I remember being about 5, sneaking into our basement in the middle of the night to watch The Hobbit for the first time. Wrapped in a blanket in front of the TV, with all the lights off, I was captivated. Then those drums started, and the ponies got stolen; by the time the song finished I had the blanket up over my head and my whole body covered, but I couldn't stop watching. O-O
The Goblins were frightening, but I wasn't totally scared... yet. Bilbo and I still hadn't run into Gollum.
Swish, smack! Whip crack! Smash, grab! Pinch, nab! You go, my lad! Ho, ho! my lad! The black crack! the back crack! The black crack! the back crack! Down down to Goblin-town Down down to Goblin-town Down down to Goblin-town You go, my lad! Ho, ho! my lad! Goblins quaff, and Goblins beat Goblins laugh, and Goblins bleat Batter, jabber, whip, and taver hoooooo! Below, my lad! Ho, ho! my lad! The black crack! the back crack! The black crack! the back crack! Down down to Goblin-town!!!
It's been a while since I've watched South Park, so could somebody tell me what's with all the references to it in the comments? I'm assuming they did some sort of parody of this, but I'm curious to hear the details.
@WatermelonRat The song was played during an episode with the lyrics changed to reflect the epic duel between an evil gossiping rat and a heroic one recently escaped from the sphincter of a teacher's kinky partner. The songs "Frodo of the Nine Fingers" and "The Greatest Adventure" were also referenced.
Run, Run, the battle's on, Lemmiwinks, Wikileaks, run, run, the battle's on, Go, Lemmiwinks, Stop Wikileaks.
South Park parodying the Hobbit. Lemmiwinks and Bilbo Baggins. Catatafish is Gollum (riddles). Frog King is Ganandorf? Sparrow Prince, I don't know. Maybe the Elf.
I am so glad this has cross posts for South Park. I *knew* I recongnized that song from somehwere and thought it was the 1977 Hobbit but wasn't sure. Now I am!
I spit my food out and nearly choked to death laughing when this music played on South Park. My Mother was the other person to understand why I was laughing so hard. I woke my kids up from coughing so much. Absolutely brilliant old-school reference. They had to of known it would go over 99% of peoples heads. That alone put that episode in "Instant Classic" territory....
As weird as their portrayal of the wood elves was, I grew up with the Rankin/Bass movie and loved it. I watched our copy until it wouldn't play anymore, and now I can't find it anywhere. It make me sad really.
If you listen to just the beat w/o lyrics, it sounds like something MF Doom would rap over. How can I get my hands on this track w/o lyrics!? It's incredibly dark/funky.
I had this when I was 7 or so. 3 LP box set.... 2 with the story and one with the sound track. All I have left is the Soundtrack now..... wish I could find the box!!
This song still gives me chills ever since I heard this as a kid. Eventhough it is not the same as the book, it still makes you scared of the goblins!
omg thank u so much for this! I always wondered what those ughly monsters were singing at 0:16 o_o this is my fave song out of all the songs from this movie!
I had the record and book for The Hobbit and it looked very similar to the picture posted here. I had seen the animated movie and my parents bought me a lot of Peter Pan Book and Record sets. This all brings me back to my childhood memories of playing the record and reading the book and looking at the pictures all at the same time. I miss record books !
I watched this when i was younger, and was just recently reading the book, and when i saw the lyrics to this song in the book i roared laughing and began to sing it.
my dad used to randomly burst out singing this when we would talk about 'The Hobbit' XD and i gotta admit his sings it pretty good..he just can't remeber the lyrics very well XD
I'm fairly certain in the novel the end of the second verse ("Goblins quaff and goblins beat, goblins laugh and goblins bleat...") is actually "Below, my lad, ho ho my lad" not a second rendition of "You go, my lad"
one of my favorite songs out of this movie.... second was "funny little things".... Goblins definitely had the kick ass songs... they sound like pub drinking songs... and now this goblin town song will be stuck in my head for ages.
and i like the overly dramatic goblin king whom enunciates each word differently like a bad shakespeare actor "whoo are theeeeese miserable persons" and then whails out an emotional scream when hearing what the sword was named....
I kinda like the track version better than the movie version. Like, the last "Hoho! My lad"
When they sing it in the movie, it kinda sounds like they only put half the effort into it. It just feels like to me it's just a plain, "hoho! my lad" But here, for me it's "HOHO! My lad!" listen to both versions and tell me what you think. I
@VMB871 It seems to me that the OST version has the music mixed slightly louder than in the movie, but after careful listening I'm pretty sure that the music and vocal tracks are exactly the same between the two. In the OST version, the bass has more of a kick which may be why the "hoho!" feels stronger to you.
@beadden haha certainly :) Besides this was meant to be "scary" as I think, I doubt though that even 3-year olds would be scared away with that... It's too funny to be scary :)
@VMB871 Crush, snap! Whip crack! Smash, grab! Pinch, nab! You go, my lad! Ho, ho! My lad! (The black crack) Down, down, to Goblin Town! You go, my lad! Ho, ho! My lad! Goblins quaff, and Goblins beat! Goblins laugh, and Goblins bleat! Batter, yammer! Whip and Hammer, ho! You go, my lad! Ho, ho! My Lad! Below, my lad! Ho, ho! My lad! (The black crack) Down, down, to Goblin town! You go, my lad! Ho, ho! My lad!
me and my friends in high school were talking about this movie in class and i couldnt believe they had seen it.we got so into talking about the movie and the songs(especially the goblin tunes) we decided right there we needed to start a band wherewe all dressed as orcs and wizards and played these songs.we actually had this and what funny little things down.AND we shall call ourselves GOBLINSTOWN!we never did get around to playing gigs or dressin!i know im lame.it was highschool.i was high!!!!!!
