  • This book should be made into an entire movie starting with this. This would be the perfect Fresh bit of Sci fi movie that is needed in Hollywood these days. We sci fi geeks are drowning in rehash, reboots and remakes. We need an Aurthur C. Clarke movie. WE NEED RAMA!!!

  • There should have been 3 doors, The ramans do everything in three ;).

But a very good project, very professional. I hope freeman and fincher do continue with the real movie project.

  • "Everything happened in less than a second. In a soundless concussion of light, dawn burst upon Rama."

  • I think the sound of their breathing is a bit too prominent when they enter, otherwise very awesome!!

  • if your professor didnt give you an 300% on this he has no soul

  • @devildogLS I got 91%, which I was quite happy with. :)

  • ....my god it's full of stars!

  • @Vaesyr Quote: Dave Bowman, 2001 a space odyssey.

  • I was blown away by the video when I first saw it. With the edition of your "soundscape" it is STUPENDOUS ! Terrific work. When I heard the final word "Everything" I literally got chills up my spine. Thanks a lot for this

  • Amazing. That is all.

  • There should be no gravity where that man is.

  • Beautiful video much better and professional than it could be expected from a student. I'm pretty sure about that you will get kudos soon and go very far in the visual multimedia designing ;)

Anyway, the book is also fascinating too except the conception of the 'artificial gravitation' made by rotating of Rama. (according to the first law of motion due to Newton none of bodies could be took effect of g-force in a rotating cylinder unless it's affixed to the inner surface strongly)

  • Arthur C. Clarke would love this!!!

  • It was great, but I have a little problem with it. According the book at the centerline of the cylinder there is no gravity. Then how they can walk there?

  • @zemei Magnetic shoes? I don't think A.C. ever mentions that, but he is not the kind of writer that puts many technical details into his stories.

    Anyhow, great video!

  • Fantastic! Loved the book and to say this does it justice is a huge understatement. Bravo!

  • The visuals in this film were amazing. The sound was very well done too. Great job!

  • 1st book: 5stars

2nd book: a peace of shizzle!!!

why wont steven spielburg make this into an actual movie?

  • don't compare it to Kubrick, please! light years!

  • OuTsTaNdiNG

  • I just read the book this is awesome

  • Nice work Philly....

  • 2001: A Space Odyssey all over again.

  • I read this novel eons ago.

Too bad I did not see the "spider bots". I imagined Rama as an ovoid.

    This rendition is way cooler.

  • Nice work

  • gorgeous

  • Hi Folks,

Thanks for all the kind comments. This was my final project for my year in the Vancouver Film School Sound Design program. The amazing visuals were produced by Aaron Ross in New York in 2001, and he was kind enough to give me permission to use his film.

It was an absolute blast recording, editing, scoring and mixing this film, and VFS taught me everything I needed to know in order to get it just right. I'm honoured to be on the official VFS channel!

  • @Philsy1971 hey i'm very interested in going there in two years time since i'm still in high school and i want to do the sound design program. as of right now i do music production and my own hobby type of thing and im using soundtrack pro in logic studio for mac. Was this school hard to get into or like do u think you could give me a couple tips? if so that would be awesome!

  • @nodnarbewol if we can help with any information at all, please do let us know.

    Thanks

  • I want to see the rest!!!! :)

  • ditto!!

  • Seconded.

  • I see many elements and inspiration from Kubrick's 2001, bur the video overall is amazing

  • Video is awesome!

The novel was great, I got vertigo when reading the part where they were climbing down the very long ladder... :-)

    5*****

  • Incredible. Very professional and amazing directing. I love everything about it. Realistically speaking I do not believe we would send a team of live crew through Rama first. If anything there would at least be robotic surveyors but it seems this was modeled after a novel.

While I can't tell how authentic it is from not having read the book, I can say this was at the very least very suspenseful and looked brilliant.

  • I read the novel many years ago. A very enjoyable and thoughtful story. Well done with this video!

  • I want more. Don't leave me hanging from the cliff, especially since this is probably all there will be of Rendezvous with Rama

  • i saw this on openfilm today, wotta nice surprise to see it again here! :-) 5 stars

  • Tube from Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home anyone?

  • Actually, the probe from Star Trek IV was modeled after Rama.

  • well the book is from 73...thays how it was described...as a cylinder

  • WOW GREAT!

  • Yes Very Awesome

  • Awesome!

  • Any plans on perusing to making this a full length film after you graduate?

  • i guess he's in his last year ? :D

allmost looks like a real film.

  • BEYOND AWESOME !!! EPIC !!! :D

Aaron Rose the actor from gossip girl?!?! ROFL!

  • Very nice indeed.

  • epic

  • MEGA FREAKIN AWESOME!

  • ORGASM IN MY PANTS

  • mmm i shouldnt be a person to be judgemental on the visuals as i myself would not be able to accomplish such visuals yet, but the lighting, shadows, and materials looked unrealistic and very game like 3d. Just saying

  • Compare to the original short (done in 2001!) linked in the info bar.

Myself, I prefer the original audio track; I find this dialog "B" movie corny, and I thought it was silly that more breathing sounds were added as more astronauts appeared on screen.

But I do agree that I would love to see Rama given a proper film adaptation.

  • Amazing.

    This video has been defined.

  • SOOOOOO cool

  • top marks, great plot, and effects

  • forgot to say fantastic job on the trailer real talent

  • this is based on the first book and the owners of the film rights have been sitting on this for a long time (mogan freemans production team) this would be an incredible series on tv, as a movie just cant give do it justice.

  • that would make an absolutely amazing movie. VFS should fund this to be a movie.

  • 1] LOVED IT

2] I don.t remember the book, but I think it is not accurate... Weren.t there some a-bombs shot at Rama? Less people on board?

  • Definately needs to be worked on as a full length! Bravo.

  • The sounds were great, very convincing. The visuals also delivered the story extremely well. This is great; make a short film! (Or even a full length movie!)

  • Awesome interpretation of Arthur C. Clarke's novel but sadly too short. I would give my left kidney to see an actual film adaptation of this book. Great job on the sound.

  • Ahhh, so THAT'S what it is? Something tells me if I like the movie I will enjoy the book much better. ;)

  • AMAZINGGGGG... the most interesting and enticing story so far.... well done....

  • That was unreal all around

  • Very professional. Well done

  • something I would definetly buy if there was a full lenght movie ^^ Very good work on this one

  • Impressive!

  • Green with envy.

  • just..WOW. If they make a full length film, I will most certainly watch.

  • nice

  • Awesomeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • nicely done on all aspects. this would be a pretty cool short film i'd like to see in it's entirety if it ever gets that far. lol

  • God I love this kind of things!!!

  • does youtube support 5.1?

although this still sounds amazing with a stereo headset.

  • @Protoworks I dont think it does...

  • It does, I have 5.1 speakers and I can hear it using the center and rear on some videos.

In case people didn't know, VHS only did the sound for this, not the imagery.

    It's still awesome though.

  • Exactly the opposite, they did all the visuals and none of the audio. Learn to read

  • uuh no Reijerkolle, they did the audio not the visuals..

  • Aaron Ross did the visuals for this epic short.

  • ....maybe YOU should learn to read

Anyway, it was great, I think a bit more of emphasis on the "everything" would've made it better thou. Oh and, as a sidenote, there is no sound in space ;p

  • VFS Sound Design for Visual Media program.

    SOUND DESIGN.

VHS did the SOUND for this awesome, already existing video.

Who needs to learn how to read?
