  • slick!

  • Incredible! :)

  • I love the Regent. I have modded a few of them. ..not this mod though.. and lots of good parts inside too. One year I found 3 of them, just playing guitar through one sounds great. peace.

  • That's awesome, but it would be a bitch to keep on a pedal board lol

  • Wow!

    Just to quick questions:

1 - To speed up the delay, would you go about speeding up the tape or moving the second record head closer to the 1st one?

2 - Why is it that the low end gradually are lost through the delay?

  • @neuroxik

    1.) Speed up-the tape.

2.) As the input signal's recorded onto the take, it's then played back and recorded again. As it repeats, it loses data. So the quality of the sound deteriorates with each repeat. Hence the low end being gradually lost as there happens to be more information to lose within the low end signal. I think...

  • i dont understand the part about adding the playback head i have 6 webcor reel to reels.so i am sure i have the tools but your vid and the internet suggestions still dont provide me with enough info on how to make sence of this mod.

  • @WuTangghost0007 I don't understand why he added this head. Isn't it enough to just use a tape loop like described in this video: watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Us7_vzOb0Ag#! Or if you have several maschines just use one to record and the other to play (feed the tape from one to the other)

  • @lordoid i will try that . thanks!

  • @lordoid I don't get it either, I tried routing the output to the mixer and from the aux back into the reel to reel... Works fine and sounds good. And of course the sound source fed into it via the same aux....

  • @WuTangghost0007 they key is to route the installed head to the mixer, not to Tape player internal cirtuit. so then it gets "summed" (combined" back) and this is what creates the feedback loop on tape..which gets that nice saturation and decay

  • you read about this for the delay...

  • COOL!!!! :-)

  • U da man.

  • is it true bypass ??? hahahhaha only jokin'... great job!!

  • hey can you please inbox me the tutorial on how to make this its great and i love it

  • seriously...at 1:43, my face broke out in the biggest grin you could ever imagine. this is so cool, dude.

  • EXCELLENT JOB / Love it♪♫

  • One question though - with a single extra play head, wouldn't you only get one repeat of the guitar sound? I heard several repeats of each guitar strum gradually fading out.

  • DUDE, nice work. This is really awesome! Made my day!

  • Can it record sound from the future? As in pumping enough high voltage into the pickup that when the tape is layered some of it echos on the previous bit of tape.

  • this is not only a dem of his , but a great description of how delay works

  • It sounds so heavenly

  • THIS ABSOLUTELY RULES

  • that is amazing....

  • How did you "add" the extra playback head? Did you just wire it up with the other PLAY head, in parallel or something, like just wiring them both to the same points?

    Cheers!

  • Ooooo man, that is just gorgeous. GORGEOUS.

  • So dumb question. If you wanted to make longer delay, would you adjust the distance of the second playback head farther from the recording head?

  • moh

  • you play guitar better than Lars Ulrik plays druming, and yeah that thing was real cool!!

  • nice bits of flutter every now and again, love it

  • good stuff man!!

  • how would i go about building that mixer? and could i use a cassette tape head?

  • Dude thats tight

  • AWESOME !! great final effect!! respect!

  • That is soo freaken awesome!

  • That just gave me a true appreciation for tape delay. Fantastic!!

  • is that all you did? just add that orange dude and do some cable magic with that head? thats awesome! could you run a speaker out and use it like a monstrous delay pedal?

  • scientist!

  • do u deliver?...

  • can you adjust the echo speed?

  • wtf

  • Great video mister! It inspired me to use my tape deck as a delay. Luckily I didn't have to mod it, I just put the delayed signal from the tape back in the mixer alongside the guitar and voilà! With a slow speed, re-eq'ing over and over and pushing the channels it sounded like ambient hardcore techno.

  • i can smell my next project

  • thats awesome, i want it.

  • ok tell me now. how do you add the extra head to thin type of Webcor? please respond!!!

  • but you added like three heads didn't you?

    is it an endless tape?

  • but you added like three heads didn't you?

  • The valve amplifier and alnico speaker built into these things has a lot to do with the great sound. I have an old valve Ferrograph which does not need modding to get the delays.

  • is it true bypass?

  • Thanks for uploading and showing!

  • i just bought one of these same machines at a yardsale in upstate new york. $2.00 !!! I plugged it in and the reels move and from what i can tell each switch and pot look good...but i have yet to feed tape into it too tell for sure. two questions. should i bother trying to get this old thing working properly as a recording device?....or can you help me turn it into a tape delay by adding another play head and a mixer? thanks!

  • Same idea as frippertronics!

  • I am trying to build one of these, where did you get the second playback head to install, what brand is it? How did you solder the 1/4'' to it?

  • good work psychedelic machine

    id love that cheers

  • SWEEEEEEEEEEEETTT. use it wisely man, use it wisely.

  • do you know if you can do the same thing with a cassette tape recorder and a cassette tape loop? is it still possible to install a 2nd playback head? also: how did you physically install the playback head? is it held down by screws, tape, glue?

    thanks

  • Hi! Does this tape recorder accept only 1/4" reel to reel? Not 1/2"?

  • does the output from the playback head go straight into the mixer?

  • Very cool. Too bad you didn't demo the overdrive of the amp. I used to have a tube driven Sony that produced a Fripp-like sustain. The transport was ruined so it only functioned as a preamp. We used to play with old tape decks without modding them, just making loops. The sound of tape is unparalleled.

  • excellent stuff there!!

  • Is it possible to achieve this with a regular tape recorder???

  • thats wonderful

  • I've got one of these recorders for sale. If interested g3502001@yahoo.com put webcor in message header.

  • early REGGAE was recorded in this fashion... Great video!

  • I have done one of these machines a couple of years ago..in Italy there are lots of these 'magnetophones' and I converted one of them into a tape delay! very funny and..useful!!

All guitarists use boss digital delay..we use analog tape delay!!!!!!

  • awesome!

  • absolutely incredible

  • @michoi2 thank you very much!!!

  • @alwaysmisternoise seriously cool m8!

  • wow.....SO much nicer than vst's. nice work.

how would you feel about providing a diy how to. i would love to try to build a tape delay.

    great vid

  • @TRaddcliff this pretty much is my DIY how to.... if you cant do it with the info i have supplied... keep reading. Every machine is different.

  • Was this shot through a mirror? I noticed all the writing is backwards on the tape recorder.

  • @garyspong it might be upside down, or he flipped it horizontally

  • Great job! Any info on integrating the new play head into the reel-to-reel, is this difficult?

  • Dude, just watched your other video which pretty much answered my question!

  • this was so awesome man, really makes a difference in the sound---great analog sound man a big fat 5 for that!!

  • I WANT THAT !!!!!!!!!!1

  • ugh. i want it so bad!

  • considering what an echoplex costs, this is pretty kewl.

  • Awsome maan!! (Y)

  • Nice :)

  • Nice job, altough a 3-head tape machine doesn't cos that much to buy ;).

  • yeah,

try finding a 3 head Tube Reel to Reel!! near impossible

  • it's not the kill, its the thrill of the chase.......

  • Ahhh very Cool. I have a realistic tube reel Im gonna use for an amp. I like your Mods.

  • very cool!! I am working on a old Ampro. I will turn it into an Amp!! It also has that cool Green Cathode Ray Tube that senses input!

  • you can make it sound better running the extra head into a tube mic preamp!

  • Tape always adds character to sound, great job!

  • nice sound!

  • Check out my Dynacord EC 504 Tape Echo on Ebay!

    330356357581 (put in the search)

  • that is a beautiful machine!!!

wish it were for sale here in the states

  • If you know what the shipping costs are, that wouldnt be the problem!

  • can I buy it from you???

  • Yes you can, but you have to go the ebay way, because its already in there. I'll check the price for shipping to america and post it there on ebay.

  • Should be workin for Fulltone man, nice work

  • Coool

  • Dude, you are most clever! Very cool.

  • Is it possible to stick one end of the tape to the other end so that it doesn't run out of tape?

  • nevermind i saw the other video

  • yes, i used to run something similar to this beautiful setup, i used a loop of tape rather than a spool, it works perfectly.

  • thats a good question... it seems logical

  • yes! YES!!!

  • so...this is very good!

is this the way the did it in the ol' times?

  • thanks to Les Paul!!!! we owe so much to this man!!

  • way to cool bro!!

  • the mixer has no effects, it simply has level ctrl. If you bypass the tape, there will be no Delay! you say:"If you bypassed the tape you'd get the same sound but 1/2-1 second earlier" wrong! without the tape there would be no delay, and no it would not be the same sound. Tape adds so much character to the sound, it is compressing it, adding hiss, adding scratches, changing the EQ of the sound, when the motors start to go bad you get WOW and FLUTTER, as far as loops check out my other videos

  • Huh, hold on a second. sure this system is delaying for aout 1/2 - 1 second but it's your mixer creating all those effects.

If you bypassed the tape you'd just get the same sound but 1/2 - 1 second earlier. I dont see how this tape recorder is adding to the over all sound.

What would be better is to create a loop of tape that goes round and round using only the right reel. Now that would be interesting.

  • the out put of the playback head is feeding back into the input .since the level is quieter it will decrease like that because it gets quieter everytime the tape records what it just played and so on .. and to be embarassingly honest this is the first time i actually realized that i understood how it works..

  • that is quite amazing. love it. have you done one yet with a moveable playback head, for adjusting the delay time? i would love to buy one of these!!

  • Im still working on it.... Figuring out the Slider mechanism!!!

  • there is something magical about the sound of old tape delay isn't there

  • First time I see this,

Very nice stuff, thanks a lot Happy New Year!!

  • it's good

  • can you get enough delay for some pink floyd solos, and what kind of mixer do you need?

    this is really cool

  • can you get enough delay for some pink floyd solos, and what kind of mixer do you need

  • Well you would have to rewind it, I am more of a studio guy so this works fine for me. Plus there is like at least 30 minutes on one tape. If you were in a live situation, you could make a tape loop, like the old Echoplex or Space Echo, then you would not have to rewind. Loops are very cool to mess with, especially when you take the tape out of the path of the Erase Head... I will post a video soon.

  • do you have to have a mixer or could you plug it directly into an amp or a few pedals then the amp

  • you could use just an amp but that would only give you one delay like a slapback, ROY ORBISON style!!

if you want to have control of feedback you need to input new play head and guitar together to input of tape machine, the mixer makes this easy. for different delay times change tape speed (7 1/2 Fast, 3 3/4 Med, 1 7/8 Slow)

  • BlahBlah1011A

  • hey how do you install the other player head?

  • most Stereo heads have three Leads- Black Red (Left and Right) and Ground. Black and Red are both hot- go to Tip. Exposed wire is Ground- go to Shield. The Reel to Reel is Mono. To get that head to a mixer I just added a shielded cable with a 1/4" Male Mono Jack. Hope this helps..

  • nice!
