Danke!!
It's about people losing it from obstinate selfishness. There's a lot of work for the artist to show the humanity (usually under siege from his own guns) of such a character. This Macbeth is good art and great music, not wooden whinging.
Bruson... in my mind has the greatest of Baritone voices. The breathing, musculature and technique is simple miraculous. I wonder how many decibels he could unleash in full vocal flight.
Bruson was a fine artist. His voice had sufficient weight and color for Verdi (although MacNeil and Milnes had better high notes and generally greater facility up there), and he was a good actor. He conveys Macbeth's resolve AND the pain that threatens to burst through it --
I think he sounds great. A live performance is always touch and go depending on the condition of the performer that day. Recordings cannot be compared to them. And singing is hard physical work -plus lighting, costumes, makeup,-sometimes one does work up a sweat...completely normal.
Were any of you guys around in the 80`s in Vienna? Bruson was fabulous in Attila with Capuccilli, each one was better than the other. This was also one of his roles, young Dvorsky was MacDuff.
I actually like watching both versions. His voice is better in 1977, but this clip here has much better image and it's great to see his wonderful acting/singing and the depth he gives to this character. He is one of the most convincing Macbeths I have seen.
@lmspr simply sublime. With deep gratitude to the divine gift of music, Verdi, this wonderful baritone, the conductor, the orchestra and everyone who has made this possible.
Bruson is a great Verdi baritone. I saw Olivia Stapp as Lady Macbeth in Washington DC, (sometime in the early 80s), and she was awesome. Strong vocally and an impressive stage image.
Excellent!!! The ultimate baritone indeed. Bruson is still performing every now and then. His voice is, of course, much weakened now, but this is one of the best baritones of the last century, without a question. The delivery of angest beneath the superficial strength is masterful indeed, at once bone-chilling and beautiful.
Wonderfull!

Love this aria... wish I were a guy with a deep baritone voice for just a day, so I could sing this.

This is really good, but for an even better version by Bruson himself type "Bruson Torino 1977". His voice was even more velvety then.
