actually, the founder of the cowboys owned the music (not the lyrics) before the cowboys were a team. when GPM and the composer had a falling out he sold them to a guy wanting to bring an expansion team to dallas. GPM had a monopoly on hte south thru his radio network and blocked the team until the cowboys got the rights and traded them back to the skins for admission to the NFL..and thus the rivaly starts before the cowboys even existed. but they never owned the song while the cowboys exsisted
