  • The age-old question, does D&D make you insane or do insane people play D&D? The real answer is that watching Mazes and Monsters makes you insane.

  • I have never found the gorvil in any Monster Manual.

  • 1d4 and whatever bonus Tom had.

  • Oh dear God! D&D caused a college student to stab a mugger in self-defense! When will the senseless violence stop!? Will TSR and Wizards of the Coast never stop to think of the well-being of these poor, innocent and impressionable twenty-something year olds!?

...well, that's what I took from the movie anyways.

  • This movie was the Reefer Madness of RPG. It was nothing more than an alarmist diatribe against something parents thought made already-crazy kids kill themselves.

  • Pocket knife - 1d6 damage

  • LOL, he killed a guy by accident. At least he wasn't going crazy after playing a videogame just a stupid boardgame

  • He definitely rolled a 16 in dexterity to avert them. But couldn't roll anything above a 7 to climb over the fence(A 7 would be him making it over the fence but have been shit on by Lord of the Eagles causing him to slip and fall as he was climbing over, breaking a leg) After that he would have rolled atleast a 14 on that attack. (1EAD&D)

  • i love the line "These are my spells. I guard them with my life." Who would want to mug a nutcase that says that? lol

  • @heiamll LMAO I was thinking the same thing XD

  • Oh, please. Those are at best Level 2 Thieves who somehow got their hands on a Polymorph Self scroll.

  • i still dream of a live action adaptation of Hobgoblin which i found a bit more enjoyable, tho i will say the movie departs drastically from the book at points

  • Did anyone know that the real guy, James Dallas Egbert the III, was on drugs? Not, Cleric "Hey let's blame D&D"

Rogue "But he was on drugs..."

Cleric "That's okay, we need an attack campaign on that Satanic game."

Rogue "Can we make money by selling it?"

Cleric "Sure well call it Dungeons & Dragons: Satan's Game."

Rogue: "We can't do that, Dr. Demento already pegged that one, besides TSR might sue us."

Cleric: "Then let's turn TSR into a toy company instead!"

    BOOOF!

  • @J3R4MI4H also dr. demento was miss-credited with the d&d: satan's game you mention that is the dead alewives a comedy troupe

  • @raz0rbladeapolo Really? For some reason I've always associated Dr. Demento with those soundbites.

    Far out!

Well, Dungeons & Dragons is a far out game!

  • @insomnia1388 It also failed miserably, making it a fun movie to watch for gamers, since this was the best attack they could come up with. They must have rolled a botch on their "Make Movie Scare Gamers Away" roll, and instead made it fun and funny to watch! lol

  • jeez the idoits in the 80s! I mean come on, the whole situation is like that one guy who listened to helter skelter and thought it ment killing people! The song is still good and it took one guy to make everybody hate it. "Oh yes the kid went down the wrong path. He played dungeons and dragons, that must be the whole reason!" It's like saying if a man who used tissues alot before suddenly kills people, people will stop using tissues!

  • Imagine the body count if Hanks had been playing Call of Cthulhu

  • @Xerock Or, even worse, WH40k

  • So, what's wrong with stabbing muggers, again? Oh, yeah, it's wrong if you hallucinate that they're minotaurs. Got it.

  • Now, in real life, the muggers wouldn't have bothered to chase him, and after figuring out the guy's crazy AND has a knife, they'd figure whatever he has on him in terms of money or drugs wouldn't be worth the risk and they'd back away. Muggers might be stupid, but they're not THAT stupid.

  • My thoughts exactly

  • whats the fucking problem?

  • I love how hard Tom was acting. He really acts very hard.

  • Mazes and Monsters makes you stab muggers? Awesome.

  • Wow, when I saw him running, all I could think of was "Run Forrest, Run!"...he has such a stiff unnatural running gait.

  • I thought the same lol... immediatly the name Forrest came to my mind! and yes...he ruuuuuuuuunssss! I love him!

  • it is available at most wal marts in the $5 dvd "dump bins", and its just a decent movie that is aan insanely inaacurate attack on D&D as most books written like this were, the systems in all the movies and books are horrible and propose no real logic also check out the book hobgoblin by John Coyne, btw this is based on a Ronna jaffre book of the same name

  • @raz0rbladeapolo It's also based on a book that's based on the Media hype, not the actualy events! lol

Awesome movie, makes me wanna play D&D...

  • @J3R4MI4H okay where did i not state that, it was one of many books attacking roleplaying, some came before the steam tunnel events, some after, jaffre based her book on what the media reported, which most people took at face value , when what actually happened was a private investigator said james "might" have went into the tunnels to LARP but the media reported that as fact instead of a theory, but i never said it was based on actual events, i said it was based on the book

  • @raz0rbladeapolo Yeah there were two books, the private investigator made out called "The Dungeon Master", and some reporter made "Mazes and Monsters". The latter being complete bull, and the former being as accurate as you can get in regards to the actual events. Hehee, we just found a copy of the movie and watched it with our AD&D group and they loved it! We thought the LARP scene in the cave was the best.

  • Gotta find that film.

  • this is the funniest clip i have seen all year! ha ha haha ha hah ha !!!

  • Hmm, you could argue that the RPGs helped him to defend himself, rather than become just another victim. If they're trying to convince us that RPGs are bad, this was not the best example.

  • yeah and besides he defended himself against muggers who would also beat the crap out of him after finding RPG things they would find useless.

  • Run Forrest!

  • Two-handed stabbing is how it's done, man

  • Well of course he uses two hands to stab. His strength bonus gets a multiplier of 1.5 that way.

  • But since it's a light weapon wouldn't it just be a 1.0 multiplier instead.

  • Maybe he uses house rules? It's impossible to say with those crazy LARPers anyway.

  • Haha. Good point. House rules would exlain that.

  • @icemanlonewolf Hey that ain't RPGA! I guess the crazies don't play at tournaments...

  • I love the music. New York is no place for a cleric!

  • LOL

  • @InformationPollution But it has plenty of Rogues! HA!

  • Damn, I wish Tom would go back to the good old days of comedy movies.

  • See through the powers of D&D you can learn to defend yourself from some of the worst of scum. Leather donning muggers.

  • the scare for parents in the early 80's, us kids were loosing or mental state getting into D+D haha!I miss those days

  • @theplasteredgaul BANDIT'S RANDOM ENCOUNTER!

Bandits HD: 1, Thac0: 20, AC: 8, Armor: Leather, Damage: Dagger 1d4, XP: 15 each

...Hey do you think there's a random encounter for getting an Academy Award? And on that not, you think the Academy Award is worth 300 gp? And if you steal an Academy Award and you're a rogue, do you get 600 xp?

  • my goodness.

    SHIT

    GTFO

  • EIGHTIES COME BACK!

Also, I didn't know that playing D&D makes you a skilled fighter...

  • "these are my spells, i guard them with my life.." i lol'ed

  • The Gorvill was played by Kevin Peter Hall;also known as The Predator.

  • So Tom imagined that his assailent was wearing the worst monster costume in the history of man?

  • d&d teaches you how to kick serious ass

  • HELLS YEAH!

  • I didn't know the "Gorville" Monster hung out in the Barrio.

  • The mugger wasn't armed with any weapons?

  • these are my spells and i gaurd them with my life...

  • Hey, he wasn't kidding when he said he guards his spells with his life.

  • I'd stab someone who tried to take my stuff too.

  • +5 pocket knife of slaying!

  • I love the way he fights. Fucking hilarious.

  • is there any way you can post a clip with like 30 seconds more added to the end? The part I always remember from this movie is him crying "there's blood on my knife!"to someone on the phone. You saw he was looking at the telephone right when this clip ended, so I dont think it happens much later on.

  • Hey man. That moment is in another clip I posted, Tom Hanks' Phone Booth Scene.

I ganked these clips from a fansite. I could rent the movie and Handbrake anything you want, but that bit's already in another one of my movies.

  • Just found it, thanks!

  • tom hanks gets a natural 20 on all awesome checks

  • I guess the mugger had low HP

  • Thank you so much for this. Thank you thank you thank you. I haven't seen this movie in years.
