@dunemoonbeam3 No it doesn't. This is just the preferred art style, there are many secular shades of black, white and grey. It's beautiful to see how vividly the artist and this film has produced a unique taste.

its on par with other studies just watch the dvd extras, they made their own CG studio for the sake of the film cuz pixar turned them down, and now the CG studio has grown in its own right serving mostly euro filmmakers

Why so many people are bothered with the fact it's black & white? I mean Sin City is black & white too (with some red) and it's still awesome! It's purely a question of style and Renaissance is great in b&w, the storyline is another issue but from an artistic and technical point of view it's hard to argue against it.

To answer someone's question: this is CG possible with any major 3d animation software (maya, 3ds, cinema4d - they all support this type of rendering to final scene). However, some of the animation team's achievements are quite amazing. In fact, making it only b&w with high contrast is probably harder, considering they would have to pay special attention to the lighting in the scene, so that what needs to be seen is visible.

I just watched the film today. It was much better than I thought. I haven't seen a good movie this awesome since "The Matrix." It's just as dark and mysterious as "Blade Runner" and "Ghost In The Shell." You gotta watch it. You won't be disappointed.
