  • Not much difference between this and holding back a hot QH barrel horse behind arena gates! Have you ever done any barrel racing? Those animals can go really nuts! Thats quite a sport too!

  • This is really amazing :) I would love to have that job, even if i got hurt. To bad I am so darn tall lol.

  • This is racing Ferraris with a mind....or Formula 1, injuries and accidents do happen. Not quite Alice In Wonderland I guess. Ha

  • Please tell me that blindfolding the horse and trying to drag it into the stall wasn't your idea. Gee, the horse is scared, let's simulate a predator situation. That'll help!

  • cool, thanks for the reply! I guess with all sports specific training the horse suffers at some point. Thanks for posting the video..and keep up the good work!

  • Hi there, I just wanted to know what I'm supposed to be seeing here. Don't want to jump in and criticise as I'm sure I'm missing the point. But why aren't the horses prepared a little more so they don't have to freak out in the stalls? Obviously this doesn't show all of the work your doing so Im probably not seeing the whole picture. Thanks! : )

  • They are all prepared for the gates. Almost all of these horse have raced and haven't been a problem until something sets them off. This is what we have to go through to bring them back to racing. It could happen to any horse no matter how prepared.

  • wow, that is SUCH a dangerous job... you got some ka-hoonies. I was trapped in a trailer once with a horse losing her mind.... scary shit... but, it happens SO fast, by the time its over, your going "holy crap, wha?" LOL.... its cool how well the music goes with the video too... super nice track too! do you think some kind of leg dividers would protect the neighbor horse's legs if one goes nuts in the stall? make is soft, so the horse can expand his stance if he has to, but, padded?

  • Thank you So much for sharing this. I own an OTTB and I Always wondered what it was like. Seeing this makes me wonder how my mare handled this. I Love your Videos!

  • They DO NOT pay jockies and barrier attendants enough money!! OMG. A gun to my head wouldn't get me on one of those... What a crazy ass job.

  • Bloody hell! Crazy ass jocks is about right!!

  • I love being in the starting gates, But to work in the starting gates.. i don't think so. Theese people are crazy ! And i respect them so much for what they do! awsome video. You can never practice with out something goes wrong, that is for sure!

It will take me some years before i practice youngies in the starting gates!

  • Paul, I meant to ask at about 3:22 what did the rider do to his hand. He was in gate 5 and I think it was right before you were getting slammed in gate 6???

  • GOOD MUSIC !

  • wow ur job is really dangerous

has any1 died being squished when the horse rears?

  • yes, I'd say so..

  • Hey endo, do you ever watch other trainer video's "horseproblems" from austraila has some interesting stuff.

  • Yes, HP and I share trade secrets every now and again..

  • so cool! and looks dangerous for all! Singapore needs to clone you to train all those horses to love the barrier!

  • haha some of the horses are so chill and natural at going in there, but then some of the poor buggers get so amped! :P Brave, brave people!

  • Long time no see Paul, love the video, you could not pay me enough to get on them babies, training in the gate....Cathy :)

  • Wish I had a guy like you when I was training, cool riders are just too hard to find in racing. You deserve every penny they pay you boy.

  • thanx Paul... "we" don't get an insight or view to your "days at the office" and when "my kids" express interest in becoming a jockey here I can at least offer quite a honestest representation of part of a day's work for their consideration. I really appreciate your work and what you show us :) Derel

  • I always wonder why dont trainers or pre trainers spend more time on barrier training these ponies? Jockeys are so under rated. As a pleasure rider i SO take my hat off to you guys n girls.

Loved the footage of the TB ponies jumping out of the barrier. They are just the most awesomely athletic horses. Beautiful!

  • This is awesome Paul! I have two 2-year-old colts that I am starting for the track right now. I TAPped the stud colt and it made him a lot easier to handle. I also had a trainer request I come out and TAP a filly that wouldn't go in the starting gate and it worked wonders on her. However, I'm glad I didn't see this video first as I may have been a little nervous taking her in there! Ha!

  • Paul is dressed in either pink and silver and a blue hat or in a blue shirt and an orange vest, still with the blue hat - he's in quite a few of the clips 'cept the first few, actually.

Hey Paul - I love how well the music fits!

  • OMG Endo - never a dull moment. Like Julz says take care, we want you around for a long time. Very fitting tune.

  • @buzzterbrown

Thanks for giving that one a 'second motion' Buzz.

You betcha... the Pinksters too good to lose just yet. :~)

  • makes my palms sweat

  • Paul..Just curious..have you put a TAP on any in Singapore yet? Or maybe a half..??

  • cool video ! 5 stars!

  • OMG.... Wel... Uhhmmmm... I wanted to be a jockey when I was younger. But I am actully quite happy I never became one! :-D

  • Awesome Video ! Thanks !

  • Wow...I hope you get serious hazard pay....yikes!!!

  • Thank you for the video. Seeing this sure builds my confidence as a rider. I only do trails on a 14.2 hand horse. A real snooze compared to this, and yet I still have trouble letting go of the horn. Marie 47 yo. Northern California

  • Seeing a LOT of potential for scary accidents in those gates. Be very quick, agile and SMART Paul. We (and the HORSES) want you working for YEARS to come. So STAY SAFE out there.

Very interesting video and THANK YOU for sharing with us all.

FIVE STARS and adding to my FAVES!

Give Dea a ((HUG)) for us from the States. Lucky girlie, she gets to learn and experience so much too.

YAY DEA! Great camera work gentle and brave Dea. You's da BEST. :~)

Good Luck Paul in your new career!

  • Thanks Julz..

  • @endospink

I think that was you on the '196' horse. Patiently helping that horse to relax and find some confidence in those gates. :~)

  • Ohh yes, and be safe in the gates :]

  • Wow thats intense haha

  • Paul..Maybe Japan wasn't so bad...Are you really liking this?? It's cool..but at the same time it really sucks. Ya have to get past those damn gates before you get to ride. You are very brave Master Paul.....I agree with someone who said this makes colt starting look easy. How many horses are you working with and riding everyday? I'm a little worried about you now so please be very safe and enjoy the ride!!

  • Oh Paul..Great seeing you!! You have really been missed. How many horses are you riding everyday. This vid is the real deal..The track we know and love...Please be as safe as you can...this is some rough stuff. Crap...now I'm going to worry....!!!

  • Hi Jen, about 8 per morning..

  • Paul , was that you in gate 6 at 3.31-40 it looks like your style. To me the gates are the most dangerous place in racing. Stay safe my friend !

  • yes Joe..

  • Wow...this makes colt starting look easy...

  • how do u stop or slow down race horses?

  • Redbull..

  • Master Paul--- praytell which one was you??? dont want to assume! :) as usual, perfect song...Dea

  • I'm in the pink most of the time and some orange/blue..

  • kinda figured the pink, think we know your style by now to. the calmer horses give it away!!! nice job sir

  • Pinkies..

  • Great vids as usual... How long does it take to train a horse to the gates?

  • Entirely up to the horse. One took them 12 months, another 8 months but the young ones taught properly from the start can take 30 mins for them to be bombproof

  • Thanks, that was actually very interesting. Now can we have a video of how you solve some of these problems, or is it just practice with each horse till they get used to it?

  • When at first we don't succeed..lol, bit tricky sometimes because what works with one might not work with others so it's a matter of finding the right combination to crack them.

  • -_- Lovely. Thank you for ruining my aspiration to become an excerise rider. Ugh.....

Jk, jk! Glad to have you back, buddy! But I WILL think twice before going to the track again.

  • Ahhh, We have missed you!!

I have a feeling your going to get shit about this...most of the "animal rights" people hate the "real, behind the scene" videos. I love um....been there done that:o) Nice to have you back!

  • that is... scary.

  • 3:12 Sauuuu gaiiil

  • OMG do any of the horses get stuck when they freak out like that? tough job... I wouldnt have the stomach for it knowing what happens in the end :(

  • Is that you in the pink?

  • yes..

  • yes..hard to break the habit..lol

  • scary shit!
