I first started watching WWWF around the 1977-78 timeframe and Bob Backlund was the first "good guy" champion I remember. But I also remember thinking that he was nowhere near as cool as other guys like Ivan Putski, Rocky Johnson or Superstar Billy Graham... I guess he made it work for half a decade though...
Its funny how everybody's an expert now on wrestling. Back in those days, we thought it was all real, and didn't say things like "he didn't SELL it well", or he "BUMPED wrong". We were so engrossed by the action as well as the drama, that we didn't have these "Ladies of the View" rants! Thanks Vince........... jerkoff.
LOL! @ Bob Backlund crying over his destroyed WWF belt. A true "baby" face :P - It's not like the WWF would'nt give him a new WWF belt or repair it! Backlund is acting like its the end of the world because his belt got damaged. lol!
LMAO! Graham definitely was a better champion than Backlund in the sense that Graham showed off the title as much as possible and Graham told a story about how Backlund chose to wear his robe more than wearing the WWWF title belt, which is an insult considering the title is definitely bigger than all those who have held it.
HaHaHaHa!,..."Aw Gee!",. skaaland:look what he did to your belt!,...comic book guy would have said "worst champion ever!!!...Graham should have held on to that title longer than the promoters let him!,
@RockNRoll628 Hogan was pissed when Henning destroyed his belt. He went on to beat Henning's a**. Henning never got close to another world title match after that.
@styx4ever1963 Yeah - They should have let The Superstar hold the belt for at least 2 yrs.
9 months??
Dumb assed move by Mc Mahon S.R. - they lost so much money in the long run. We HATED Superstar back then (I was10) and we would have paid anything and gone any where to see a 'good guy' kick his but.
They really messed up by not letting Superstar develop into the most arrogant, hated champ in WWF history.
But that's irrelevant - he still is the the best personality ever to be in wrestling.
backlund sucked...mediocre wrestler, horrible promo, underwhelming physique. Hogan or another wrestler of the day would have pulled this off so much better. The key is to show vulnerability and sadness without looking like a whiny puss. Backlund just looked like a kid that got his toy destroyed. What did Vince Sr. see in this guy?
I thin this made bald, kung fu Graham actually look like the most insane, vicious heel ever. He destroyed the world title for God's sake. This act up staged all the wicked stuff he did as the blonde Super Star.
He really needed to do something because his in ring was pretty bad at this time do to drugs, injuries and not being able to practice.
Bob might have over done it, but they never had more heat than this part of their feud.
@praises9700 Wasn't it the match where Swede Hansen was the ref. Backlund had Graham in the chicken wing and was telling Hansen that he was being chocked. Hansen said he submitted. It then led to a "mini feud" between Hansen and Graham.
This was my earliest memory of wrestling soon after I started watching it as a kid. This and when Blackjack Mulligan put the claw on Andre the Giant....when Andre bled, they put that big red X on the screen censoring the blood. I thought it was so cool to watch.
I remember watching this in 1982 as a 10 year old kid. Seeing this kind of emotion from the normally reserved Bob Backlund was quite shocking at that age.
Do you all think this angle made Backlund look weak and lose respect as WWF champion? I mean he went too far weaping. It's kind of like a scene out of Mayberry when Opie get his heart broken and runs home to cry to Andy and Aunt Bea. Bob went too far!
I guess they were trying to portray it as the belt meaning everything to Backlund. But you're right, they took it too far. They could have used this to turn him into the crazy Bob Backlund of the mid 90s. That would have been better than him crying over the belt.
@VolumedMusicMan Funny cuz Hogan would do the same thing! Anytime someone betrayed him or when he lost the title to Andre he'd just ball like a little bald baby.
wow billy sure had shrunk up by then. I am glad this was posted because i did not remember how billy was able to just destroy bob's belt without him at least trying to stop him. i forgot billy sucker punched him and then blasted him with the belt. thanks !!
"There's his belt!!!! There's his belt!!!" This CLASSIC stuff. The whole thing when SSBG came back as the karate guy was genuis... NOT! Guy was a legend for sure. WAY ahead of his time.
Graham was a total drugged out mess here. Although I loved when anyone jumped and took out Backlund. It's amazing the WWF ran with him for over 5 years straight!
can some one find the video where Buddy Rogers interviewed Backlund where Backlund told Rogers that Superstar that "he was going to pay for busting up the belt with his blood? and also the garden match where Backlund jumped Superstar before the bell rang?
Wow. I totally agree. I was 12 years old when Backlund won the title in 78' and he was so legit to me - even though I loved Billy Graham then. He played it straight, but "Mr. Backlund" years later was beneath him.
Crybaby Backlund strikes again - with the exception of King Kong Angelo Mosca "spitting" on him this is another wonderful moment. Now though Backlund was a great 'scientific' wrestler- he was boring and no way could compare to Bruno Sammartino
Is it just me, or did Bryan Danielson completely base his entire character (scientific wrestler with a penchant for holds no one else uses) off Backlund?
Backlund was a great scientific wrestler. When the situation warranted, he could also pull something from his arsenal of noogies, wedgies, indian burns and titty-twisters.
Both Sammartino and Backlund have been offerd to be inducted into the WWE HOF several times, both have declined the invition each time. That means they are both too bitter to be placed into the HOF that made each of them truly who they are today, that is their fault not any other persons.
I understand Bruno's reason is he does not like how wrestling is nowadays and the whole steroid feud with Vince McMahon but what is Backlund's reason? I never knew he also refused. Is it also the same reason as Bruno?
Actually I heard Backlund turned it down because he feels he's not officially retired. That is how Jim Ross explained it. He told Ross he wants another run in the WWE/WWF
I still feel Bruno was best but Backlund never got the respect he deserved cause he was WAY better than Ric Flair, I don't care if he was champ 100 times he still lost the belt 100 times!!!Backlund fought everyone and beat everyone including Hogan when Hogan was a bad guy. You know what? I think Backlund could be the best ever!!! You may be right!!! I hated the whole Backlund losing to Diesel thing cause Backlund would have murdered Diesel back in the day!!
