How many times have I had to deal with my dog (different dogs, different breads) bringing me gifts for my doorstep. (food) dead critters. This would be a welcome gift during hard times. Don't hurt your pets. If the worst happens and you can't feed them, let them go and let nature take it's course. They just may surprise you and feed themselves and you!!
