  • He is refering to Sylvia Plath, in case you didnt know.

  • I am aware of this.

  • It took me a while to get that allusion, however, I did enjoy that the character's name is Sylvia, the character on the record that is.

  • Awesome. From a hauntingly beautiful beginning, swelling into rocking chorus that will get other bands jealous, and cedes back into the mood the beginning of the song sets. Like a wave.

  • @demonhawk30 If you like that aspect of the song, you should check out some post-rock. Look up We're From Japan!, Mono, Sigur Ros, and Explosions in the Sky. Maybe Russian Circles. They're a little more metallic, though...

  • @demonhawk30 called post-rock
