  • and a while back the right side tail light melted, and when i changed the bulb it filled up with white smoke and looked way too bright, my guess is its grounded somewhere and i checked all the wires in the back and replaced them to the plug on the quarter panel and still have the same problem! sorry for asking you it just looks like you know some stuff about neutral safety switches, thank you for your time

  • Its sort of still the same. You need a test light and probably if you replaced the wires then maybe the plug or light socket is messed up.

These electrical issues are sometimes very time consuming to trace.

  • they are all sockets that i took off my 77 malibu and they all work, i took out the wires from inside my quarter panel took all day long and i made sure they were good and i wrapped them with electrical tape, and theres about a foot or 2 of the wires that i havent changed but still the same thing! id have to take off the parking brake to get to the rest of the wires, but it will have to be done, my next guess is to keep trying new neutral safety switches, i had to go through 3 to find a good one

  • i got a problem with my 1976 el camino, i replaced the neutral safety switch, but when i connect the plug with the pink and green wire to where it goes on the safety switch, it sparks and if my car is in the "on" position it will automatically engage the starter and keep it on until i disconnect it, when i pull the "directional/back-up light" fuse it doesnt spark any more and everything seems ok, and my reverse lights dont work but i am figuring thats the green wire, i would appreciate the help

  • Part 1:The first thing you need to do is confirm that you have the wires going to the right place and that the switch is working properly, You will need a test light and run a wire from the pos post of your battery for power.

The pink wire should be hot (power) and the green should go to the backup lights. The neutral safety wires are purple(?).

  • part 2: So put your shifter in reverse and using your test light and the power source daetermine which set of connections are for the reverse lights and that the switch is adjusted for them to come on in Reverse. Then put the shifter in Park and see if the other connections work, then neutral, and then make sure nothing lights up in drive or any other gear.

It sounds like the switch may not be adjusted properly (see above for guidance) or that the plug is damaged.

  • Part 3: It sounds like the switch may not be adjusted properly (see above for guidance) or that the plug is damaged.

With the switch on, use your test light on the two plugs from your wire harness that plug into the switch. Only one contact on each plug should be hot. If both are hot you have either a messed up plug or the wires are somewhere touching, and you may have to run new wires.

  • part 4: So after doing these kinds of tests on each component you may find the problem,It could even be the new switch:.

  • thanks a lot i am going to buy a new switch tomorrow, it will be the 5th one ive tried ive installed them all properly they all have different effects... unfortunatly the one i have now is the only one that starts my car, and the pink wire is the only "hot" wire on there, the green wire is not. i appreciate your assistance

  • i got one of my f100 and i have to hold the shifter side ways and jiggle it and keep the key turned... is there away to by pass this switch its hard to start

  • We do not recommend that you bypass this switch as it is a safety issue. If you were to by pass the switch, then the truck could be started in any gear and that could be a problem and cause serious injury to yourself or others.

I would suggest that you locate the switch and first check to make sure it is not just loose or something. Then, replace it if necessary.
