@iwan7413 It comes from old English. The grammatical shift occured around the 13th & 14th century. Like a lot of rules in English it could be said "it just is" because languages evolve. But it is believed that basically it was found to look better. The i standing on it's own without capitalization looked like part of a word broken off, Canterbury Tales was printed with the capital I and eventually it took over.
