boot time says nothing about the actual performance of a computer. it may take a system more or less time to initialize hardware devices and settings, and the software load on the system will affect the boot time, but for regular use (i.e. real performance) this means nothing.

Just saw an ad for this in Portfolio Magazine.  Is it a netbook? Does it have the same capabilities as a "common" laptop, if you will?

Yep its a netbook, infact a very small one. It has the same specifications, speed and performence as an average laptop, the ONLY difference is really the size and HARD DRIVE space which is greatly reduced.

Also note the battery lasts over 2 times longer then the average laptop...up to 7.5 hours!!

can someone explain to me what that means?

does that have 12gb in one drive or is it more complicated than that, i want this to be easy for my mum to use

it means its 12 GB on 2 drives. Looks like one is an unremovable drive (unremovable in the sense that it isn't easy for the average end user to remove) and then there is a 4 GB SD card, but I may be wrong.

Also, please note that the Linux version comes with 20 GB storage space (and although Linux isn't that easy to use, unless you cripple it like ASUS has done, I would take the extra 8 GB even if it meant a little headache when trying to install some software).

What I'm thinking too. It's definitely much much faster than the "1.6GHz" CPUs some 6-7 years ago - which struggled to run XP. I think it's the improved technology (memory/mainboard etc) of modern CPUs so they process things more efficiently.

It's so fast for booting and stuff because it has no hard disk! x) It has a flash disk, witch is a lot faster for loading.

Yeah but it is better but does have very limited space. I installed XP+SP3+WMP11 etc. on the 4GB drive and now it has taken around 2.5GB. SO leaves me with around 1.5GB for Windows. I made all programs to be installed on the 16GB drive so far so good.

Just an update, I got my eee pc 901 for 3 days now. And it appears that they now have "dual-core" Diamondville Atom CPU in them. My eeepc shows 2 cpu graphs and 2 "1.6ghz atom" cpus under device manager :))))))))

In italy they said 901 will arrive (with 1000 anda 1000H) for the end of august. It's really nice. Now the factor to check are:

-price;

-compatibility with ubuntu (or others) and difficulty to fix it to best;

-how it looks in my hands :-)

One thing you must consider: battery time. Up to 6 hours with the 901 or 2 hours 30 on 900 (and less if you have the 4400mAh battery). The 901 includes new goodies such as bluetooth and, later this year, a one with WiMax.
