It was not a secret airbase. In fact Fliegerhorst Venlo was de biggest and most modern airfield in The Netherlands at that time and it was the biggest airfield of the German Luftwaffe. Many citizens of Venlo worked there. There are two books from Jan Derix, "Vliegveld Venlo" part one and part two, ISBN 90-73401-01-1 and ISBN 90-73401-02-X
By the end of 44 Fliegerhorst was bombed flat and abonded by the germans. Some b17 were stations at venlo early 45 for a brief period. Today only the contolltower remains on the dutch side. need more info?
for the record, Airfield venlo "fliegerhorst was one of the biggest airfields out of germany during WWII. It did house the heinkel 176 rockert plane during the later stages of the war. Nachjagdgeschwader 1 was stationed at venlo, They did a lot of damage to the bombers going in at night in Germany. In the later stages they were also involved in daylight interceptions.
alanbukuk this hanger wold have been pretty hard to see from the air, there wouldnt be much of a shadow no matter what direction the sun was in.
i wonder what was housed in this hanger? the germans usually didnt put fighters (except the ME262) in hangers, and i thing fitting an HE111 in from nose to tail would be a tight fit...interesting.
@wildchild77x The Fliegerhorst Venlo, was the home of a few nachtjagt squadrons. I have seen some interviews with a couple german of pilots that flew from there. And they mostly flew in the Messerschmit BF-110. I image 2 or 3 BF-110s could fit in these hangers.
