  • I love radiohead in particular this album very much, but this song may just die.

  • dinosaurs roamed the earth!

  • @MichaelKing *Claps* Well spoken! I wish more people could grasp that. But you know, it takes someone like you to shift someone's perspective of understanding, and 'tis for this that I applaud you.

  • art does not dictate meaning. art suggests meaning and the receiver makes up own mind. Open to interpretaion is all good art. not propaganda. I find this song's beauty mostly in the opening and closing harmonies.

  • i always thought it was 'the best you can is giving up'

  • Gotta love that little jazz part at the last 20 seconds.

  • @alterdings

I'd like to hear them do a whole album in that style.

  • Oh this is like the Old Radiohead..:)

  • All Youtube comments/arguments relating to musical opinions stem to the fact that we're trying to find friendship with someone who shares the EXACT same musical taste. Optimistic much?

  • Comment removed

  • let's all just relax and listen to the notes.

  • Being familiar with Radiohead's other discography, I expected this to be a tongue-in-cheek song about who remains optimistic with a woman that clearly hates him, or a sarcastic song by a pessimist and his reaction towards the world. I was incredibly surprised, especially "You can try the best you can, you can try the best you can, the best you can is good enough." This is one of my favorite Radiohead songs and one of the most powerful IMO.

  • @MummyKing999 It's not a man/woman song. GOSH. Why do people always think that way? I'd say 80% of Radiohead's lyrics are NOT that way. So why so many people misunderstand them?

  • @lukeskymac Uh, did I say it was? I'm assuming by man/woman you mean love. And I said I EXPECTED this to be a song about failing but pathetically remaining optimistic when it's useless and it wasn't. Plus that was just an example anyway of remaining optimistic when it's useless to do so. I know Radiohead doesn't have many love songs. I understand their music. You don't understand ME.

  • The ending bit is sooo good, I wish they´d made a hole song out of it

  • I think this is the best song in Kid A. Good album and all, but the band's guitar work was always its greatest strength and this song is where they remember that.

  • ****Nervous, messed up marionette.

Not "And now this messed up millionaire"

  • Morning Bell has more views than this and a few other songs have significantly more views than this. There's a problem with this.

  • Uh...

....I don't really like the Beatles, but I respect them. Wait, isn't this a Radiohead song?

  • @Floydian75 I don't think you've heard the right Beatles...

  • ONE OF THE GREATEST SONGS EVER..

  • 4:20 always gets me! Always!

  • The King of Limbs was nice, but requires some SERIOUSLY GOOD headphones to fully enjoy some of its best tracks (aka Bloom).

I am hoping their next album keeps some of that style but makes it less of a precision affair, some that flows better. Something like... S T A I R C A S E.

Man, that song was awesome... still waiting for studio treatment D=

  • Raul Midon "Adam N Eve N Eve". Optimistic's main harmony on the chorus...

  • nice. This is where i heard that clip from frank ocean's mixtape.

  • This is my favourite radiohead track

  • yes, imagine some pussy.

  • Colliermoose I agree with you but no one beat the beatles!

  • Radiohead is pretentious

  • @thefallennikaya

    your mom is pretentious

  • @thefallennikaya pretentious as in "we dare to play different stuff in every record and yet we've been always good (RADIOHEAD)" or "Me and my staff can create a great show for every song in my concerts and we dictate what'll be cool for the next months (MADDONA)"... or as in "i'm in a great band that plays variations of our early 2000's very few real hits (COLD PLAY)", or as in "i was born this way, like me because i speak for you! (LADY GAGA)". I prefer the the first two types.

  • @albertoalejandro0424 Word up. Though I would add that Madonna only dictates what'll be cool for gay old people who only have a month or two to live anyway.

  • @Elcore You may not be a Maddona fan (I'm actually not), but I'm old enough to remember how Maddona influenced a lot of artists and singers... while most of the rest has been using the styles she created for specific songs, records, and times (that's what I meant by "dictate what'll be cool)".

  • @Elcore Oh snap! You didn't go there!

  • @albertoalejandro0424

The last three suck, only the first one is important at all.

  • @albertoalejandro0424 I prefer all of them

  • @Carpettower Yeah well, not saying no one should listen to them, but let's just keep the big leaguers separated from the rest of them. Besides, it's a good idea to have easy-to-listen stuff while you're drunk or worse, that's why there's a place for all kinds of music -the only thing I hate is when an "artist" with no REAL talent is treated like top shit.

  • @albertoalejandro0424 Yeah I get you. But I think Gaga has talent and Coldplay used to be fantastic in the "A Rush of Blood to the Head" days

  • @thefallennikaya

    Can you prove it?

  • @thefallennikaya

No, they're not. Many of their fans, however, are very pretentious. That's the reason I held off on giving Radiohead's music the chance, for a long time. Once you give it a real listen, you realize it's just plain art. And, they don't care what you and I think, nor should they. It's about texture-changes, subtle musical complexity. Worthy of respect.

  • A pessimistic is a optimistic who got experience

  • @TheAskald *pessimist.

  • sounds similar to Victoria by The Kinks and The Fall.

  • Well, Radiohead are definitely the best band of the last 3 generations.

  • .... radiohead

  • nigga try to brush the cat

  • @zathorg haha i literally LMAO

  • @littledudemark5 np, if you need a download link, I'll point you to one

  • @littledudemark5 Adblock Plus. Or buy/download the album.

  • @Colliermoose I hate people that insist that ALL modern artists are not as talented as their predecessors. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Radiohead, Floyd, and Zeppelin. After listening to a lot of Alt Rock and Classical, I also started to listen to Metal (NO I am NOT a Conformist, don't stereotype me, not starting an argument). Just listen to artists like Porcupine Tree, Agalloch, Dream Theater, and Alcest, and tell me that these guys have no talent. I DARE you.

  • @MetalRagnaroc

Do what makes you happy, listen to what you want, and don't worry about people calling you a conformist, as they are obviously conforming to something. Just be human! :D

  • @Colliermoose dude, get over yourself. when you're 40 or 50 with shitty kids, an annoying wife, and a crap job, then you'll wish like hell u were still a shocked and misunderstood 18-year-old virgin.

  • @sfbayareagirl Wow. You're a real downer you know that? Lighten up man.

  • @Stiny114 lol. wait and see. And I'm no downer at all. I'm fun and cool. Just know what's up, that's all. biotch. ; )

  • @sfbayareagirl Just trying to help.

  • @sfbayareagirl Fair enough :) I can't believe people are still frequently replying to a comment I left 7 months ago. I almost can't remember what I typed lol. It's been so long that I'm actually now a 19-YEAR-OLD virgin (and proud of it).

  • @Colliermoose You're 19, and a virgin? No worries, I didn't technically lose mine until I was 19 and I'm married to the same woman (5 Years now, and damn good looking). Sex is over-rated, everyone will get plenty of it at some point in their life.

  • Comment removed

  • @sfbayareagirl

    Agreed.

  • you guys need to stop talking bullshit

  • 4:21.

  • the outro is in limbo

  • Today I failed an important exam and my stay at college is at risk, but I'll just keep on trying the best I can... With every single day that goes I just realize even more that Kid A is the soundtrack of my actual life.

  • dude you live in your mind too much. be out here in the world.

  • all i can think of with this song is animal farm; i imagine the pigs that have taken over telling all the others: WORK ON, STAY POSITIVE! WE WILL ONE DAY MAKE THIS FARM BETTER THEN IT EVER WAS... its chilling thinking of all that positivity gone to waste... being pessimistic every once in a while is fine; too must positivity could lead you to a false or improbable goal...

  • R.I.P. Elvis Presley

  • R.I.P Ayrton Senna

  • You can try the best you can - the best you can is good enough.

  • 2 people are pessimistic.

  • @turnipdaisy

Better to be pessimistic than naiive.

  • @TheCagedTiger

That doesn't make sense, optimism doesn't make you any more naive than being pessimistic. That logic is about as fallacious as it gets.

  • @turnipdaisy Optimism in a society where it it always turns out to be the pessimistic view is naive Although the validity of that prevalent factor is debatable.

  • @Nikotehwolf Of course it's debatable, because it's just not true.Society & life in general does not (& I quote you) "ALWAYS" turn out to be pessimistic. Our quality of life has been ameliorated to the point that we can sit at our computers in our air condition houses debating shit like this (once again)ON A GOD DAMN COMPUTER not even face to face.I don't know what the people who say that are seeing, but take a trip back a few centuries & they'll know what a "Pessimistic" world looks like.

  • @turnipdaisy Hurr, "its just not true" apparently. Realize people of those times who lived in fantasy worlds died, there were no delusions, generally speaking.I never said it was a good time period in the past, try using argument that are applicable to this discourse. Now also realize that your life is not the only life that should matter to you, not matter how nice it is there are still people in relatively horrible conditions to yours so to sit back and honestly claim that no one is suffering-

  • @turnipdaisy and that you should see the brighter side of life. Realize again, there is nothing wrong with that, but getting back to my statement of always, that was obviously hyperbole used to illustrate the severity of the statement. People are liars, cheats, deep down the great majority of us are selfish and do everything simply for their own pitiful life. Optimism is selfish, it prevents the individual from realizing the entirety of the truth to protect their fragile emotions. Now to-

  • @turnipdaisy -my next point of the relativity of views. Actions of the past that were negative were commonplace therefore they did not have as much as an impact were they to happen today. What is negative and positive is not set in stone, its relative. Its better and worse, not good and bad. So to say that life is good is erroneous to begin with even ignoring all my other points. There will always be good and bad in life, people like you only try to see the "good" and ignore the "bad". The whole

  • @turnipdaisy -point of this is that most optimists fail to see the entirety of reality, their optimism is too great, it needs to be because of all the things people find to be negative that inhabit our world. Although good and evil, right and wrong, positive and negative are all subjective terms so something evil to me could be good to you although most people ascribe themselves to the paradigm of the day in order to save themselves from individual identity and thought and the isolation with it.

  • @turnipdaisy tl;dr, quit only seeing one side of reality and learn to experience as it is as a whole.

  • @Nikotehwolf I'm not seeing one side to a reality,I see reality getting better, relativistic views are irrelevant to whats actually going on.The world is getting better 3 post of convoluted typing won't change that.Just because a selfish prick won't donate to the children's fund doesn't mean that more kids are not eating than they were in the past.& by sheer magnitude it's better. You can take that relativistic rhetoric to a sociology or philosophy class where people will take it seriously.

  • @turnipdaisy There will always be a negative side to reality that is the struggle that drives us if you ignore it then all life becomes is surviving and experiencing life like a simplistic animal, you need to idealize an idea and strive for it not simply accept your reality as great, reality can never be perfect but if you do your part in trying to promote what you feel important is much better than someone doing nothing and calling themselves optimistic and calling the world okay in ignorance.

  • @turnipdaisy You have to always improve, regardless of what you believe relativism is actually quite important to how things are working as a whole. What you are describing is a positive relative flux anyway so you prove my point in what you are saying, just because it is getting better it doesn't mean you should accept it as good enough. You should always realize the problems in society or our world as a whole and try to change them for the betterment of the world as a whole.

  • @turnipdaisy We strive to improve infinity, not stop at a point.

  • Comment removed

  • @Nikotehwolf Last post,.1.I don't prove anything you have said if it's in tune with your "negative" idioms. 2.Relativism falls flat ,not because It doesn't reach a point, but simply because it ignores ANY point when used by simpletons.3.I shouldn't do anything,But I try my best to do what I can to ameliorate the world anyway.4.There will always be a positive side learn to focus on the good & attenuate the negative &.Not ignore it.Strive to be optimistic not Mentally nadir .

  • @turnipdaisy Your points are a lack of points, just baseless insults on my argument and me. Sorry you are a pretensions moron.

  • @turnipdaisy also lol nice job getting off of the argument just to insult me, shows me how intelligent you really are bro

  • + what kind of faggot uses the term nadir to describe someone's intelligence, seriously are you above using more colloquial terms or do you want me to be deceived by your veil of sophistication and intelligence?

  • @turnipdaisy hurrr buddy

  • @turnipdaisy Also to end my statements, you are a useless faggot who likes to appease themselves on the fact that they think that everything is fine and that they are more intelligent than everyone without any reason to believe that, seriously your life is worthless and you are a pointless vermin to the human race.

  • @Nikotehwolf

Lol, wow, a barrage of post & personal insults all because I didn't agree.I'll keep in mind that my points,do indeed lack........Points????Sorry for undertaking the belief that the world isn't going to shit,I'll be more nadir about life ;D...

  • Mr. GianTheMan is a troll. He's posted basically the same comment on all of these videos. Don't feed him.

  • queens of the stone age and kyuss are great, and so is radiohead. stop arguing

  • I am masterfully surfing in a sea of sand. Tackling the windblown dunes and the wind shifts me about in the light-felt air. I am, happily, enjoying life on a small particle sand, trapped in between the two ends of a massive hourglass. Still, I brave the uplifting sun dimming through the thick layer of glass in the far beyond, and I dance with the scorpions in the night. My idea of optimistic...

  • the songs melodys go very well with the album cover, very broad and echoy. my personal favorite from radio head.

  • i bloody love this album's artwork. all the albums, in fact.

  • @GianTheMan91 What do you have against radiohead, just wondering because on all of these videos you seem to have to a hate comment.

  • Is there a song for the bloody outro? It's beautiful!

  • "living on animal farm". Is that in referance to the book by george orwell?

  • @brickhouses9 Very few people know this but that's true!

  • @brickhouses9 No, 'living on animal farm' is actually a reference to Macbeth.

  • our imaginations are very different, which makes everyone who they are........

I can't explain what I imagine, except that it makes me move and it's dreamy to me - I imagine that it is part of my inner repertoire.

  • best song on KId A by far

  • I imagine...

  • awesome song! im glad they put this song in the KID A album.

  • i imagine a vagina

  • Radiohead is the only recent band comparable to early classics which (well I guess you could say) invented REAL music, such as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. I'd dare say that Radiohead is better than all three, partly because I am an 18 year old male who can relate to their music, largely because I feel alienated, confused and lost in this strange strange world that doesn't make any sense to me anymore. And as for their Kid A album, well, frankly, there's nothing else quite like it.

  • @Colliermoose Well put.

  • @Colliermoose @Colliermoose led zep ok. but pink floyd are fucking shite and have already done wierd experimental music so radiohead have not innovated at all they just done a pink floyd on us ie ran out of ideas for decent songs. one decent song per album aint good enough imo. QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE.KYUSS

  • @GianTheMan91 are you like 12 years old??? or just a babling retard, because 0 percent of what you said is comprehensible. you must be the loneliest human being on earth getting all bent out of shape over youtube comments

  • @GianTheMan91 Radiohead makes good music. I respect Pink Floyd very much, as much as I could respect Radiohead, but if the world made music just like the Queen of the Stone Age and "Kiss" (Is that what you said?.. lol) then the world would eventually be flavorless. I like flavor, and I also enjoy a distinct difference in my bands, which is evident in relationship between Pink Floyd and Radiohead.

  • @NIN99Koala you deserve a slap for thinking i meant kiss. i meant kyuss. look up freedom run

  • @Colliermoose th eonly person radiohead would appeal to is a confused 18 year old. never compare them to good bands that accomplish things again.

  • @Sage80 I guess the esteemed critics of the world are all confused 18 year olds huh?

  • @Sage80 ur fuckin gay. why r u even on this song

  • @Colliermoose if only musical greatness were measured by relatability to confused & alienated 18 year olds.

  • @Sage80 +1 fuck.

  • @Colliermoose listen to the band This Heat. they're like Radiohead except with the pop-rock crap removed. also they're a 70s/80s band. they even made the first ever drum and bass track ("24 Track Loop")

  • @mekanikCircadia or just listen to The Band

  • @Colliermoose i admire your taste in classics but as all things in this world, people like zeppelin, the beatles and floyd, all had there own influences. they didnt pull a new music style right out of nothing.. now if you truly want to talk about the fathers of "real" music you should before them into the jass styles that brought forth blues, which brought the rock that most people refer to as the "classics"

  • @Colliermoose No no no, I love Radiohead and I love all the bands you previously mentioned, but my biggest pet peeve is when people in some way or another imply that modern day bands can't compare with classic bands such at the Beatles, Zeppelin and Floyd. While Radiohead may be the best band of the decade, there are tons of bands that are almost as good. Arcade fire for example. Not trying to start an argument, just saying

  • @amberlover678 Agreed. Plus I see that Radiohead argument all over the place. I do think RH is innovative and certainly very different, but now that it's 2011, there's so much stuff out there. Just because it's a new year, doesn't mean anything new can't be just as, if not MORE, powerful. Plus, like art, music is subjective. If they're gonna go comparing RH to Pink Floyd, then they'll have to compare Pink Floyd to Mozart, and so on.

  • @Squidpus Couldn't have put it better myself

  • @Colliermoose Don't fret little one your not alone. This album changed my life.

  • @Colliermoose The Beatles definitely invented REAL music. Fuck that Bach and Schubert shit.

  • @mightywarriorx You are an idiot. I'm sorry, but it's infinitely more challenging to compose and perform classical music than anything the Beatles or any rockers have done.

While you don't have to like classical music, you have to respect the amount of talent those musicians and composers have. As a woodwind player, I picked up a bass guitar and learned a lot of Radiohead, Beatles, and Prog Rock songs in a couple of months, without help. It's easy in comparison. Love 'em, but you're wrong.

  • @MasterYumyums You're the idiot who couldn't catch my sarcasm.

  • @mightywarriorx Because sarcasm translates so well over text.

But sorry about that. My bad.

  • @MasterYumyums Hah, no problem.

  • @Colliermoose you are a fucking POSER

  • @Colliermoose Mate, there's a lot of water to run through Danube before Radiohead tops Floyd, Zeppelin and The Beatles. They probably are the best band of the last three generations. But the influence the 3 bands you mentioned can't be measured. Sure, Thom & Co. are big influence to a lot of bands, but you cannot put aside the amount of art created by Beatles and Floyd. They're on their way don't worry, and for Bob's sake do not overrate them, that's a worst thing to do to a such marvelous band.

  • @LastFreeManStanding You seem to be talking more about size than real quality. The Beatles did little that was musically exceptional.

  • @lukeskymac Later records mostly......And as for the earlier ones, with just a few chords and simple progressions to create something of that strength - exceptional. Radiohead are the same mastodons as the mentioned bands, but wait a bit till declaring that.

  • @lukeskymac Were you dropped on your head child? That is the most ridiculous statement I have ever heard in life.

  • @pixiesticks007 So I'm retarded because I dislike the Beatles? I think I'm not the one making ridiculous statements here.

  • @lukeskymac yes you are

  • @LastFreeManStanding dude you totaly schooled that guy!

  • @Colliermoose i don't think you know how much i can relate with you. this is unreal.

  • @Colliermoose ... but... Beatles? Really?

  • This song used to give me the creeps

  • first time listenin - yes i've missed out - i recognise this but i'm sure I've never heard it before...

  • Nervous messed up marionette

Floating around on a prison shiiiip....

  • @nzwwefan

You're right. I have been trying to find this stanza for quite some time. Many thanks.

    StL, MO, USA

  • this song is what kept my mom in college.

she had just finished an exam in a class, and she was almost certain she bombed it. driving back home, she turned on the radio, and what would be playing but this song, right at the chorus, too.

  • @MinkyBoodle44 what kind of radio was that lol.. if it wasnt XM or Sirius.. idk what kind of radio station would play radiohead other than creep.

  • @2323jgrant it's a local-ish radio station called wpgu 107.1

    they only play alternative

  • @MinkyBoodle44 yea, parkland college is a sonuvabich when it comes exam time

  • im confused, is that last section, like, the last 10 seconds or so, part of the song or no?

  • @tazaabha yes, it is!

  • favorite song from kid a

  • This would ssooo be my badass background. It is just amazing and it makes me wish I wrote it.

  • the best thing about Kid A albumn is how original it is. not just obvious chords and melodies, but kind of wierd stuff too. i really like it.

  • this and in limbo played right after this is heaven to my ears.

  • @tyreesemj1 Optimistic - In Limbo - Idioteque - Morning Bell = best transitions ever.

  • oops. second to last paragraph. haha my bad :P

  • I think the lyrics in the second paragraph are "And now this messed up marionette, floating around on a prison ship". I dunno if anyone else caught that, but in most of the other lyrics ive seen it says marionette. I just thought i'd let ya know (:

  • The outro's so fun to play on bass >.<

    GO COLIN

MOST UNDERRATED BASSIST OF ALL TIME

  • Kid A was so ahead of its time, that it's hard to believe it was released 10 years ago today.

  • HAPPY 10TH BIRTHDAY, KID A!

  • first time listening to this album... like it...

  • What I learned from this song:

If you try to best you can, dinosaurs will rule the earth.
