So true. I don't see how anyone doesn't get at least a B in this pointless subject. I mean I know nothing about politics and yet I got an A in the politics paper... hmm.
@dadeskr Well I don't do well in it because I do mathematical A-Levels and I'm no good at long writing. And I prefer to sleep for an hour than do the full 2 hour exam.
My 6th form made general studies mandatory for all students. I never went to a class and for my exam, I just doodled all over my paper. I wasn't trying to rebel or anything, I was just so bored! I was studying for 4 REAL A-levels at the time.
Of course a lot of people hate general studies it has random questions they might not know anything about, and haven't been able to practice to regurgitate. We already knew a lot a people have no general knowledge.
I sat my A-level general studeis exam after smoking about a gram and a half of cannabis resin. Still managed to get a B. Eight years later it has never once been of use to me whatsoever
I got an A in General Studies (which has never been useful in any way to me ever, seriously, if you're studying General Studies now, just skip your lessons and go to the pub, you'll learn more important stuff from the pissed guy with his forehead on the bar) and for one of the questions I drew a picture of a pirate driving a submarine.
I did General studies in college and I have to say it was the most pointless and useless course I've ever done. I only chose to try it because there honestly weren't any other subjects that I wanted to try.
I got full marks on As general studies by writing a 4 page essay on how Hitler brought on Cock Fighting and hence the downfall of society: Justin Bieber.
The first letter of every line in my general studies exam spelt out "THIS IS A WASTE OF REVISION TIME". Made the essay fun to do, and I still got an A. Middle class rebellion. Woop.
I got an A in my general studies, my answer about why we shouldn't censor the internet was based entirely around 2 girls 1 cup. I mentioned Cheese in a spray can in every answer, and quoted David Cameron: "I'm never gonna give you up, I'm never gonna let you down", said the prime minister. He then continued: "I'm never gonna run around and desert you".
I'm applying to Uni of Birmingham and Uni of Sheffield, and was pleasantly surprised when I found that they accept General Studies. It's not as useless as people say when it comes to applying for university, but it is a terrible subject and surprisingly hard because you cannot actually learn anything for the exam.
In general studies AS, one question was "Art is pretentious. Is this A) A quesrtion B) An opinion or C) True" Also in one question, I suggested there should be a organisation with a emergency fund for global disasters. It's acronym was G.O.N.A.D.S. I also was in a competition with my friends, we had to see who could use the word Outstanding the most in the test. My friend won with 15 uses of the word. I used it 9 times. I got a B. I was only a few marks off an A. Bloody hell.
The thing is, people always go on about how easy the exam is, but most people don't get an A. I know that that doesn't mean it's not easy (it is) but don't say it's easy if you didn't get an A. It also is worth doing well on it as a bargaining chip for the unis that don't accept it if you're close to your offer, and so that your certificate looks better (I'd rather it said AAAA than AAAC.) In addition, you have to do at least some work, unless you're well read on the history of art.
The people who say it's easy generally mean the questions are all answerable, it doesn't mean they are capable of answering them well. From experience you have to have a good grasp of English and a fair interest in science and current affairs, but not much more. That said it's embarrassing how poorly some of my mates did, When i got 96%, and my essay was about the declining intelligence of exam writers.
@skullythecreator Not true - they only brought it in a couple of year ago, and it's a little bit different to GCSE A*s. For a GCSE A*, you need 90% overall, whereas an A-level A* you need at least 80% overall, and at least 90% on any A2 modules. Doesn't make a huge difference to much unless you're applying to Oxford or Cambridge, who I heard are going to start asking for 2 A*s as of next year.
My A level general studies classes consisted of watching 80s comedy for an hour a week in a class of 3 people. I got an A. It's basically an IQ test with a bit of persuasive essay writing thrown in, and most unis don't even accept it. Pointless.
I can beat you, in my second year of a levels the classes were arranged when I was doing something else, so the teach just said "you don't have to go to them, I'm sure you'll be fine". I not only got an A but also one of those "top 5 marks" letters... the college was pretty embarassed and asked me to lie about the fact I hadn't gone to any classes in the paper.
I had a competition with my mates to get the word "wizard" into our answers. I got 11 mentions and my friend just wrote a story about Merlin's failed protégé. I got an A and he got a B. General studies is worth doing simply for its anecdotal value.
I only have on A-level (C in English, including an A for my coursework), but I was accepted to uni on the standard of my work. Now, I'm a published author and proud of it.
Oh god, the sound at the end literally made me think a huge bee was flying behind my head. I have got to stop being so accustomed to these earphones...
I did general studies purely because it was basically free ucas points for no work. you didnt turn up half the time, and when you did turn up, it was stuff you'd been taught when you were 12 anyway.

@johnsmithbsc Well, I got As and Bs in Chemistry, Biology, Geography and English language, and then a D and an E in General studies. Still not sure what went wrong - or why I even give a fuck.
Wrote one of my exams initiating INTERCAL. started a few questions with ''me and my mate Dave think that.'' Made an 9/11 joke. if i get a U in that paper i'm paying for it to be remarked, recalling it with commentary and framing it.
Most universities don't even count General Studies anymore. I dropped it in the second year of A level because it was eating up the time I could be spending doing my REAL subjects.
@ohyeahhoneysheband yup, the universities look at your GCSE (exams you take when you're about 15/16) results and your predicted grades then give you an offer. For example an A in english, B in history and C in georgraphy. If you get these results at A-level (end of school exams) then you get in... in theory :)
@ohyeahhoneysheband basically we have a system of progressive work which counts towards a partial grade, and then we have a finalised test at the end of it all which counts as another partial grade.
Then they take both partial grades to calculate your final result and the university places are awarded on how much wealth your family has
i did AS general studies a year early. we took the piss in the exam and i pretended to be a prejudiced toff who could only talk about oxford. im proud of the U i achieved.
General studies are there for schools to make more money. They get paid for each exam taken and therefore they will make a much bigger net profit of GS than they would on a subject they actually have to teach. Clever really.
The funniest thing is that this one literally is true. I didn't have any lessons in General Studies, didn't revise at all, didn't even look at the syllabus... Just walked into the exam and got an A.
@rlinfinity Even 10 years ago you didn't need to do mechanics 6 to do the full course anyway, and strange that there's nothing on papers from 10 years ago that isn't on the syllabus now.Out of all the A levels, maths has stayed more constant than any of the others in recent years. You can pick nearly any other subject and a student from 10 years ago wouldn't be able to pass the exam now and vice versa, but in maths it has stayed so constant that a student getting an A would get one in 2000 and 2011.
@9hello123 But u did if you were doing Further Maths. A Level Maths is something that real maths students just do in an year anyway. and then do further maths in the second year. For engineering, physics, and especially for mathematics itself, A Level maths doesn't quite cut it if you're going to a good university. You need Further Maths.
I got an A in general studies and as it was my third 'A', it got me a Scholarship of £1,000 per year at one of the Top 10 Universities in England. Without General Studies I wouldn't have even got in.
Years ago I was forced to take general studies against my will because I knew it was a waste of time. I made a comment to this effect to the teacher and she took me out of the class and gave me a dressing down in the hallway that made me cry.
@Markell1991 I have absolutely no idea about Sheffield and I'm not about to go send off for a prospectus for a university I have no interest in going to for the sake of arguing with someone, but I have a physics prospectus for Birmingham right next to me and it specifically says requirements AAA, not accepting General Studies or Critical Thinking.
Perhaps for the crap courses like hair dressing it might allow General Studies.
@9hello123 Are you applying for 2012/13? For 2011/12 it is BBB for Ancient History and Classical Archaeology accepting General Studies, the same with Sheffield. You could just check online, you wouldn't have to order one...
@9hello123 - I started a Physics degree at the Uni of B'ham in 1995 and at the time my General Studies A level was taken into account in the offer (ABB).
@yetanothergoodyfan I completely agree it was an utter waste of time, 2 hours of each week on that crap, being taught about public transport and environmental costs by a barely qualified sociology teacher, who tried to argue to me that transporting goods by canal is more cost effective, faster and environentally sound that a train. Also I was told not to delve too deep into economics in essays for it.
@babyminnow We got it taught by all kinds, physics, business, drama, all sorts, if i'd cocked up my maths exam I'd have got into uni on it but the taught lessons were a waste of time I could've spent as another study period. I trust you understand that study means drinking and rock band xD
@JayTheCorrupt Being an English Lit geek study for me meant sitting under the blossom trees and reading poetry that wasn't on the syllabus (oh how dreadfully irresponsible of me!) during study periods. I opted to keep all my AS subjects on for the second year despite the head-master disapproving of this and wanting me to do General Studies. He just made no sense. He was basically Basil Fawlty from Fawlty Towers.
@yetanothergoodyfan in my school its called critical thinking, i was gonna take it but i found out that universities literally don't give a shit about it lol
@SilverShadows88 but i bet they're both as equally useles and shit, my friends took them cos it was an extra AS-level but it turned out no one cares if u take it or not. big waste of time imo
ive just one my a levels but never heard of "general studies" is this a subject or a joke????? never heard of it...

I went to 3 lessons, taught by a P.E. teacher who told us that gay people can't donate blood, did no revision and still got an A.

I managed to write on the General Studies exam today:
1. Gaddafi - 32 times
2. Bin Laden - 44 times
3. All the countries of Asia
Now to wait and see if I can still get an A.

General studies are there for schools to make more money. They get paid for each exam taken and therefore they will make a much bigger net profit of GS than they would on a subject they actually have to teach. Clever really.

Bollocks to it, it don't madda.
TheHawthorneAbendsen 10 months ago
Sheffield accepts it, and it helped my case to get into York when I missed the grades, but had an A in general studies.
inthelifeofAJ 11 months ago
The funniest thing is that this one literally is true. I didn't have any lessons in General Studies, didn't revise at all, didn't even look at the syllabus... Just walked into the exam and got an A.

Remember a time when A Levels meant having to study things like Lagrangian Mechanics. Sigh...
rlinfinity 1 year ago 2
@rlinfinity You still would... if you were taking the relevant subject....
Rorxz 10 months ago
@Rorxz Only if you're doing Maths and Further Maths, and even that has been dumbed down, especially as of 2004-2005 (circa).
rlinfinity 10 months ago
@rlinfinity Maths A level papers from 2000 are exactly the same as maths A levels now.
9hello123 9 months ago
@9hello123 No they're not. I've taught A Level maths. Pure maths got easier in general and they did away with Mechanics 6 entirely.
rlinfinity 9 months ago
@9hello123 And to top it off the even older papers are even harder. Especially the ones pre-modular A Levels.
rlinfinity 9 months ago
@rlinfinity Even 10 years ago you didn't need to do mechanics 6 to do the full course anyway, and strange that there's nothing on papers from 10 years ago that isn't on the syllabus now.Out of all the A levels, maths has stayed more constant than any of the others in recent years. You can pick nearly any other subject and a student from 10 years ago wouldn't be able to pass the exam now and vice versa, but in maths it has stayed so constant that a student getting an A would get one in 2000 and 2011.
9hello123 9 months ago
@9hello123 But u did if you were doing Further Maths. A Level Maths is something that real maths students just do in an year anyway. and then do further maths in the second year. For engineering, physics, and especially for mathematics itself, A Level maths doesn't quite cut it if you're going to a good university. You need Further Maths.

I got an A in general studies and as it was my third 'A', it got me a Scholarship of £1,000 per year at one of the Top 10 Universities in England. Without General Studies I wouldn't have even got in.

inb4 everyone realises college's have courses linked to it, and general studies exams have questions aswell as essays..
Emberplate 1 year ago
Years ago I was forced to take general studies against my will because I knew it was a waste of time. I made a comment to this effect to the teacher and she took me out of the class and gave me a dressing down in the hallway that made me cry.
I hope the bitch rots back in Australia.

i have to do it as of monday. yuk. bollocks to it
livstar93 1 year ago
YES! Everything they say on that video is so true.
In fact, most schools only enforce GS because they get paid per student they put in for it.
It's the biggest waste of time ever invented by our British education system, and that's saying something.

@yetanothergoodyfan Tell that to the people whose universities accept General Studies.
Markell1991 9 months ago
@Markell1991 The universities that accept general studies accept knowing how to walk.
9hello123 9 months ago 4
@9hello123 So does Birmingham and Sheffield count as that?
Markell1991 9 months ago
@Markell1991 I have absolutely no idea about Sheffield and I'm not about to go send off for a prospectus for a university I have no interest in going to for the sake of arguing with someone, but I have a physics prospectus for Birmingham right next to me and it specifically says requirements AAA, not accepting General Studies or Critical Thinking.
Perhaps for the crap courses like hair dressing it might allow General Studies.
9hello123 9 months ago
@9hello123 Are you applying for 2012/13? For 2011/12 it is BBB for Ancient History and Classical Archaeology accepting General Studies, the same with Sheffield. You could just check online, you wouldn't have to order one...
Markell1991 9 months ago
@9hello123 - I started a Physics degree at the Uni of B'ham in 1995 and at the time my General Studies A level was taken into account in the offer (ABB).
alexmc69 9 months ago
@yetanothergoodyfan I completely agree it was an utter waste of time, 2 hours of each week on that crap, being taught about public transport and environmental costs by a barely qualified sociology teacher, who tried to argue to me that transporting goods by canal is more cost effective, faster and environentally sound that a train. Also I was told not to delve too deep into economics in essays for it.
JayTheCorrupt 6 months ago
@JayTheCorrupt I just refused to do it. And the sociology teachers all refused to teach it. Win all round really.
babyminnow 5 months ago
@babyminnow We got it taught by all kinds, physics, business, drama, all sorts, if i'd cocked up my maths exam I'd have got into uni on it but the taught lessons were a waste of time I could've spent as another study period. I trust you understand that study means drinking and rock band xD
JayTheCorrupt 5 months ago
@JayTheCorrupt Being an English Lit geek study for me meant sitting under the blossom trees and reading poetry that wasn't on the syllabus (oh how dreadfully irresponsible of me!) during study periods. I opted to keep all my AS subjects on for the second year despite the head-master disapproving of this and wanting me to do General Studies. He just made no sense. He was basically Basil Fawlty from Fawlty Towers.
babyminnow 5 months ago
@yetanothergoodyfan in my school its called critical thinking, i was gonna take it but i found out that universities literally don't give a shit about it lol
RelativelyHostile1 5 months ago
@RelativelyHostile1 Critical thinking is different to general studies. I took both.
SilverShadows88 5 months ago
@SilverShadows88 but i bet they're both as equally useles and shit, my friends took them cos it was an extra AS-level but it turned out no one cares if u take it or not. big waste of time imo
