What'd I miss? Why's he unbearably in love with Clara at this point in the story? Don't answer--I'll go back (I hope it's not the ol' "love at first sight" gambit)..
@WEEZERman1212 Here's a ROUGH translation. They're saying: "the origins of operetta--precursor to what becomes the Broadway musical--are in Italian "opera buffe," so learn Italian or go back to watching shows about cute kittens. (I hope that wasn't TOO rough).
@dantean i cant tell if youre making a joke or not... but what you just said makes no sense. i guess thats what you think? in which case youre an idiot.
Clarke has her moments, but her voice, though impressive, just can't hit the really operatic notes, like O'hara can, and I am biased, since O'hara was so perfect in the role.
@sonson226 To be fair, all of Morrison's versions on youtube (if they're the same ones I found) are from the OBC, not live. It's quite different performing a song after running around the stage and doing previous scenes.
With that said, while I think Lazar does a better job overall (he does such a great job of adding in little mannerisms which totally go with the image of an excited young man completely in love), I think Morrison has a smoother, more full voice.
@sonson226 Yes, she was flat on the top note. She acts the part well, but at times her voice doesn't cut it. Kelli O'Hara is the original Clara. She's a goddess. I'd recommend you listen to her on the original cast recording.
@Judill absolutely -- I have been enjoying the OBC recording....I wish someone would upload Kelli & Matt Morrison in the play....I have just discovered this play & realized that I missed it at Arena Stage here in DC....I am sad not to have been able to see it live. Maybe someday...Anyone know if it will come back to the broadway??
@FrenchToastPro You also can't forget that Kelli O'Hara did this part BEAUTIFULLY. She is a phenomenal actress. Watch her in South Pacific too. She brings me to tears.
How are we suppose to understand the story if the songs are in another language? & plz dont say by body language and mannerism. This show is good, but is HIGHLY overwritten.
I'm sorry to say it, but I think you answered your own question. Granted, it's not the answer you want, but it's the right one. You can't tell me you don't know exactly what's going on without knowing the meaning of every single word.
@wiz337 you're supposed to feel like Clara and Margaret do, completely lost and confused. They didnt write it with people speaking english but heavy italian accents because that's not authentic
I was going to say "The lyricist is incredibly intelligent!", but I'm not going to say that, because (as said in The Great Gatsby), I only think that he knows a lot because he knows different things than me. I'll suffice it to say that he's incredibly talented to write songs in two languages for the same musical and make them mesh so well :)

Katie was great. Slightly off note at the end = off night -- it's live; it happens. She's a wonderful singer. Yup!
