Being familiar with Radiohead's other discography, I expected this to be a tongue-in-cheek song about who remains optimistic with a woman that clearly hates him, or a sarcastic song by a pessimist and his reaction towards the world. I was incredibly surprised, especially "You can try the best you can, you can try the best you can, the best you can is good enough." This is one of my favorite Radiohead songs and one of the most powerful IMO.

I think this is the best song in Kid A. Good album and all, but the band's guitar work was always its greatest strength and this song is where they remember that.
The King of Limbs was nice, but requires some SERIOUSLY GOOD headphones to fully enjoy some of its best tracks (aka Bloom).
I am hoping their next album keeps some of that style but makes it less of a precision affair, some that flows better. Something like... S T A I R C A S E.

No, they're not. Many of their fans, however, are very pretentious. That's the reason I held off on giving Radiohead's music the chance, for a long time. Once you give it a real listen, you realize it's just plain art. And, they don't care what you and I think, nor should they. It's about texture-changes, subtle musical complexity. Worthy of respect.
@Colliermoose I hate people that insist that ALL modern artists are not as talented as their predecessors. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Radiohead, Floyd, and Zeppelin. After listening to a lot of Alt Rock and Classical, I also started to listen to Metal (NO I am NOT a Conformist, don't stereotype me, not starting an argument). Just listen to artists like Porcupine Tree, Agalloch, Dream Theater, and Alcest, and tell me that these guys have no talent. I DARE you.

Radiohead is the only recent band comparable to early classics which (well I guess you could say) invented REAL music, such as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. I'd dare say that Radiohead is better than all three, partly because I am an 18 year old male who can relate to their music, largely because I feel alienated, confused and lost in this strange strange world that doesn't make any sense to me anymore. And as for their Kid A album, well, frankly, there's nothing else quite like it.

I respect Pink Floyd very much, as much as I could respect Radiohead, but if the world made music just like the Queen of the Stone Age and "Kiss" (Is that what you said?.. lol) then the world would eventually be flavorless. @Colliermoose Mate, there's a lot of water to run through Danube before Radiohead tops Floyd, Zeppelin and The Beatles. They probably are the best band of the last three generations. But the influence the 3 bands you mentioned can't be measured. Sure, Thom & Co. are big influence to a lot of bands, but you cannot put aside the amount of art created by Beatles and Floyd. They're on their way don't worry, and for Bob's sake do not overrate them, that's a worst thing to do to a such marvelous band.

@turnipdaisy -point of this is that most optimists fail to see the entirety of reality, their optimism is too great, it needs to be because of all the things people find to be negative that inhabit our world. Although good and evil, right and wrong, positive and negative are all subjective terms so something evil to me could be good to you although most people ascribe themselves to the paradigm of the day in order to save themselves from individual identity and thought and the isolation with it.

@turnipdaisy There will always be a negative side to reality that is the struggle that drives us if you ignore it then all life becomes is surviving and experiencing life like a simplistic animal, you need to idealize an idea and strive for it not simply accept your reality as great, reality can never be perfect but if you do your part in trying to promote what you feel important is much better than someone doing nothing and calling themselves optimistic and calling the world okay in ignorance.

What you are describing is a positive relative flux anyway so you prove my point in what you are saying, just because it is getting better it doesn't mean you should accept it as good enough. You should always realize the problems in society or our world as a whole and try to change them for the betterment of the world as a whole.

Radiohead is the only recent band comparable to early classics which (well I guess you could say) invented REAL music, such as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. I'd dare say that Radiohead is better than all three, partly because I am an 18 year old male who can relate to their music, largely because I feel alienated, confused and lost in this strange strange world that doesn't make any sense to me anymore. And as for their Kid A album, well, frankly, there's nothing else quite like it.

I respect Pink Floyd very much, as much as I could respect Radiohead, but if the world made music just like the Queen of the Stone Age and "Kiss" (Is that what you said?.. lol) then the world would eventually be flavorless. I like flavor, and I also enjoy a distinct difference in my bands, which is evident in relationship between Pink Floyd and Radiohead.

@Colliermoose i admire your taste in classics but as all things in this world, people like zeppelin, the beatles and floyd, all had there own influences. they didnt pull a new music style right out of nothing.. now if you truly want to talk about the fathers of "real" music you should before them into the jass styles that brought forth blues, which brought the rock that most people refer to as the "classics"

@amberlover678 Agreed. Plus I see that Radiohead argument all over the place. I do think RH is innovative and certainly very different, but now that it's 2011, there's so much stuff out there. Just because it's a new year, doesn't mean anything new can't be just as, if not MORE, powerful. Plus, like art, music is subjective. If they're gonna go comparing RH to Pink Floyd, then they'll have to compare Pink Floyd to Mozart, and so on.

@mightywarriorx You are an idiot. I'm sorry, but it's infinitely more challenging to compose and perform classical music than anything the Beatles or any rockers have done.
While you don't have to like classical music, you have to respect the amount of talent those musicians and composers have. As a woodwind player, I picked up a bass guitar and learned a lot of Radiohead, Beatles, and Prog Rock songs in a couple of months, without help. It's easy in comparison. Love 'em, but you're wrong.

@Colliermoose Mate, there's a lot of water to run through Danube before Radiohead tops Floyd, Zeppelin and The Beatles. They probably are the best band of the last three generations. But the influence the 3 bands you mentioned can't be measured. Sure, Thom & Co. are big influence to a lot of bands, but you cannot put aside the amount of art created by Beatles and Floyd. They're on their way don't worry, and for Bob's sake do not overrate them, that's a worst thing to do to a such marvelous band.
