I'm sorry for your trouble. I must say your experience is not typical. Unfortunately you were hooked up with a slum landlord who runs an assembly line of tenants and home stay students to pay the rent. They exist everywhere--even Japan.
Other home stay students have reported very positive experiences with host families so I hope this doesn't dissuade you from trying again.
:) 賛成です. Even though my 1st semester was bad, I stayed in Japan a total of 3 semesters. I did meet lots of very kind people (men & women). I don't hate Japan and I do think the customer service is way better there. :) The products are also a better quality and people care about their jobs more. I did go through a lot of bad things in Japan (more than most exchange students), but I did make a lot of great memories there and I made a lot of wonderful friends who I'll never forget.
well, i , japanese myself, am really upset about that scum ruined your time and money. Have you reported complain to anywhere? if you dont mind can you tell me the organization name or anything that i can spot them to prevent any more victims?
anyway, unfortunately japans got scums just like anyother countries, im feeling scum ratio is increasing nowadays.
The online site I went through also had lots of really kind host families, they just lived too far away from my school. : ) 気にしないでください。 I know there are lots of good Japanese people. Some of the people really helped me a lot when I was in Japan.
I've also heard of high school home stay families being kind of controlling though. Like my friend stayed at one where they wouldn't let him use his computer or talk to his family (he used the computer at school).
@midori1 i respect your matured mind and peaceful nature. and about home-stay family thing is pretty complicated, familys intention for doing those might be for faster adaptation to japanese environment, but its not good to tell him their intention first. i can tell ya japans got lots of stubborn, narrow sighted people, they are very kind and all but too pushy and lacks communication sometimes (i might be one of them). well, have fun(^_^)
It is disturbing to hear that you had that experience with your host family. But I do give you a LOT of credit for remaining calm and handling the situation.
How horrible of that family to treat you that way. You were in a strange country and knew little Japanese. Why did they even agree to be your host family if they obviously didn't want you there?
God i feel so sorry for you! I don't think i would have been able to handle it if my Japanese host family were like that T_T. What an awful way to start your time in Japan T_T.
shit! you officially scared the crap out of me. I'm studying abroad in Tokyo next fall and I'm going to stay with a host family and I wanted to have the meals included.
should I change my mind now, or is this just a really extreme case?
i did have an extreme case. It depends, if your host family was set up by a school or something you should be good. Also, try talking to them before hand to see if they're ok. Show them pictures of you and your house & if they don't send you any, then I might worry a little. I stayed with someone called Irena in Ueno. But, all the other people i know who have host families here are happy with them. u should be alright
you should be fine then ^_^ Also, Ueno is actually a pretty nice place. I was just kinda around in the back alleys, but there are some nice shopping areas and a really big famous park there
@midori1 when i went to japan, i also stayed in Ueno but I stayed in the Ueno First Hotel. It was pretty good, they had really good service and few of the people there spoke english so that was really helpful. And it was also close to the JR station. =]
Wow...I'm really sorry it had to start out that way. I hope your impression of Japan didn't go down the drain because of this. I would be pissed if TUJ put me in a situation like this. Just started watching your vids so, I'll try to watch more before asking questions that may have been answered. I'm planning to be at TUJ next year.
Anyway, I would just say that 95% of the time, the host families are great, but it is better check out the family first & have a plan of what to do if it is not a good situation. I ignored some off feelings I felt from my family before I came. That said, Many people & my university quickly stepped in to help me when there was a problem & I was out of there after only 3 days & into my own place after 5.
It's definitely not a matter of which country you're in though. All countries have good and bad host families. I've met plenty of wonderful & kind families here in Japan, I just wasn't lucky enough to end up with one. Same in America- 99% of my foreign friends that had host families were placed with very kind ppl who genuinely cared. Only one ended up with a creepy host brother who secretly recorder her in her room (he's in jail now & she's fine).
Haha well...I didn't want to show that all was fine & that I was in a nice safe apartment. In this video I wanted it to be more dark & uncomfortable to kind of match how I felt a little bit. If I was in a bright sunny apartment, it wouldn't match the mood of the story. ^^; yeah, they were bad. But there are a lot of good host families too! I've met some very nice people!
^^ nobody really does at first. That's why you go there. Sure, we'd all studied it, but it's another thing to use it in real life. We all learned from textbooks, but of course natives don't speak like that so it takes a month or so to pick up the natural pattern.

Are there any particular neighborhoods, besides Ueno, that I should stay away from then?
Thanks so much for your help :)

Not to be too critical but a GPS device helps...and of course looking at the map to see where the grocery stores are.

OK, seriously, GPS? Second, the maps on the street are in Kanji & don't say where grocery stores are. ^^;

Yeah GPS, helped me find places easily as some names are in Romaji as well as Kanji. Also the 7elevens are on the Google Map which I used.
