@WannaTradePants i know! it's puzzled me since i was little; this short has the look of a season 3-ish episode, but then they reverted back to the horrible, choppy animation when season 1 came. then again, it could probably be due to time constraints and the amount of effort required to make 20-ish minutes as opposed to 2...

Well, making the adjustment from 1-minute shorts to half-hour shows was a huge leap. A million more things had to be managed and coordinated, and always long-distance, since unfortunately most producers are too cheap to have anything animated in the US. Between all the logistics and the inexperience of the crew (Groening and James L. Brooks had never produced an animated program before), it's no wonder the first season animation was so patchy and inconsistent.

Yeah, and it's not just in the stiff movement. They've drifted further and further away from Groening's actual drawing style. If you notice, random background figures used to be much cartoonier and closer to something Groening would come up with. But now, every incidental character or random background person looks much more "straight." All the quirkiness is gone from the show's look. Why any designers would willfully impose this one themselves, I don't know.

Ain't nothing "old-fashioned" about fluid movement. It's just that for whatever reason the creators gradually stripped down the animation so that it's as stiff and rigid as possible. I can't imagine how it could possibly be any fun to work on a show where you're not allowed to take advantage of those wonderfully bulgy, rubbery character designs, and have to just move them through space like cardboard cutouts. Family Guy is even worse----they're made out of solid rock.
