Iv played in a few London Based bands in my time as a drummer, I mainly play by ear, however looking at this Video has thrown more light for me as a drummer to keep on learning more in-put to my portfolio. It's Like chicagomike says, playing by the sheet is easy when you get to know the notes, Its really not like the ABC's the other band members got to play. Percussion is my life IM now 47 years young and loving it still after 20 years.
Also learn how to train your ear. I ve played with musicians who freak out when you ask them to play by ear. They look like a kid lost in a mall. You should learn both. Once again...music was invented way before writing.
@chicagomike88 I just noticed WOW there are a lot of video's on youtube now that teach reading drum music. Some are good and carefully explain things, and others well, not so much. If you guys want me to make more, let me know. Otherwise I might not take the time since there are so many vids now. I don't do it for money or anything, rather just to help my fellow percussionists.
I'm sick and tired of listening to people saying, "I studied with" this sounds if your learning at the same time as your tutor is, or another "I study the drums", it sounds as if your studying with your buried book rather than hands on playing on the kit., sorry just had to get off my chest.
hi, have you done any blogs on notating for orchestral percussion on a more advanced level? If not any recommendations on good notation texts or guides?
@lenlemsoup No I haven't and in fact the blog I mentioned in the video is no longer mine. One of the reasons I need to redo this video. What exactly are you trying to learn? I may be able to help if you can give me specifics. Thanks!
@lenlemsoup That might be a good plan, working with some percussionists if you can. It would take a good deal of writing or a few videos to begin to explain all the intricacies. Good luck!
not really hold the stick with your index finger and thumb then let the stick hit the snare on the bounce tap the stick with the other three fingers repeat this process, i am a army snare player and we play faster then 30 second notes it just takes practice :D
@MW2SniperEducation Yep, but that's way advanced stuff. Holding the stick properly is crucial and it's frustrating to see how many people do it incorrectly therefore don't play with any dynamics. Self taught people usually have trouble with this.
Very helpful video. My daughter Leticia plays the piano (she has a video also on youtube), but is getting interested in the drums and I've found your video really useful.
Thanks so much for this, Probably the best one Ive seen, Its good to see that you had the drum along with the explanation.. I feel that I will never get the theory of reading music, Its so complicated!

I hope you still make videos like this cause it was so helpful to me.
I'll be going to University this year to study music and was scared about failing music theory cause I'm so bad at it.
but watching your video has helped me understand it and I feel a lot better.
Thank you so much.

Guys, I'm planning to do a new set of videos and rework this one also. It may take a bit but be patient.
Tip #1 if you want to be a GOOD drummer, beyond just being able to play, find a good teacher or mentor. Keep practicing!

@chicagomike88 Hey, oh right so do you have a new blog now?
I'm a composer and I haven't written much for percussion. I just find that there are a lot of takes on notating percussion in orchestral music.
For example I want brushes on snare so I just indicate 'with brushes' but I'm sure there's a better way to do it!
I probably need to just work with a percussion group and learn it practically, that's the best way I think!
Thanks
