Back in 98 my old video store had every UFC VHS that had seen a release to that point. Strange enough it was Shamrock in the WWF that brought me to the UFC. Jim Ross mentioned 'ultimate fighting' one night on Raw and I remembered seeing the vids on the shelf. Been a fan ever since.

@WingChunHard Not staged. The Gracies obviously wanted to promote their art, but I honestly believe this was the best group of fighters who could be scrounged up. Very few martial artists were willing to compete in the UFC until after the first event went through and the promoters proved they could pull it off.

Plus, if it really was staged, why would they invite a roided-up grappling specialist in Ken Shamrock to fight in the event?

@ThePinkMan they certainly achieved their goal, and later show their skills with much better fighters, but still, i think some styles should not be in the same ring for different reasons, and those fights look like 'prepared brawl ' to define street fighting.. wich could be wrong for some people as we all have different taught... if you want to prepare for street fighting, better find the style wich complete yourself than listen to ufc... but it might be BJJ..!

@WingChunHard Yes, but if you've read about the history of the UFC, you'd know that a number of renowned fighters were made offers to fight in the UFC but turned them down. WBA boxing champion James "Bonecrusher" Smith, for example, turned down an offer because he wanted more money. Maurice Smith turned down an offer because he wanted to learn grappling first (He eventually became UFC champ).

I'll repeat what I wrote earlier: This was the best the UFC could do at the time.

@Tech5420 dude Gerard Gordeau was a Savate world champ and dutch karate champ for 8 consecutive years. He was 27-6 in Kickboxing. Teila Tuli was 57-27 in Sumo. Patrick Smith was 66-8 as a kickboxer. Zane Frasier was 17-2 as a kickboxer. Rosier was 66-8 with 66 ko's as a kickboxer. The reason why Royce won so easily was because everyone was a striker.
