Thank you so much for posting this! Joan Baez has a pure voice and is simply a charm to listen to. She does a magnificent job [as always] with this classic old ballad.
I first heard of Mary Hamilton when I read James Mitchener's "The Drifters" in the early 1970's. Part of the lyrics featured in that beautiful book, and I always wondered what the story was behind the lyrics. A few years ago, I found a shorter version by Joan Baez on You Tube and it started to make sense. This full version fills in the gaps, and what a beautiful rendition of a classic song this is!
@BubblesPothowari I have been looking for this rendition for over 40 years...I first heard this song when I was in the Coast Guard and her music has stayed with me...
Ah , Joannie hen. If only oor universes had crossed. But then again, ah'm spoken for, and widnae swap ma bird for ye, tho ye are a beatiful lassie. I'll tell BOb ye were askin for him". Och aye the noo, Glesga rules etc etc
This is one of the reasons that Joan Baez was one of the world's most respected singers long before she ever recorded a Dylan song. Beautiful, powerful, and a very ugly story of class and sex exploitation all rolled into one..
This song always reminds me of drug users.... the UK drives them (except the rich ones) to third class citizens... when i see one of the more scary ones... always think of that line 'if you'd a mind to save my life you'd never have shamed me here'
Yesterday I checked out a Joan Baez CD from the public library. It is titled, "Joan Baez", from 1963. OMG. I can't get enough of it. I am not her generation, but I have become her biggest fan. Trans-magnificent.
@gatsby7000 You wanna know something weird? My car has been broken into three times, and each time some freak steals my Joan Baez CD! I mean three different times now. I quit buying them because I can't ever retain them. And no one steals my Ozzy or Smashing Pumpkins, just Joan Baez and Simon and Garfunkle. . . go figure. . .

First read about this song in James Michener's truly disturbing book, "The Drifters". Joan Baez is the original Gretchen!

Mother of all country songs.... That's just what some people would do, and the tale's told with such compassion, "alas, for thee."

@1psoas9 It's not a country song, it's a folk song.

Her voice is so clear and pure. Listening to her is a short vacation in heaven. And she enunciates clearly enough to actually understand the words.
