There is a book called The Fall of Reach which acted as the prequel to the first game and was released the month prior to the games release (Book in October, game in November) - its just that 90% of Halo fans only play the games and have no idea about the rest of the story, so Reach seems like some incredibly surprising thing to them lol

I always liked the back story with Reach I thought the story of Master Chief in the book was actually more epic than the story of Noble Team. That being said it was nice to finally get a visualization of the "Reach Conflict" and the end was tragic.
Although I despise American politics with a passion, I was truly intrigued with the Covenant political views. I sure wish 343 Industries will divulge deeper into the Covenant within their future Halo games.

@baggedyman they didn't. a few spartan 2 and 3's were actually on missions on other worlds around the time of the battle of reach. Like all the spartan 2 that were with Chief at the time were on a mission to take out some covenant in space or something. A few of Spartans were on Onyx.
@BanzaiSushi probably several months later. The Pillar of Autumn and its crew landed on installation 4 the same time when battle of reach was going on. Then after the destruction of installation 4, the chief drifted in space for awhile until he piggy back a ride on a covenant flagship to reach, then after a skirmish, back to earth.

@Articw0lf In the halo book Ghosts of Onyx it explains alot through the eyes of an elite as a side character. It also says the official names of the alien species other than what humans call them.
