rafael was givin advantages for getting to that position, so why wouldnt telles get points for reversing the position from bottom to top. thats a sweep
I could be wrong(and i probably am) but i always thought turtle was considered "full guard" in most tournaments, even thought its a different position all together
As for as street defense go, balling up in the fetal (turtle) position might not "win" you any fights Van Dam style, but it is an instinctual way of survival. Nobody has to be taught it, just gotta be out classed/sized and hit a few times. It protects your face and vital organs (not stabs of course) and generally signifies to your attacker that you don't want none, so it's good protection for ego based fights. Unless your name is Eduardo Telles. Then the attacker is just plain screwed. :)
Turtle is now considered a type of guard. Makes since to, because you go there to prevent passes. Just think of it as the openest of the open guards. The top guy has a lot less control over you than he would in side-mount, and you have all the same options as you would in any other guard: sweep, submit, switch to a different guard, or get back-up. Just a calculated risk like any other technique in fighting.
The refs recognize it's a controlled sweep that telles does on a regular basis from the turtle.. Why not give him the points? he did establish side control as well after.
I thought sweep was from guard or half guard? Is turtling up in front of your opponent considered having him in your guard? Not trying to be a dick, I am just wondering.
According to the IBJJF it's now not considered guard and reversals from that position aren't considered sweeps. I dont know if Grappler's Quest changed their rules to match.
I thought L did a great jobs of finding openings in the turtle. Shows where a good wrestling base can make things tough on anybody

3:02 why the hell is lavato putting his arms in the air like telles didn't just sweep him and get side control.

Because Grappler's Quest rules state that sweeps must be from the Half Guard or Full Guard, not from Turtle.

I like his game. It wouldn't really work in a street context, but he just goes with what's offered, not obsessing about position.
nerraw2b 3 years ago
why it wouldnt work? he has good takedowns and top control. ofcourse he wouldnt use turtle in street fight.
5amura1Jack 3 years ago
Turtle strategy. The rest of his technique is applicable, from what I've seen.
nerraw2b 3 years ago
why? Eduardo established side contol..

i think bad call from the ref to give the second 2 points.
