Ban erhu sounds a little closer to the violin though it still retains erhu's unique tone. The erhu has a haunting tone to the westerners' ear, as cited from the comment of an American classmate of mine. The haunting tone is washed down somewhat by the wooden surface. This is an interesting experimentation. Personally I doubt it will get too popular.

Another SAD example of western culture contamination! Any need for the soloist to dress up like that ? Any need for the conductor to imintate western-style facial expression ? I just saw a Chinese TV commerical - several female models dress in underwears, mix with cut-away traditional Beijing Opera costumes - selling womens' underwear !!!! Can anyone explain to me is this called "cultural liberation" ? Any & every thing western is good and therefore should be copied and imitated ? Sigh...!

Interesting--an erhu with a wooden rather than snakeskin face? There is a video on Baidu Video of a "ban dahu" which is a lot larger than this, also from Xi'an. Do you know anything more about this instrument?
