@brace110 funny thing is, that's how it began. It began as "negro history week", then eventually transformed into a month. It's not "compensation", it's a time for cultural understanding, and a response to the biased Eurocentric view of history in the U.S. They NEVER focus on history from the perspectives of the ethnic minorities in schools. That's why there's Native American heritage month, Asian American heritage month, Latin American/Hispanic heritage month, etc.

The months exist because there is little to no good representation of the experience of non-whites in this country, as well as others. There's a constant need for affirmation because so many wrongs haven't been righted, and white privilege still exists.

And there really isn't much one can "do" save ope dialogue and discussion about these sensitive topics. But the problem is that there are still raw, angry feelings, from whites and non-whites. And of course there's "representation" of whites in the US. White Americans have dominance in the country by default. Just look at the media.

(I'm not from the USA) I hope that black people feel "compensated" pretty soon though, and I hope white's don't get all the advantages, this should have been dealt with long ago, Why is this still an issue in the USA? Do black people actually get treated like less and given fewer chances?

@brace110 Of course great strides have been made for equality. But there is STILL a lot of work to be done. Racist sentiments from the 20th Century, during the times of segregation and Jim Crow laws which kept blacks and whites at a clear distance, have not gone away. This discrimination has just changed shape. It's more subtle now. And it's not just black people. It's discrimination on all sides. But Blacks, Native Americans, Hispanics, Jews and other groups have felt the worst of it.
