  • 63 year old guy... got to retirement home without internet access and leave us to enjoy the music. No one needs to hear about "how great it was in the old days" crap. Just enjoy the music, it's timeless.

  • Brilliant! just f-in brilliant!! :-)

  • This title is so apt today in 2012. Some thing never change...but they better.

  • Never understood why the Yanks never took to them. One of the best post-punk British bands (along with XTC). Why oh why can't they put their differences aside and get Hugh back in?

  • @youie66 This Yank was a big fan and they drew big crowds and got decent airplay, but never got the credit they deserrved here in the U.S. I never missed a live show here in Los Angeles and as much as I hate to say it, they always sounded bad because of Hugh Cornwall. I'll never forget when their 1st 2 lp's were released and how great they were. JJ Brunnell is a wiz and influenced my bass playing a lot. I was influenced by Jack Bruce, but JJ added another dimension.

  • @BaronTurco oh, thanks for filling me in. I had no idea. They certainly wanted to be Big In America. I saw Hugh Cornwell in Wellington, NZ, a few years back and he was amazingly brilliant, but there you go, we all have different tastes. I saw them a few years ago without Hugh and they were amazing as well, they did a note perfect rendition of Walk on By. Amazing.

  • @youie66 Hugh was talented and sounded great on vinyl, but he always seemed to be high on junk when I saw them live. He really looked like he was ready to nod out throughout every set I ever saw him play and it was echoed in his performance, unfortunately. That never stopped me from going, because after all, it was the fucking Stranglers, and now that I'm almost 64, I'm glad I went to every one of their concerts here in California.

  • YES !!

  • I grew up with this music!

  • Li'l Davy Greenfield for the win!

  • In there home town at the G'live Guildford on Tuesday 20 March 2012

  • I'd forgotten how good this shit was 8-(

  • Great band, great track - they were never a punk band, thouhg. more like the best of the pub rock bands. Take the pub rock ethos, add a dash of punk and voila! les stranglers!

  • Something better change before the financial system breaks down

  • Anthem of my pub in the 80's...

  • They got arested when they did this song i think or there other song ....anyone help and tell me ??? x

  • @trashman456100 Yeah It is Me And Like their songs ha xx punk rock at its very best

  • This Is a Brilliant song even though im 13 years old my dad has on the cd's to the stranglers !x

  • @GymnasticsRiley Way to go kid. I'm 63 and glad to see The Stranglers, and I'm glad everyone can see them and a lot of other bands from that era, on YouTube, but it's tough to find better music than The Stranglers.

  • black and white the raven and meninblack were all good

  • wasadxwqASzQSZAAz|

  • This is what a rock n roll band should be like....

  • dave greenfield you are the 'ducks guts' mate

  • 22 in 77 nothings changed im afraid.

  • How come advertising loads INSTANTLY and the video itself takes centuries to buffer? Ah, priorities, google... priorities...

  • So much attitude conveyed through a P Bass !

  • crybabies all can't Change time-learn to be in time to change the future

  • everybody is on drugs. i love it

  • Bloody brilliant!

  • I bought the Rattus album in 1977 in cassette form(!) off the town market when I was just 13,the guy on the stall said he thought they weren't very female friendly fan wise and more of a bloke's group lol...I'm afraid they've always been my favourite group since then, changed my life.. :)

  • Late seventies were fantastic but we did not make enough, yes.

  • Back then I thought Hugh looked old - now I think he looks really hot - something changed..

  • so great great music to listened in england but in begium i have not the same effect

  • Thank f***k I grew up listening to music like this and not the X Factor drivel,. The Stranglers live at the City Halls Glasgow 1976 now , that was a f*****g concert!

  • @TheIrvo yeh i know what you mean i was there and saw them live..its hard to explain to people now what it was like back then..but musically it was fantastic..cheers

  • the most overlooked band of all time and live they were fuckin amazing.we were spoiled in the late 70s the stranglers, the clash ,pistols, the jam .elvis costello , could go on all day, just glad i was there

  • @tony671 you are so right we were spoilt..there was so much energy it came light a bolt from the blue..glad i was there..cheers

  • The tabby cat makes this video - Tabby's Rule!

  • back when im supot...

  • SOLFEST !!!

  • eveything about this band is super fucking under-rated and after 27 years of loving the fuck out of them, nothing's changed. they mean as much to me today as they did when I was 13...and that's fucking impressive!!!

  • @tommynnocker fucking LOVE EM!!!!!!

  • STICK MY FINGERS RIGHT UP YOUR NOSE lol

  • fuck u corwell?smack ead wank

  • i love the stranglers

  • i have to say it was a terrible shock and made me hit the mute button immediatly when i i put this song on and an advert for little wayne come on!! i wanted to listen to propper music

  • I went to see them last night. :D I was right at the front ,about 3 feet from JJ. I nearly died. I swear he looked right at me and we sang "Walkin' on the beaches" together :'). I was even closer to dying when he lent down to give me his guitar pick at the end. But the woman next to me snatched it first. :( Still, I touched his hand :D I play guitar, and will be learning bass soon. Pretty sure (hopeful?) he gave me some of the bass magic ;). P.S. I'm 15, and wanted to say: Mainstream = Shite. :)

  • @BethanyRachelFairley fantastic where are they next kirk bunce face book

  • 51 an still listen to the stranglers go jj on bass dave jet an oh yer soz mr cornwall hemel pavilion 77 or so

  • I ffing love the awesome closeup at 1:00. They all look so badass, I wanna be in a band like this today as I'm about the age they were then.

  • look at JJ Burnel's head at 1:16 precisely ... funny face of this good guy ;-)

  • The biz........

  • Great early promo. They had all their original gear. JJ with that beautiful Fender bass. I think it was all stolen out of thier van, very early on,so you never see it again.

Some bugger must have it now though???

  • @MrFireblade67 Yeah, probably Steve Jones from the sex pistols!

  • yessssssssss.. remember the time...... and the music ..... and the dope... hehehheeee, although the dope today is not bad.... heheheheheee

  • Dirtiest organ ( sound) around

  • @stellaviolens dirtiest bass sound around...LOVE IT!

  • What an ugly guitar :/

  • JJ is wearing the notorious 'penis T-shirt'

  • Good song and great vid.

It's a pity it is EMI who is uploading it. After United Artists collapsed following a flop film and got swallowed-up by EMI, they mismanaged the Stranglers back catalogue and were the source of many disagreements within the band that eventually led to Hugh leaving. It would be good if we could say they realise their mistake now, but somehow I don't beleive they do. The Stanglers called them Every Mistake Imaginable.

  • CLASSIC!

  • a woman without a man is like a fish without bicycle

  • Great lyrics ... Something better change or I'll stick my fingers right up your nose ... the Punk generation turn 50 in 2012 and have a mid life crisis ;-) Pogo may make a come back ;-)

  • I wish something had changed. At 50 looking back, we didn't do enough to make it stick.

  • @spocksleftball Too true...got to listen to some good music though eh?

  • @spocksleftball : you are from same era as me and you are correct sir. it feels just like it did then politically. it is impossible to look at these 4 people and NOT get it . this vid is important because is shows exactly how to present a BAND in a time where you have NO choice but to tell it like it is.....ball breaking courage of convictions ; and a lesson to all that think stage presence and political clout are somehow subordinate to being considered a talented musician.

  • @spocksleftball as i am not but a young clueless child and a bit wet behind the ears , what was this song refferring to , -what is it tht was better changing ? - , brixton riots , tatcher ... ???

  • @Leemo707 you had to be there in 77if you were you would understand...

  • @59jimmyb fair does

  • @spocksleftball true the energy was their although not everyone liked it but i loved the stranglers i was 17 in 77 this was on the juke box in the pub we used spent pounds playing it over and over and over playing pool for money..magic times..

  • @spocksleftball I'm 63 and a veteran of the Hippie & Punk movements. It doesn't get any better. Even today's LSD is phoney and made out of cat shit for all the good it does. There are still some great groups and artists today, but they never make it on the top stations. The Stranglers live sound better to me today than in the days of the heighth of their success and popularity. J J Brunel is sounding better than ever on bass.

  • @BaronTurco But... everything after there first two albums really sucked...

  • @bbggera ... I disagree, Black and White is killer... quite a 'difficult' listen but I love it's dark menacing paranoid filthiness... worth another listen mate!

  • @jonahflatfoot I agree. Black and White was their 'proving' album. They proved they weren't a flash in the pan. They weren't relying on a back catalogue. They produced a killer album from nothing in a few months. And yet it's almost a forgotten album. The bass sound on Black and White was the best sound ever produced by a bass guitar ever.

  • @stationers I love 'Black and White', I think it sounds like the first two albums just with different type of lyrics but still great!

  • @BaronTurco Mushrooms my friend, grow them yourself it's really very easy and cheap. From what I gather there has not been good LSD since the Sandoz supplies dried up in the early '70's. Unfortunate since I was a toddler at that time.

  • @TheForkedtoungue Thanks. I just might try that. Yes, the good acid was gone by the mid-70's as you said. 1966 wqas a stellar year and 1969 was the best orange sunshine ever. A trip would last 2 1/1 days and another 2 days to sleep and recover. Great times. I love the movie "Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas", because at times they capture what a real acid trip is like. Terry Gillam knew his drugs.

  • @BaronTurco no need to disparage, im only 18 and ive taken great lsd and seen lots of great punk bands, no worries its not all for the shitter

  • @chargedoymachine If you got real, great Acid in this day and age I commend you highly. Mushrooms would be the closest thing I could find or grow, but they tend to make me violent, which was great in the slam pits in '78. Where else could you go a punch a complete stranger in the face? I was a pro wrestler for many years and the slam pits gave me a decent workout. Stick with the good Acid and you'll have some great times and even life-changing experiences. Go to Facebook. My name is Tom Hankins

  • @BaronTurco I'll add you as a friend and then you can see what a complete maniac I am, still at my age. I'm writing a book now about my life in pro wrestling, rock and roll and organized crime. No wonder I'm worn out. lol Take care and thank you for your reply. I generally get death threats from my posts. Take care kid and stick with it. I knew Tim Leary casually and he knew his shit and was a basic genius..

  • I wish something had changed. At 50 looking back, we didn't do enough to make it stick.

  • Here I am 44 years old and this song still makes me want to destroy something. One of the greatest guitar solos you'll ever hear. Magic

  • Very "That Petrol Emotion"...... ;o)

  • Saw them back in 1977 they were harbringers of change. I can still remember Hugh Cornwall shouting at an idiot in the front ' Gob at me again and We'll kick your fucking head in.' Ah Sweet memories.

  • this is the song that "tipped" my head when i was about 12 ...1978...and all my m8s were into Kiss and Van Halen...and such...yuck

  • @swampdodger33 your mates had taste !

  • i saw em at pink toothbrush many moons ago...

  • I can't wait to kill Vevo with my big fucking dick.

  • seeing these lads tomorrow night should be a decent evening

  • Saw them in Cambridge couple of nights ago. FANTASTIC!!

  • nevíte někdo, jestli se tady naljít první tři desky stranglers?

  • Brighton Dome 18/03 - bring it on.

  • This post starts 2 messages below this one.

Do yourself a major service and go and see these guys I guarantee you you will not be disappointed they are amazing once again.

I'm hoping to make the Sheffield 02 Academy on the 25th of March.

  • @S4693B saw them on friday in hammersmith it was great

  • Up until that point I thought that no one could ever relace Hugh but I have to admit that the Stranglers are now alive and kicking. I was totally blown away at how good they were. The set was mostly all of their early material Peaches, No More Heroes, Grip etc. etc and there was only about 3 songs that I did not know.

Absolutely F*cking Brilliant is the only way to describe them. Baz is now more a Strangler than Hugh ever was, powerful voice and awesome riffs.

  • I used to be a huge fan of the Stranglers and the last time I saw them was 1990 in Folkestone, Kent. They were a five piece band then with John Ellis in the band this was just before Hugh Cornwell left, when he did I thought that they were a dead group. I never thought that Hugh could be replaced but tonight on the spur of the moment I went to see them at Rock City in Nottingham (Black & Blue Tour) were they were back to a four piece band with Baz Warne on lead guitar and vocals.

  • * " stick MY fingers right up YOUR nose" < hah, had to correct myself there :D

  • "stick your fingers right up my nose" ,, ahhh,, quality line:D

  • It sounds like something is knocked over near the end of the song

  • @googleisshittoss Your glass.

  • That is one cool bass.

  • @highschoolmusical841 Thank you, mate. I'll check them out as soon as I can. Cheers!

  • @highschoolmusical841 Tell me some good, "true", rap bands. I want to check 'em out.

  • @highschoolmusical841 Bollocks.rap consists of some useless arsehole with an serious attitude problem spouting meaningless, brainless garbage which no-one (apart from idiots)gives a fuck about.RAP-SIMPLE MUSIC FOR SIMPLE PEOPLE.

  • Skinny Jeans !

  • The bass guy is a true punk singer, but Hugh is a better singer on the whole.

  • my dad got me into these bands, better then half the shit you hear today haha

  • @CVcivilrights half? only?

  • @CVcivilrights

  • Great video, loving JJ's Green P-Bass too!

  • STICK MY FINGERS RIGHT UP YOUR NOSE!

  • vevo sucks

  • stick my fingers right up your nose.

  • @mongrelkant I'm going to Las Vegas and shitting on the runway.

  • I remember riding my honda 750 to work with this on my sony walkman many many years ago. Ahh good times

  • love the 70's grit in this. well crafted, gritty rock.

  • the drummer jet black is as hard as fuc*kig granite, maybe he can get dave greenfield and hugh (looks like a geography teacher now) cornwell and the frog to come to their senses and go on tour as the stranglers again, i seen them many times and i want my kids to see them, my daughter wants me to give her money to go to see take (fuc*ing) that for christs sake......bunch of poncey untalented gits, help i'm living in a bear cage.

  • @boylosh1 i think jj would rather stick his own fingers up his own nose!!! after listening to hughs interviews and reading his autobiography my opinion of him has changed. when he left he stranglers he fully expected them to fold.,he believed HE WAS the stranglers and without him they would be nothing. he forgot that jj wrote as many songs as he did and in fact they are going from strength to strength. their last 2 albums are fantastic. and hugh where is he now his psuedo intellectual crap ?

  • NOW THIS is PUNK!

  • thinking man's punk band thought provoking

  • JJB is the definition of cool.

  • Jet was hot in this vid :) Wish I was a groupie back then

  • Fucking awesome song. The Stranglers were the first rock band I ever saw live, performing live at the Perth Entertainment Centre May 85-I was 15,one of the most magical nights of my life..This track puts today's so called "punk" bollocks to shame. Yes I',m talking about that Good Charlotete /latter day Green Day crap.

  • Close to punk in their early days but so much better and more talented than the average "PUNK" band.

Their longevity , with or without Hugh Cornwell, is remarkable. Especially when you consider many bands of this era burnt brightly but only for a short time.

  • i always thought hugh sang this song. i was wrong

  • beautiful

  • Stranglers are quality!

  • Ace video

  • Fuzck you, advert!

  • 2nd favorite bass player after Hooky

  • Going to see this lot next Tuesday in Brighton, can't wait...last saw them 33 years ago!!!

  • @NickForest999 you wont be dissapointed, they are awsome, from mark, big j.j. fan and karate 5th dan.

  • im 44 think i was about 11 when this came out...still 2 fingers up ye...yeah take it hugh...

  • Ah, the internet. So who likes the Stranglers?

  • @UoMPandP MEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

I didn't know there were two singers...

  • @UoMPandP bernard sumner does

  • @UoMPandP I do! they are very original with there music, and they make very good covers! You can't deny it!

  • @UoMPandP I've been a fan since about 1997. Dreamtime was the first album of theirs I bought, though I've known about them since 1988 or '89, and was familiar with the song 'Golden Brown' and few others. They've since been one of my favorites. There are too many gems to mention that I didn't discover until later unfortunately, however it's all balanced out pretty well. You?

  • Was lucky enough to see The stranglers Edinburgh Playhouse Dreamtime was the Album. Ghost train was my fav. Think it was 1986. They were the Bench mark totally !!!

  • @Ianm456 Yeah, Ghost train is one of my faves too, a sure classic. That's cool you got to see them live. They were so ahead of their time, as you said, "...the benchmark"!

  • @UoMPandP I love em.

  • @UoMPandP who dosent. oh yeah every wanker who likes these shit pop stars these days. anyway have all these videos of stranglers collection i pop every day in my dvd player. good to know there are others who appreciate RREAL fucking music

  • Not too much of interest to read in these recent comments about the Strangers. Very juvenile really given the likely age of the participants.

  • Ah bless..you are an angry little chappy . Hope it gets better for you.

  • papermariob . Please let us all know what music you like ?.

  • R&B ...It is the ONLY music

  • The crap modern excuse for r&b or the genuine r&b?
