Why did the Captain leave the thrust reversers on for so long during the landing rollout? You usually stow them by 70 knots or so to preclude foreign object damage, yet he didn't have them fully stowed until the runway turnoff. Only thing I can think of is that he had the reverse levers at idle, but just past the reverse detent so that the doors remained open. Strange.
@cairns65 Keep dreaming. The A380 will never make its 400-plane break-even. The 747-8 keeps the title with superior payload, performance and economy. It's already more fuel-efficient than the -400 thanks to the GEnx and Trent 1000 engines. And it's never been a fall-apart like the A380 is. And good luck with the A350, you'll need it. There's already 15 787s sitting here, ready to go into service early next year. 832 to go!
@reetveter2 Not necessarily. The ceiling was high enough to allow for some hand-flying. I've seen VFR landings in overcast situations and night, but I've also seen ILS landings in clear conditions. You never know until you hear the COM channel.
@Sho69607 Oh, shush, you! Being a Seattleite, I can tell you we have far less scud and rain than that lame "Frasier" show would depict. Who would you believe more: a Hollywood show that happens in a basement or someone who lives in the Puget Sound? Come visit someday, you'll be stunned.
One of the best landing vids i've ever seen. I love how you captured the pilots extending the leading edge slats and I loved the reverse thrust and the automatic retraction of the slats and then redeployment after reserve thrust had been canceled. You can even see the pilots turning off the main wing landing lights at 2:36. Excellent! 5*
@Neno8403 yeah its a really nice landing. arent they supposed to taxi with flaps at 5 degrees? (which also results in the slats extending) Or 10, but im pretty sure its 5. And landing lights are turned off when they turn from the runway onto the taxi ways.
maybe slats are controlled seperately. I have to look that up.
Point very well made. We still do almost all our planes in-house, albeit all wing spars are made in Renton at the 737 factory and trucked 40 miles north to the Everett facility. The 787 is made mostly in Japan, some parts in Italy, the rest all over the US. I don't see the logic of shipping major assemblies around, too risky. Unfortunately, they do it now.
wonderful just brilliant... this is probably the most depressing part of the flight cuz ur all excited when the plane is landing and seeing all the hydraulics and as it touches down ur wetting ur self cuz ur soo amazed at the reverse thrusters then.... all the excitement just goes away and ur rolling at 10 mph.. just what someone needed after coming back from a business deal that went bad and the smell of scotch on his breath on a rainy day like this :D
Actually, Those are slats, and they allow the airplane to fly slower because they significantly reduce the angle of attack (the angle at which relative wind is flowing in reference to the chord line of the wing. Without them deployed, a lot less wind is making it's way over the upper surface of the wing, resulting in less lift generation.
Applying reverse thrust causes them to automatically retract allowing for better braking & stopping effect.
wow wat a great explanation! thanks mate! i flew from frankfurt to miami not long ago with this boeing 747-400! great airplane although flight entartainment wasnt on the highest level :(
Landing can be tricky for a 747 as they are very fast and stall if you go too slow, in the air is pretty simple with a really straight forward autopilot.
the leading edge slats retract in conjunction with the deploying spoilers upon landing to help break the lift and allows the brakes to work more effectively.
hmm, was that the flaps receeding as soon as it touched down? Notice the flaps on the front of the wing seem to recoil upwards as soon as it touches down. (im not speaking about the speed brakes or the reverse thrust) Can someone please tell me if that is meant to happen?
I think he´s talking about the leading edge flaps. These are highlift devices that extend togehter with the trailing edge flaps at the rear side of the wing. I read that the slats retract on landing when reverse thrust is engaged to protect them from being damaged by dirt or stones that could be thrown up by the reverse thrust.
LH Am Besten, that comment about retacting the wing slats very interesting !! But the slats must be combined with the fowler flaps, i cannot fathom that the main flaps are retracted at this cirital stage in the flare, ok I know the camber is auto retracted at I think 5% flaps on 747. How does this work?
You don't realize how heavy and large this thing is until you see it land. Amazing how the engines and wing jostled on touchdown. The pressure those things must be under and yet it flies. Outstanding video.

They re-deploy when reverse thrust is cancelled and retract again on normal flap retraction as part of the after landing checks.
They kept the spoilers on for a long time!

during reverse thrust they raise because of the engine location and to change the airflow through the engines

A380 is french?
Airbus is German, French, Italian, British, Spanish, ... Airbus is part of the EADS group, spread throughout Europe.
Planes are very globalized. Do you know how much Siemens is in the B747? And how much GE (General Electric) in the A380? :)

the slaps go back into glight-podition, because the reversers make many dirt and little flying stones which can be hit the slaps.

That is to avoid FOD (Foreign Object Damage). That means that they retract so nothing that might be pulled by the engines on reverse enters the wing.
