Ethan was played so well Mapother. You have got to admire the casting for the characters in lost... they are picked so well. Ethan has a creepy, eerie side to him, but like some of you have said, you see the good side to him in other episodes.

Lost has a lot of rivalries between people who are exactly the same: Jack/Ethan (doctors), Locke/Eko (spiritualists), Kate/Sawyer (criminals), Sayid/Keamy (soldiers), need I go on?

Something I've noticed is that Locke has a habit of intruding in other people business: Jack's leadership, Ben's leadership, Charlie's paternal relationship with Aaron, Desmond's work in the hatch, Eko's work in the hatch, the freighter situation.

I'm not trying to knock on Locke, he's my favorite character, just something I noticed.

This is bittersweet. Ethan is sort of a bittersweet character. He is first shown to be a homicidal conspirator before he's killed. Then in flashbacks there is this idealistic good guy feeling to him.

This scene gave more depth to his motives and character.

William Mapother is a good actor, Tom Cruise's cousin.

Agreed. This one scene provides all the context needed to understand Ethan. He lost his wife and child due to the island situation that causes pregnant women to die. So his dogmatic interest in Claire, and his taking matters into his own hands, makes sense.

@lookingglassedge - Yeah but, most of Ethan's niceness is a facade. When he's helping out Claire during her pregnancy, he had her drugged, and almost succeeds in conning her her baby. He assists Ben Linus in kidnapping Alex Rousseau. He impersonates the Losties and then brutally murders one, nearly killing another (Charlie) and abducting a third (Claire.)

But you're right, he's a good actor, they all are, apart from young Eloise and Seamus in Series 5 and 6.

I noticed the hair too. Also, inn the season finale, jack looked much older and had similar hair in his flashback, he should have looked younger than when he first crashed. Unfortunately this is just Matthew Fox aging, and not wanting to shave his head for flashbacks/missing pieces

with time travel, i have this theory that, because ben obviously didn't want widmore to find the island, he had them push the button in the hatch to prevent the island moving forward in time. so, if you think about it, instead of the island moving forward in time, it would somehow reset every 108 minutes and prevent widmore from finding the island in the future, because it didn't exist there. so they weren't charging down the magnet, rather sending themselves back in time. your thoughts?
